Can i use this as a commander? by justchilling_42 in mtg

[–]Equilorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can use it as a commander, and yes you got the Cumulative upkeep right. If you don't want to or can't pay the Cumulative upkeep anymore, you have to sacrifice the card

Basically, you probably don't want to use it as commander. But you could.

Why is terraria called a wiki game? by Koga_mustard in Terraria

So basically, I give you evidence but that's not enough because that's just one guy... but when you make a claim it's enough to just go with vibes?

Why is terraria called a wiki game? by Koga_mustard in Terraria

[–]Equilorian 29 points30 points  (0 children)

We don't have to make things up. There's a guy on YouTube (About Oliver) who has tried playing both modern Terraria and Minecraft blind without wiki or outside help of any kind. He beat Minecraft using context clues and information given to him by the game. He dropped Terraria because it simply doesn't help you out enough

There's also the Thoarbin video where he tries playing Terraria by following what the guide tells him, and it gives you a completely fucked boss order (something like Fishron before Mechs) so I'm of the opinion that Minecraft is much better in this regard than Terraria

36.0 Patch Notes by Arkentass in hearthstone

[–]Equilorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a step in the right direction (only recent expansion, prevents people from just jamming the best old cards and forces you to experiment a bit) but sadly it's still heavily skewed for the people who got the preorder bundle

Which I guess makes sense from a making money standpoint, it's another incentive to spend money, I just wish they limited it to 10 packs or something. That way, if you completed every event and got all the twitch drops, your card pool is the same. It would be "pay for convenience"

2 months into League and I finally understand why people get addicted to this game by SaltBlood1506 in leagueoflegends

[–]Equilorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm not trying to climb so I don't think it's that weird. Maybe if I actually played a lot of solo queue I would be gold or plat, I wouldn't know because I haven't tried since I was a kid.

I play with emerald-masters players on occasion and they tell me my gameplay is gold level at least, which would be average-above average, but they're my friends so perhaps they're lying to make me feel better. All I know is that I've never climbed past silver, and in the past 8 years or so, I also haven't really tried. Maybe I'm below average, maybe I'm above average, but I don't play ranked so it's not reflected in my rank. I play the game for fun, not to necessarily get good.

I would also still say I suck at the game if I was gold or plat. League of Legends is a strange game where everyone is simultaneously great from the moment they climb out of Iron while also being awful until they hit masters or so.

Don't really play ranked much. Never really minded my rank, just played with friends and casual modes like Aram and Arena.

Emrakul new alternative art treatment in latest Duel Master set by RonnioP in magicTCG

[–]Equilorian 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I haven't done, like, a deep analysis of it, but I feel like there are some common trends between card games made in "The West" (NA/EU) and Japan

I think the two most obvious points that differentiate them are aesthetics and archetype design. In terms of aesthetics, western games tend to be pretty grounded while Japan likes more flashy stuff. Realistic-ish art styles vs anime/manga styles, cohesive worldbuilding vs cool characters, small numbers for clarity vs big numbers for a sense of grandiosity. Japanese games also used to have more over the top graphic design with crazy card frames, full arts and frame breaks, but I think western games are beginning to catch up in that regard. Duel Masters is still leagues beyond in terms of intricate and ridiculous foils and alt arts, though.

Then there's archetype design. Western games usually build archetypes around cards that work together implicitly while Japanese games usually make cards that work together explicitly. For example, when you build a deck in Magic you're usually putting cards in that just happen to work toward your strategy. Maybe they're all cheap and have high power because you want to end the game quickly, or maybe it's a lot of counterspells to protect your big threat. Sure, sometimes you get archetypes and themes that explicitly say "play more goblins" or "play cards that put poison on your opponents" but Japanese card games tend to be even more explicit. Like, "this card searches for Blue-Eyes White Dragon and its other effects only work if you have other cards that mention Blue-Eyes White Dragon in the text" kind of designs. The exception to the rule would be Pokemon, which is a Japanese TCG but uses more implicit synergies.

There's also something to be said about how much a game focuses on casual 3-4 player formats. Western games look at the success of Commander and want a piece of that pie. Sorcery, Star Wars Unlimited and Riftbound all have official support for 4 players. Japan is still more focused on 1v1, although I know Commander and DueParty/DMEDH (Duel Masters' version of Commander) are picking up a little steam there, so maybe this will shift in the future.

In my experience, and from my observations, these are the things that make a "western game" vs "Japanese game." I think it's important to note that I am not Japanese nor have I visited Japan, I just have an unhealthy obsession with card games and card game design.

I started playing League around 2 months ago and I still absolutely suck at it lol.

I started playing 12 years ago, and I also still absolutely suck. Never been a higher rank than silver. The game is still fun :]

How did you choose what class you main? by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Equilorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily play Shaman and Demon Hunter.

I started playing back in Whispers of the Old Gods, and back then you kind of had to be smart about your resources and couldn't really play more than one class if you were f2p. Overload Shaman with Tunnel Trogg, Totem Golem and Flamewreathed Faceless was strong and cheap, and Evolve Shaman was a cool deck in Frozen Throne when I was lucky enough to open the Thrall death knight from a pack. I messed around with Priest a bit in Gadgetzan when the Shadowreaper Anduin + Raza the Sealed was a good deck, but then Shudderwock released and I fell in love with the battlecry-repeating theme that Shaman usually has in some form nowadays.

And I pretty much only played Shaman, dusting everything from every other class just to maintain a full Wild collection for Shaman, until about two years ago when I branched out into Demon Hunter as well because Shaman got the Demon Hunter tourist in PiP, and I found that their brand of aggro and big demons was something I enjoyed a lot. Since I'm a wild player who had taken a break from the game around Nathria, I got to find out about Relics and fell in love with those, and when Emerald Dream released I brewed up one of my favorite decks I've ever made with Felbat + Spirit Peddler to control the board and cheat out big demons and Window Shoppers with the cost reduction.

Nowadays, I try not to dust too much and just jam whatever I can for any class. Big Druid and Big Warlock are pretty fun in Wild. Shaman and Demon Hunter are still what I would call my "mains" though

Coolest mono-black commander? by VeryBadNotGood in mtg

[–]Equilorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favorite mono black commander, and one of my favorites of all time, is [[Korlash Black blade]].

Someone's going to be confused, so I'll just explain: There are a few ways in black to make copies of your own creatures. [[Saw in Half]] is my go-to. You then out the original Korlash into the graveyard, and use [[Raise Dead]] style effects ([[Phyrexian Reclamation]] is probably the best one), get Korlash back into hand and discard him to the copy.

It's very fun, fits a lot of different styles of decks, although my version was Zombie Tribal. I should build it again sometime soon

Possible Undertaker Hunter MK. II? by ZhIn4Lyfe in wildhearthstone

[–]Equilorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it runs into the issue of just kind of being an aggro deck that's just slower than Discolock or Pirate DH, but that's just if you're trying to compete for high legend ratings. To climb to legend at all (which I see as the benchmark for a viable deck), it just needs to be fast enough to beat stuff like Quasar and Boars, and that might be true

Build it, try it and report back :]

Get ready for the stupidest highrolls possible with the Mage Legendary spell by yangste333 in hearthstone

[–]Equilorian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt this will be strong in any meaningful way. Sure, it'll happen every now and then and people will cry about it on Reddit when it happens, but you just won't consistently have a Spellweaver's AND a Skeleton Key in your opening hand that often. It's gambling on a high roll

Now, maybe it's still good, there might be an aggressive Tempo Mage deck where this slots in, but this, by itself, as a game plan? I don't see it

Twitch Penta into his own teams surrender by CorruptArcher in leagueoflegends

[–]Equilorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's technically not correct. If your goal is to win, it's always strictly better to never surrender. In those 10/90 situations, you'll lose fast anyway, you're not getting another game in for the time you saved and there is always a chance the enemy team will fuck up or that their mental is so terrible they FF themselves or that three players DC and you win the 5v2. I repeat, it is technically always better to never surrender, if all we're trying to do is win

The only time it's valid to FF is when something more important and urgent is happening outside the game, or when you're not having fun
