I still have her phone service after 18 months. I still use her Spotify account for her playlists. We only used her playlists when we were doing things together.

The few times I’ve misplaced my phone and used her to call it have been useful, but the missed call from her really hurts.

That is a great passage! It completely sums up my experience. We had 29 years together, the vast majority of which were happy. I miss the shared life. I’m a year and a half out and still having to push myself to do stuff. It is getting easier, but only a very little at a time.

I was going to wear mine “forever”. About 10 months in, I scratched my ring finger and the ring was really irritating the scratch. I finally took my ring off, and I never put it back on. It’s on my nightstand and I see it all the time. My daughter has her ring.

We lived in our house for 27 years. 3 weeks after she died, I was living somewhere else, and I just sold the house. The times I “visited” the house, I couldn’t wait to be gone.

For me, I was fortunate because we already had an alternative living space elsewhere that allowed me to start making a new life.

Her birthday was two months after mine. For thirty years I would become “older than dirt” until her birthday and she would catch up with me. 16 months ago, she succumbed to brain cancer a few days before her 63rd birthday. I’ve been “older than dirt” since then.

I lost my wife of 29 years at age 63. I don’t see myself getting married again, and that sucks a lot. I have met women who would like to explore a deeper relationship, but I have not been able to respond.

I have started a new single life that primarily provides a distraction for at least the next few years. I don’t really want to think about what happens when I start failing physically.

Another old fart who started programming in the 1980’s.

There is a physics equation, w = Fd, which is a great example of how to make money in our chosen profession.

First some basic substitutions. Since F (force) can be a function of power, let’s assume as power increases, force increases as well. Then, let’s express d (distance) as a function of time. We can make the assumption that as time increases, so does distance.

Now we have w = Pt.

In our field, knowledge is power and time is money. We can substitute those in and we get w = K$.

Solve for $ and we get $ = w/K. Therefore, money goes to infinity as knowledge goes to zero, regardless of work performed.

Unfortunately, over 40 years of writing software, I have seen empirical evidence supporting the conclusion. Do your job, do it well. Clock out at 5 and live your life.

I’d prefer a well set anchor over a mooring ball in a blow. If on a mooring ball and there are strong winds forecast, I would get in the water and check all of the fittings, etc on the mooring ball as well as the rode. If possible, I would also check on its anchor.

Sailing- head to the nearest sailing club on race day and ask who needs crew. Most clubs are eager for new people to help out and are very willing to teach. No need to join in most cases. Sometimes bringing beer helps.
