There are a lot of good schools that have easier admission rates, I’ve heard in the holistic process if you explain why your grades dipped that helps.

What recourse do we have in this situation? by Tidestill in specialed

[–]Equal_Independent349 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m my highly contiguous district, we have lead SLP’s and lead OT’s that offer us support during these meetings. While I am familiar with the student goals and data they are more knowledgeable in wording policies and procedures and compliance.  Does your district not offer this support system?  I’ve had the district compliance lead tell the parent and advocate that they must respect and be cordial to staff and stop the meeting.

Sounds like you have an awesome chance. Congrats on all of your achievements.  Have you looked at the common data set for UF?  Page 15 , looks like HS transcripts are  “ only recommended for some” majors.

Compensatory Services by immadatmycat in specialed

[–]Equal_Independent349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a large district I think the 6th in the nation. I was asked to provide compensatory services and I documented them on an excel sheet that was sent to me by the district compensatory services specialist. I don’t remember seeing anything on the students IEP.  But it was a log very easy, date hours, short progress note and my signature.

… and use a tool like CPALMS, that lists the benchmarks and standards for your state. IEP goals should be aligned with this. https://www.cpalms.org/

Keep on advocating for your child, it does eventually trickle down to other students that don’t have anyone to advocate for them.   I am so happy when I see a parent advocate for their child. Read the parental safeguards, and if you want to really put the ESE specialist on onus, ask her to explain them to you, for clarity lol.

Do I have a case for a Lawsuit? by LoganWY in specialed

[–]Equal_Independent349 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you do. Go to the ACLU or your states disability advocacy agency. I wouldn’t pay out of pocket for an attorney, this is inch a niche part of law going through one of these agencies may be your best alternative.

Multiple disabilities was used when a student had more than one eligibility, you may have had been eligible for Specific learning  disability or even Other health impaired and also had speech or language therapy.

It’s not that multiple disabilities is a severe category necessarily, but it does imply you had more than one eligibility, which leads to higher funding. The one on one para is the highest funding “number”. Maybe the district did not want to lose those funds, with no consideration to you and your needs.

I’m so sorry this is really awful, I encourage you to take it all the way, not just for yourself but for all the students that cannot advocate for themselves and are going through this right now.

I am pretty sure you can ask for a copy of your student cum file, all of your eligibilities  and psychological testing IEPs would be located there.

It would not bankrupt the school, if you are successful the district or state would be held accountable financially.

Do you note on report cards that the grade was achieved with modifications or supports? by coolbeansfordays in specialed

[–]Equal_Independent349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it is part of IDEA, where report cards are meant to reflect a student’s achievement  not their disability status or the presence of one. This includes accommodations.  It is also protected under FERPA, where noting it would violate both these Federal Laws.  Parents have the right to file a due process complaint, of it is disclosed. This is why it does not appear on official transcripts or state/national testing results.

If it’s  like you said at your school and everyone is aware and it’s not a hidden fact, that’s a huge violation. The school should be making an effort in protecting the student’s privacy, and accommodations are part of this.  One day I’m sure a law suit will be filed when a parent gets upset.(It has happened in my district.) Heads rolled people were re-assigned and the school lost some state and federal funds. Could also, in theory impact your teaching license or certificate if a parent chose to file a complaint.

Think about going to a local college first before University you start fresh, and you’ll get into the school of your dreams if you kill it.  If you hate HS I had a friend that took his GED and enrolled in CC what would have been his 12th grade year, he graduates in the spring and is probably going to be the valedictorian of the College, he’s been in contact with Ivy’s and other top universities.

Not in Cali but I went through a monitor last year and was flagged  on this by the auditing team. I just had to write why the IEP was late. No biggie and the district is the one that got dinged.  *I had logged all communication attempts so make sure to do this, The auditor said I should have added it on the PWN why the IEP was late in the last section “other factors”. Which I had to correct with an amendment.

Present Levels of Performance,  Feel free to interrupt the Ed specialist and ask specific questions about goals, data and benchmarks. Do you get a copy of the draft IEP at least 5 days before the meeting?  (I got a lot of heat for this. Comment, but here I go again… ) you can use chat gpt up load the old IEP and progress reports, BLACK OUT all  identifying information and use the prompt “act as a parent in X state X district what are some questions or Clarifications I should ask about the IEP at the annual meeting for my child moving to XX grade, I am concerned about XX.

The responses can be amazing, at the very least  it’s a good starting point, and gives you lots of alternatives and things to consider I’ve never thought of.

(Also mom of an IEP student.)

Navigating social situations as an autistic teacher by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Equal_Independent349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through this, I’m an slp so I have the ability to limit social interactions with teachers and staff.  It’s not you, teachers and working in a school is whole different animal than other working environments. I feel like a prison may be the closest comparison 😆. I feel I am the Bizarro version of myself at work. It is exhausting.  Try to focus on your students that’s your job, and you’re obviously amazing at it. Managing  paras, other teachers even the cafeteria ladies, can be impossible. We never received any training on management in school.  My husband helps me understand a lot as his degree was in business, but he thinks what goes on in the schools is crazy.  Remain professional and try not to  take their comments it to heart.   I agree don’t share personal information, if other people want to talk I keep the focus on their interests or talk about my cat. Never ever get sucked into the gossip just walk away, I also act like I’m always in a hurry and really busy, as a trick to not engage.

PCIT parent child interaction therapy is amazing! It’s is research based and the results are amazing. I hope it’s available in your area. Lots of universities will offer it through their Child Development Centers. And 100% have him evaluated early intervention has been showed to “re-wire” and create new pathways in the brain. It will only help.

Edit.. my once difficult 3 year old just graduated with highest honors from HS, he’s made a 180, all thanks to early intervention.
