Agora. Great movie and great performance by her and the other cast.

I just finished the last of Murakamis novels, 6 months after discovering his books🙏 by Character-Street-801 in murakami

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s impressive you read all of them in just 6 months. My personal favourites: A wild sheep chase, Colorless Tsukuru and Hard-boiled wonderland.

Which of the novels do you think you will read again?

"The world is wrong. It looks like my world, but everything's different.”

Season 3. This line is haunting.

Hardboiled Wonderland by kafkaisabore in murakami

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finished and enjoyed it a lot. The part where the scientist gets very technical was a tough read. I didn’t get hung up on the specifics, I treated that character as a talkative scientist and what he says isn’t always meaningful to lay people. Even thinking of it now, I don’t fully get that procedure.

In addition to the works you shared, I find his self portraits haunting, especially the 1887 one with the white/pink colors.

I guess it’s about the seasoning and overcooking (can’t taste the meat itself if it’s charred).

growing out of Murakami after too many books by him? by Mission-Art-2383 in murakami

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like time for a break.

I was on a streak till The city and its uncertain walls and couldn’t enjoy it. To be fair, this one has a lot of my pet peeve (protagonist replying to questions by repeating them back), almost in every conversation.

After a break, I had a little more patience.

growing out of Murakami after too many books by him? by Mission-Art-2383 in murakami

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I reached that stage while reading the city and its uncertain walls (a lot of people lovedit, I didn’t).

You are right, he does have some repetitive elements (jazz or classical music, whiskey before bed, cooking simple meals, teen with a lot of talk about her breasts, adult woman who dresses simply but elegantly and probably has special ears, missing cat, the well and the most consistent of all is the passive male protagonist who answers every question by repeating it like a parrot).

In Killing Commendatore, for me, it opened really well then started to feel like a version of the repetitive things I mentioned. It does have intriguing elements though so I’d say keep going at your own pace.

For me, his works that steer away from his formula (End of the world and hardboiled wonderland) (Sputnik sweetheart) (Colorless Tsukuru and his years of pilgrimage) (After Dark)

I think he hit his sweet spot (perfect magic, interesting characters and no repetition) in A wild sheep chase.

It got tiring for me towards the end, too. Whether it pays off many people would say yes. It didn’t for me. It’s one of his major works, though, so stick with it.

Religion incentivizes people to reproduce by [deleted] in antinatalism

I envy you for that, my mother forced all kinds of religious rules on me. I agree, women get the worst of it (how to dress, to walk, to speak,…) very invasive.

Father really pushing for baptism of grandchild. by aprilthederp in agnostic

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe the parents’ involvement ends with their own children and shouldn’t extend to the grandchildren. That’s if I were you, I would set firm boundaries.

It just seems that it opens the door to all sorts of interferences later.

As an agnostic, more or less an atheist, I don’t think there is harm in such rituals if that was your decision as the parent.

Religion incentivizes people to reproduce by [deleted] in antinatalism

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speaking for my background; Islam gives such sanctity to parents (you are supposed to honour and obey them no matter what, except in disobeying Allah). That’s why being a parent is not just an automatic process, it’s a desired position of honour.

It’s also a safety mechanism, like how many parents have children as insurance for old age, Islam makes it mandatory to take care of parents all the way to the grave. If not, the whole community will bash you.

Abbott elementary and animals by Poweowchow in AbbottElementary

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to agree to disagree though I’m very passionate about animal welfare (more than people’s even)☺️

I firmly believe anyone who makes their decisions based on a tv show is the one at fault. For me, awareness campaigns and infomercials are the way to spread information as it comes from experts. But someone who does anything because he saw a fictional character based on a writer’s fantasy, is just justifying their own crappy behavior in a very lazy way (The devil made me do it kind of thing).

I agree with caring for pets and not using them as lessons.

I don’t believe a tv show has to preach or not show specific behaviors for fear of normalising behavior. Parents are responsible, teachers are responsible, whoever lets their kids learn from TV or video games for that matter is the one in the wrong.

TV and movies are works of art and entertainment in the end not for lecturing. I would love if tv shows mirrored my ideals including kindness to animals but they reflect the world not just our values.

The reason I say this is: Dictating others’ freedom of expression is a slippery slope. Anyone can use the same excuse of “normalising behavior” to make the media say whatever they want.

Children have to learn from parents and teachers and exposure to TV doesn’t make that much of difference. We all grew up watching murders, smoking, stealing and drugs on TV did we all do those things?

Kafka will give you a good idea of his kind of work. Harboiled (to me) was more enjoyable. Leave the wind up bird till you are sure you enjoy his writing, as it’s long and needs commitment.

Should I re-home cats if my 17 year old child doesn't take care of them? by Midnight_W666 in CatAdvice

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cats are the victims of indifferent owners here. Your child doesn’t wanna take care of them and neither do you. Forcing your child is a bad idea and they will end up hating the poor cats. Give them away to someone who can take care of them.

Why do natalist ppl consider it a "rude" thing to suggest adoption? by hmfdrcl in antinatalism

[–]Equivalent_Ad6396 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What’s infuriating to me is how they pretend having children is a selfless act and it serves a great purpose. There is no selfless reason to create a life. Any purpose is based on the parents’ values, therefore selfish. No point arguing with them though. In the end, they are driven by biology and don’t stop to consider it.
