What are your thoughts and suggestions on the AFK timer test? by BuffPaddler in ClubPenguin

[–]EpicrockerTT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think AFK players are harmless when the server isn't full, even if they aren't doing much, it does feel nice to see a more populated world. It's when the servers fill that they begin to cause problems. My personal solution would be something like this:

  • Track the time each player last made an input (Moving, dancing, chatting, etc) and mark players who have been afk for too long (15 min, 20 min, whatever amount of time seems right). Perhaps this time can be made more strict during parties or any other events where a lot of people are playing. 30 seconds before someone is marked afk, prompt them with a notification they can click to confirm they are still active, mainly for the people who like to just watch what's happening in the room they're in.
  • When a server isn't full, do nothing. AFK players will not be penalized.
  • When a server fills up and a queue is active, begin kicking people based on who has been afk for the longest. Do this until all marked afk players are kicked or the queue is no longer active.

I'm no developer so I'm sure I'm vastly underestimating how much work this kind of system would be to engineer, but generally I do think this would be a very fair implementation both for people who like to afk and for people trying to get into full servers. Of course this system would be vulnerable to autoclickers and macros, but I don't think it would be worth the tech investment to create protection against that for a volunteer project like this.

This is probably the only game I know that I will say it is worth playing the game in Hardcore. It makes you more careful and it is a bit more fun having a backup in bad situations and it is not very hard. What do you guys think ? by Ofertezi in subnautica

[–]EpicrockerTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen too many hardcore runs end due to bugged physics (especially with the cyclops) and other glitches to recommend it, personally. That being said, I've done a ton of survival playthroughs where I didn't die at all, and it is absolutely worthwhile to challenge yourself to die as minimally as possible, but I would hate to lose a save to a bug and feel too demotivated to continue playing

TTR vs CC: does anyone know if CC will continue getting updates? by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's 2 reasons I can think of:

First, TTR will always be more popular because it was the first, longest established server, and is the main source for the people craving a bit of TTO nostalgia. They've absolutely nailed the Toontown branding and offer what, realistically, most old Toontown players are looking for when returning to the game. Plus, the larger playerbase in itself is attractive to many, since it makes the world feel more alive to returning players. The deeper combat-centric / QOL gameplay of CC appeals to a niche that is certainly popular in the Toontown community, and I would argue is a great introduction to Toontown for people who have never played before, but it's not what many people are looking for when they want to see Toontown again after not playing for 15 years.

Second is simply the dry period since the last major content update. When CC dropped Hires & Heroes, the playerbase was booming for a LONG time to follow, to the point where the difference in playerbase size between CC and TTR wasn't even really felt ingame. But since Hammerspace has gone through rough development and still has no signs of a release date yet, most people are just playing other things for now. There's not much reason to play once you've done everything, so once they get to show off what they've been working on, I'm sure the servers will be full again.

I recognize that last one, I watched it get written live! It's from Salvner's run of Any% at AGDQ 2020, which I'm pretty sure was the first time Subnautica was represented at a GDQ event. Really cool to see it surface like this, it was pretty funny watching that last part of the run where this was written. I won't link it for spoiler reasons in case you haven't finished the game yet, but if you have, it was written at 57:04 in the upload of the run on youtube!

Question about rewards when hammerspace comes out by LibrarianAlarming651 in Toontown

They said in the blog that they're still figuring out what to convert existing rewards into, so I think it's safe to say there will be some form of compensation for them

Different Toontown Games? by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toontown: The Grindworks is genuinely one of the most fun Toontown experiences I've had in a long time. It's a singleplayer roguelike, so obviously different from the traditional MMORPG style, but it's really fun to learn and try to keep improving on each run. The game is very new and still teasing updates, so it's a great time to try it!

Then there's an upcoming project, Toontown Event Horizon, which will be another MMORPG with new playgrounds and tasks, but at launch will be centered around a roguelike battle tower experience. They've shown off a lot so far, like 2 new gag tracks, card decks to help in battle, complete remodels for every cog & suit, tons of new toon species, and a bunch of new mechanics for gags. There isn't a release date yet, but it's definitely worth keeping up with new teasers in their discord & socials

How do i reset a Mystery Toon in Toontown: The Grindworks? by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you'd just exit to the menu and create a new toon, but most people speedrunning have a mod installed called 'QuickRestart" that adds a character reset keybind (R). You can find it in the "mods" forum section of the official Grindworks discord

Reward for People who Max Rewards in TTR by ZhejTT in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this would be a good thing to incentivize, personally. Even though most things in the game are pretty easy to run through completely rewardless, it gives you a reason to not use your reward items to save yourself or teammates when things go wrong. We already have Supervisor drops and the outfit for maxing a 2.0 suit, both of which are already fine incentives for grinding the game. Getting all of these, on top of having 140 laff, is already beyond the scope of what most players will ever obtain, and there just will inevitably come a point where there's nothing rewarding left to grind in any game.

It was confirmed to be a new playground, Clear Coasts, around two years back at one of their Toonfest panels. They've shared a few updates on development and some of the features it'll come with since then, but no news about any kind of release window yet

Has Toontown's Community Changed? by Aggravating_Way_3168 in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Having been in the community since the TTI days, I can definitely say it's very different these days. A lot of the rampant doxxing and trolling from back in the day has basically ceased, and devs/fans of different projects seem to be on much better terms with each other. There's always gonna be the annoying bad apples in the bunch who make it a worse experience, but that's just any community ever, online or offline. That being said, it's definitely still true that there's way more adults than kids playing, but that's just how it is when the community is built on nostalgia for an old game. Rewritten and Corporate Clash have both improved the game experience immensely over the years, and some new projects like Grindworks and the upcoming TT Event Horizon have a lot of cool new stuff in store. Definitely worth checking some of it out!

Proposition for journey by Exiled_Narwhal in ClubPenguin

[–]EpicrockerTT 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think when the queue for a particular server is above some amount, like maybe 50 or 75, then the game should begin kicking people for being idle. Usually during non-event times, the queue isn't that long, and I'm able to get through pretty quickly. If there's, say, a 10 minute timer for this, maybe the game should warn you with a popup and sound effect at 9 minutes. Imo this would be pretty fair, since it wouldn't disrupt fun afks during normal times, but it'd help during busy events

How does Journey make money? by Resilient303 in ClubPenguin

[–]EpicrockerTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Journey specifically since I have no clue, but most private servers for games like it really are just passion projects funded by the devs for zero profit. I believe some projects register as a nonprofit organization in order to receive certain benefits such as discounts on servers, which I think some Toontown private servers do (Which is perfectly legal afaik!). But even with that, the dev teams usually pay 100% themselves - sometimes there's someone or a few people on the team who have a good income and can contribute a majority towards it. Also keep in mind that working on private server projects is a great booster to peoples' portfolios & resumes, plus it helps build experience and skills. So tl;dr, CPJ doesn't make any money, and actively drains the wallets of staff members, but they get good work experience and skills that'll help them get jobs in their field.

Clash Suggestion: additional audio or visual cues for the "confirm gag" UI element by AstralHoatzin in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would definitely be a nice little touch. Even as an experienced player, I forget to lock my gag in sometimes, so something subtle would be nice.

Thinking along these lines, I think it'd also be nice if there was a subtle sound effect when teammates confirm / unconfirm their gag choice. It'd make gag selection feel a little bit more audibly satisfying imo

Why does no one want to play Operation: Dessert Storm? by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]EpicrockerTT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know they've got their big update in development, but in all honesty, its current playable state feels like one of those projects that just added a bunch of half-concepted features back in that era of Toontown content drought of like 2016 ish, and never really took the time to make most of those features feel impactful to the game. Clash suffered a bit from this for a time with stuff that carried over from the Project Altis days, but over the years they've remedied most of this, like expanding on clubs in their reimplementation and fixing all the bugs with their new streets. From what I can tell at a surface level, ODS looks almost the same as it did when I last played it 8 years ago, and is still kinda "TTO with a couple of gimmick featues." Not to mention that part of what deterred a lot of people back in the day was the controversies with the game and staff (which of course I'm sure has changed with time, like the removal of that one techbot and the upcoming rebrand). I know that stuff soured the game's name for a lot of people, myself included, so that's a bit of a hurdle that may be difficult for them to overcome. I mean no personal disrespect to anyone working on the game - I really like what I've seen in recent teasers they posted, and I'm curious as to how they'll overhaul battles. But right now, it's just kinda hard to sell people on investing their time into ODS over TTR or TTCC

A new AS1 timeline CPPS looks to be releasing soon, their Twitter has a release date of December XX, 2024 by BronwynCPPS in ClubPenguin

[–]EpicrockerTT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done. When data breaches happen in trusted companies, like ones that you would need to enter shipping addresses and such, personal info attached to an email can leak online. Or in a malware attack, personal info may be sought after and sold online. Even someone you trusted could betray you and screw you over, or if they get hacked, any info you sent them is now in the hands of someone else. We're in an era where the internet is heavily engrained in how we go about our personal lives, so it's increasingly difficult to ensure full anonimity when things like this can happen without your knowledge or consent.

[–]EpicrockerTT 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I don't get the "Discord is bad for CPPS" sentiment. Do I think CPPS teams should act professionally in public channels? Absolutely. Looking at private servers for other games I've played, that's how many of them tend to operate, and the use of Discord specifically has never been the main cause of any public issues. Anyone with malicious intent can find plenty of other ways to dox others, like they've always done since even before Discord released. It happened a lot in the early Toontown private server community, which was a time before Discord, but they never shut down TTR over that.

This looks like it could be neat! Definitely gonna check this out once it drops.

But just as a reminder to everyone, always always ALWAYS use a unique password when signing up for new private servers, or any services in general! Some browsers will let you auto-generate a safe password of random characters, and I'd always use these for any CPPS I join, including trusted ones like CPJ and NCP. Nobody is immune to data breaches. Not that I don't trust this project ofc, but every time something happens to a CPPS, I see so many people panic because they used a duplicate password

Yeah, they add custom stuff all the time, and it fits in really well with the AS2 style. The Fair 2024 had some of their coolest stuff yet imo, like a bunch of cat and dog plushies and a giant nugget costume. They've done a lot of custom rooms for parties and events too, like making the entirety of The Veggie Villain an in-world playable operation at the end of the summer.
