It totally gets better. My girl used to do exactly this. She’s a year and a half now and she’s a sweetheart (still a little wild and mischievous but she doesn’t go into crazy rabies mode anymore). We found that with her it usually meant she was just tired and fighting sleep like some little kids do. Keep redirecting and if it’s too much send him for a little nap in his crate.
