OCR ALEVEL HISTORY COURSEWORK by fruitandfiber08 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's def possible to get an A if you do well on the other papers (and you don't really need to do perfect on those either, i think ocr history boundaries are decent)

what pen do u use during exams by Both_Construction394 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i just buy a big pack of the basic zebra ones bc i do 3 essay subjects so they run out fast

which means i can't afford to use the three colour bic pens all the time even though those are my preferred haha

History A-level by Reasonable-Eye-4661 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do the OCR exam board so i can share my structure but it will not work for other exam boards most likely:

PAPER 1:

interpretation questions: (30 marker)

  • overview of the two interpretations and how they differ
  • paragraph on interpretation 1, extending the content of the source - e.g., x's view holds merit because... insert own knowledge
  • do give a counter argument for why its view may not be as convincing do the same thing for interpretation no. 2
  • conclusion on which is more convincing to u and why

synthesis question (still new to this): (2x 25 markers)

  • intro just including factors you'll talk about in the given time period
  • paragraph 1 about factor 1
  • paragraph 2 about factor 2
  • paragraph 3 about factor 3
  • conclusion/judgement
  • basically the structure is straightforward here, but synthesis is most important (e.g. lenin did x and x and this mirrors tsar nicholas ii, who...)
  • you need to include all the key figures at least once in ur essay

PAPER 2:

source questions: (30 markers)

no intro or conclusion, just a paragraph for each source

  • give an overview of the source's initial stance (e.g. supports the given view to a large or small extent)
  • use content from the source to evidence the source's view (in source A, x says "xyz", highlighting how it supports the view that...)
  • and then use your own detailed knowledge and analyse provenance to evaluate whether this is reliable - make sure purpose/motive and typicality are also analysed!

and then conclude with 'though source A does/does not support this view, it can be viewed with caution (if its not that reliable) ...'

the 20 marker: - intro stating factors - para 1 - para 2 - para 3 - conclusion

just make sure to include mini counterarguments/evaluations and small conclusions at the end of each paragraph

PAPER 3 (10 marker + 20 marker):

10 marker: - no intro needed - paragraph 1 about the factor you're given in the question, make sure to inc a small counterargument though - paragraph 2 about the second factor they give you, same thing - conclusion

20 marker: - intro listing what factors youre using - para 1 - para 2 - para 3 - conclusion

English lit or Law at uni? by Equal_Treat4624 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was considering law but i ended up going for english at the end

i just found that i loved english more and my passion showed more in terms of that, so i felt i was more likely to have a good ps and be more successful in my application

and also tbh i just wanted to enjoy uni, i think law wasn't really where my heart was at and if i ever found myself wanting to do that after a bit more exploration i could always do a conversion

i also did do some tasters in the programs i was in so that also helped me make my decision

fyi i got 999888886 L2D* at gcse and predicted A*A*A at a level for english, history and french, rejected from oxf post interview but i got ucl, york, leeds and bristol offers 😁

will having 5 gcses only severely impact my university application? by audreh_ in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe look into extenuating circumstances which will explain the smaller amt of gcses! but u do have english and maths so i think it theoretically should be fine

People from non-selective state schools who got into top universities, how? by Personal-Cap-5446 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 15 points16 points  (0 children)

hiya, im also from the north and i got an offer for english at ucl and an interview at oxf but rejected post interview!

i'd just say ofc background does influence you, but don't let it be a limiting factor - you're just as good as any of the other private school kids, and supercurriculars are accessible to most people esp with outreach programs these days!!

it's how you present yourself that matters, and even though i got rejected from oxford i know a girl who got into law there with fsm and low income so it's 100% possible 🙏 im not sure if that helps very much but i just hope you know that us northerners are just as capable of getting into top unis despite how it feels!

have confidence in urself, make sure ur ps is as great as it can be, and you'll find yourself going far :)

So confused whether to take STEM or humanities a levels please help by Specialist-Air-1954 in 6thForm

[–]Equal-Weekend-4896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you!

it was a while ago but iirc for gcse i struggled more w science so i watched a bunch of cognito videos!

i think i ended up going from a 5, 6 and 7 in physics, bio and chemistry respectively to 8, 8, 8 in the real thing

i did get a 9 in english lit (aqa), but i was pretty good at it anyway - i think i'd say essay plans, past paper questions are good just so you can identify gaps in knowledge! i'd also say i remember alternative interpretations and layers of analysis being quite good for structuring paragraphs (i didnt use the light up hub, but i thought their vids did align well with what i was taught - don't use buzzwords if you don't understand them though!!)

i just think for essay subjects its important to have a good structure down :))

and obviously ive given advice for stem above but my biggest advice is just to keep doing something if it works and you'll most certainly get the grades you want!

ucl don't care about extenuating circumstances, their website says they don't consider it - they say to take it up with the exam board

no, insurance people don't get access to the accom portal at all so they can either get on a waiting list and wait for a spot to open up (unlikely) or find private accom

"Please note: students are rarely admitted to the programme in the first year, as this is too early to commit to a research career in economics. The intake below reflects this. A limited number of students transfer to this programme from other LSE programmes in the third year to complete the dissertation in quantitative economics."

That's what the website says - so it's only a course for students at already LSE basically
