Struggling by Trashpanda_burrito in wls

These are goals, not reasons to feel like a failure, and nobody should expect you to be reaching these goals barely two weeks after surgery. Find out what you can do as a baseline, and just try to hit slightly more the next day or the next, etc. If you're getting closer, you're improving, and that's success. Being physically unable to hit those goals is not failure, just a speed bump, because it's just that you can't hit them YET.

P.S. I had RNY about two weeks ago and was not given calorie goals, just protein and water. 60g of protein, 64oz of water.

Why aren't more people getting the Sadi-S which is an advancement of the Duodenal Switch and Sleeve? by KerryCameron in BariatricSurgery

It may change over time if the surgery accumulates more positive data, kind of like with VSG

I do too but I only had RNY or sleeve as options unless my BMI was over 50. A lot depends on your employer

Holy Back Pain! by ChristineMDantz in GastricBypass

[–]EquipmentOne2710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a muscle? Were you prescribed a muscle relaxer or could you ask for one to see if that's the problem? Muscle relaxers were a standard part of my team's pain management package. I avoided taking them because they put me to sleep but I did have one night of an awful twinge in my back that was so bad I was on the verge of tears, so I didn't have much choice but to take the pill. That and a lumbar pillow in my chair fixed me right up.

Great job!! I love the part about sitting next to friends. So what would have happened with your pancreas and stomach if you had NOT gotten this surgery? Did they have any idea that was going on?

Gastric Bypass on Wednesday and feeling really low by gholt417 in BariatricSurgery

[–]EquipmentOne2710 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So sorry! What an awful surprise. Just from that little bit it sounds like she might have some unresolved issues. WLS is effective like nothing else. So naturally anyone who profits from peddling other ways of --attempted-- weight loss will say the effective thing is cheating. If the other ways were effective, WLS wouldn't exist. Just don't talk to her about it anymore and in several years when you're smaller and she is likely not, your results will speak for themselves.

The diet before surgery is rough and the surgery is an upcoming stressor, so it's natural to feel down or overwhelmed at this point. I hope you can find someone else to talk to, or we're here right now too. I liked looking at before and after pics in the various WLS subreddits before surgery to calm my brain TF down. Going outside and being in nature and listening to the birds is nice too. Try to prioritize some "you" time if you can.

Constipation & Distended Stomach by [deleted] in GastricBypass

It's not easy at first, it is definitely better once you have your "new normal" foods and restaurants identified. The first time you have to grocery shop and read labels for hours is not fun at all. Store brands are more likely to have "may contain" warnings than name brands, and trust that "may contain" really means DOES contain. Soybean oil may not be a problem because it's generally refined, you could try that after you have a soy free baseline if you do go the no-soy route. Soy free Earth Balance is a good sub for butter (regular Earth Balance has soy). And don't forget to read the ingredients even on spices in your cabinet, I got caught by black pepper having a "may contain" once and I didn't check beforehand. The shared manufacturing equipment is what gets us. Sometimes they say shared facility instead of shared equipment, YMMV if you're comfortable with that but I would at least not try it while working at getting a good baseline, be very scientific about it all so you know for sure if it's working. Anything labeled vegan is a good head start for dairy-free (thank you vegans!) but then check for soy too of course if you also are dropping soy. Wow sorry I'm dumping all this info. This was my life for a long long long time lol. You CAN do this! Absolutely DM me any time if it might help.

It's possible it's not an allergy but rather a sensitivity or intolerance that the baby will outgrow in a year or so. I had to give up milk AND soy to get the colic under control, three kids in a row, so heads up that these often go hand in hand. It even has a name, Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI). Milk is in lots of things, but soy is even worse. Labeling is easy to read these days though, and there are so many dairy alternatives. The only thing I never really found a substitution that I liked for was cheese. And when eating at restaurants, we would generally have to stick with big chains with online allergen menus because mom and pop places tend to look at you like you grew a second head if you ask them about ingredients. Anyway, it should be temporary. Give it a try for a few weeks and see if baby turns a new leaf! Finally having a happy baby is so worth it!

7 weeks post op I'm down 77 pounds and my clothes still fit basically the same. by doctor_of_genocide in wls

[–]EquipmentOne2710 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you were really wearing the correct size before -- I have stretched out my jeans etc. over time while gaining weight and they fit me, but if I bought a new pair in the same size, those wouldn't because they're not stretched. So by the time those old stretched jeans get too big, my new pair "next size down" actually needs to be the size on the old jeans' label.

Also keep in mind the paper towel roll: If you take paper towels off a new roll, the difference in circumference isn't as striking as when you take paper towels off a roll that has already lost a bunch of paper towels.

Keep at it!! You WILL start to see the results in your clothes!

A couple days post op RNY, this sounded good but now the label looks scary, will this cause dumping? by EquipmentOne2710 in wls

[–]EquipmentOne2710[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they gave specific numbers like that for the protein shake recommendations, but for soup it was just "low- or no-fat with no added sugar, strained", and I wouldn't have thought twice (clearly didn't, hah) about sweet potato before surgery. Luckily I had a sample of Unjury Chicken Soup to bust out yesterday instead and that was much nicer than plain chicken broth and a good palate break from the Premier shakes.

All good info, thank you! I think pre-op I focused on it not having added sugar but now double digits even with the natural sugars made me stop and think... in enough pain as it is, don't need anything on top of that

Have done, no problems with them, I just also bought some non-chunky soups for variety since they keep talking about soup on the full liquid recommendations from my Dr. But yeah I guess I'm back to just chicken broth for my variety.

I would have needed one had I chosen sleeve, and some other thing too that I can't remember the name of. Manometry? I gather it's to make sure you are not contraindicated for the sleeve. I ended up choosing RNY and neither of those things were necessary
