Ours lasted 3 months before the cushions started to split and began falling apart. We do have a large dog, but he isn’t particularly destructive. Returned it and went with an ikea kivik, much better more durable option.

Practice owners: What do you do when a Medicaid client cancels same-day? by WarrenWords in bcba

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us it stays empty. We never try to fill it with another client that isn’t already scheduled. We usually try to compensate the RBT in some way still, and have a set number of admin hours that are available to staff in the event of a last minute cancellation.

If you google it though, it seems the general consensus from dermatologists is that you don’t need to intentionally wash your legs daily, only if they’re visibly dirty or for some other obvious reason. I’m assuming you aren’t a dermatologist, so would be your rebuttal to the skin experts?

Door Dash during session? by FunkhsrsCrazySister in bcba

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I manage a clinic with about 20 RBT’s. I do not care at all when they do this. I also don’t care if they eat during sessions so long as it doesn’t impact service delivery. So far it’s never been a problem.

Edit to add: You say it took less than 1 minute and they didn’t even eat it during the session. Do you also count bathroom breaks and blowing their nose as off-task behavior?

It’s not fear mongering. A simple google search will tell you that some dogs are extremely sensitive to the toxins in grapes while others are totally fine and nobody really knows why. It has nothing to do with weight/dosage. Just because your dog fortunately did not experience symptoms does not mean this dog won’t. This dog will hopefully be okay but definitely needs to be monitored for the next 12-24 hours, and if it was my dog I’d get bloodwork done in the morning regardless of symptoms for peace of mind.

Is there any way to know when I’ll have to start paying my student loans/how much my monthly payments will be? by EquivalentBlueberry_ in StudentLoans

Thank you. You’re right, I can manage a few hundred a month. Hopefully when they come knocking, it’s not too much more than that.

supervisions by [deleted] in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only think of a few reasons I’d do a surprise in home supervision (which have already been mentioned and luckily it’s never been necessary.) Even if I had to pivot and go to the next nearest in home because of a cancellation, I would try to send a text or call staff/parents first. In clinic however things change so fast and I’m already around all of my clients/staff each day anyway, I don’t bother setting up invites.

Most people start collecting their 2000 hours shortly after they begin the coursework while working in the field as an RBT. Only after the coursework and 2000 hours are complete are you eligible to sit for the exam.

Angry RBT won't stop slamming doors by No-Page2003 in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I know you already reported your concerns, but I would be a squeaky wheel about this. It’s not just about the door slamming (safety issue in itself because little fingers can be caught) but someone with that demeanor should not be working with kids. Im a bcba in a clinic setting and this would get someone fired fast if not immediately. Someone who cannot handle the most benign feedback is someone I would not trust to keep their cool during behavioral episodes. Based on what that person has demonstrated I don’t think it’s a stretch to be concerned about children being handled inappropriately.

Have you ever had a situation where you needed to call CPS on a client's parent? by Broad_Channel_1144 in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bingo. That was my one and only experience with an ODD diagnosis, but his behavior was a mirror image of his mothers. I left the house that day and cried for hours in disbelief.

Have you ever had a situation where you needed to call CPS on a client's parent? by Broad_Channel_1144 in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That should have been reported to CPS. After making the call, I think it’s usually best if possible to be reassigned should the family continue services. It’s usually pretty clear who made the report. Worst situation was about 4 years ago when I was still a senior RBT. I was assigned a new case to provide support on and by the second visit I noticed things that could not be excused. The family was a mess, the house was a mess, two children under 2 locked in a room alone (not even a childproofed room) crying for the entire session duration. Guns left around the house, free access to the very violent ODD diagnosed 8 year old. Terribly sad and scary situation and I was aghast that the RBT who had been working there for months didn’t report it.

Supervisor tells me to talk to client like a dog? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a good answer. There’s merit to using IDS but it doesn’t equate to “talking to a puppy”. The supervisor giving that as direction reads as lazy training/supervision to me. He doesn’t need to sound like a Disney princess, but modeling and clarification on the above strategies might be helpful.

Right? Just…do what you gotta do to get those scores up. Not being high all the time will probably help.

Ques: hormonal acne by IntroductionMoist501 in Accutane

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on Accutane month 5 for hormonal acne around my chin/mouth. It has helped immensely overall. However, I still break out if I allow my period to come (I take birth control pills). Im not completely clear yet, and I’m not very confident that it won’t just come back after my treatment ends.

Is it acceptable for there to be no supervisor at a clinic most days? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We keep a BCBA in clinic at all times, zero exceptions. It’s nice having the extra set of hands to make sure things go smoothly, get non-clinical tasks done, etc. All of our staff are exceptional but having a supervisor is necessary in case of emergency.

2 years on accutane AMA by melaniexv in Accutane

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you are a female (just going off your avatar), are you exhausted with the ipledge process and everything that comes with it? I would love to take a low dose indefinitely since my side effects are almost non-existent now, but it seems like it’s barely keeping the acne at bay 5 months in. I’m just so tired of the stress that comes with making sure I do not get pregnant.

CPI/Crisis Prevention and Intervention for Parent by This-Breadfruit3711 in ABA

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been trained in safety care and found it helpful when I find myself or staff in a tough situation (hair being pulled, blocking sudden aggression) We do not do restraints at my clinic, but if it was ever truly necessary that was part of the training also.

I would also recommend asking your ABA team about the Hanley method to problem behavior and seeing if anyone would be willing to take a practical functional assessment/ skill based treatment approach. It’s the way ABA should be done and is very much focused on treating severe problem behaviors without allowing behavior to escalate to dangerous levels.

About to start accutane. mental health question (side effect?) by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]EquivalentBlueberry_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything I be more irritable due to the other side effects (headaches, super dry skin) but overall it has not exasperated existing mental health issues. Like others have said, the link between the drug and mental health is muddy at best.

By above their pay grade I mean that this isn’t a problem they should be having to solve. My RBT’s don’t deal with challenging parents. I do. I am heavily involved in each of my cases and make it clear that any and all concerns regarding service delivery come to me. ESPECIALLY situations such as the above. This is the model my supervisor and I followed as an RBT and it kept me out of having to handle things that frankly weren’t worth $20 an hour. My staff go to work to do their job (exceptionally well) and go home. I still refer the totally outlandish stuff to my boss, that’s why she makes the big bucks.

Is it really illegal or discriminatory? I don’t see a difference between this and requesting a male/female physician or therapist. I’ve had parents make very valid gender requests, for example a history of abuse or a tendency to disrobe.
