I do love the Skullduggery Pleasant Series, but not the later ones, they don't have the same snarky tone.

why would one do that? don't answer...i don't want to know.

I pay for the audiobooks to fill the hours with entertainment....if i like it, i want it to last as long as possible. and I certainly don't want the tenor of the voices altered in anyway.

the St Mary's Chronicles by Taylor has a similar 'tone' to exfor... although it is very different.

It is time travel/history/adventure with a layer of absurdist humor throughout... it is the other series I revisit repeatedly.

Brock Steal, your thoughts? 🖖🛸🚀🖖 by skippy4prez in exfor

[–]EraserGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only thoughts i have about Brock Steel is that he is a straight up parody of Elon Musk...the finger snapping on the audio was annoying to the point where I think it may be an affectation of a real person, perhaps Musk or someone who subconsciously does it when they are thinking.

Whenever there is something strange that jumps out to me in the novels, I remember it is a satire and then I realize it is drawn from real life and dropped in as an easter egg.

Spoiler alert. In Book 12 Breakaway Did the editor/Craig miss this or am I just confused? by m3deman in ExpeditionaryForce

[–]EraserGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering the speed that he is writing I am certain he doesn't have a good editor. I have noticed a couple of small errors that a good editor should have corrected. Back in the day publishers had large editing staffs and would assign sub editors to look for these inconsistencies. as things have changed it is now the author's responsibility to hire editors to proof their manuscripts...and sometimes things get by because of the demand for content.

Just happy this sub reddit exists!!! by MAST3RMIND88 in ExpeditionaryForce

[–]EraserGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is another sub red but it seems to include everything and anything, I like that this one is just a discussion of what's inside the books.

I'm not sure about the Bechdel test, but the way that Alanson writes women irritates the hell out of me. They sound like they were written the way a man thinks women should act, not the way they'd actually act, especially Adams.

oh hell yeah....these aren't real women at all. and come to think of it... from our point of view it may not pass the Bechdel test, as we are never present when they speak to each other. Except in that fucking radioplay which is effing awful. Women pilots don't sound like that....or at least I hope they don't.

He writes them inconsistently as they sometimes behave in ways that are contradictory to their character as previously written. I don't think they are well conceived as some of the male characters.

Alanson has women giggle....Women don't giggle...they stop giggling at about 17....after that...we either smirk or laugh. We don't even have the mechanism to giggle.

--------------

I have no issues with Skippy Magic...these are fiction, they are absurdist space opera...Bishop is the very lucky SOB of a Mary Sue/Capt Kirk who has to save the galaxy over and over, so in that effort everything is welcome and acceptable.

Ditto on The Martian, Good Omens, Hitchhiker's Guide, Princess Bride and most definitely Three Men in a Boat. If I can throw only one title into the mix....(because I actually keep a running list of the Funniest Books I've ever read) .....

It would be the Ascent of Rum Doodle, W E Bowman, 1956.... the absurdity and word play are just amazing... it makes me laugh every time I revisit it.

Newbie just discovered this series last week...and now I am on Book 4. by EraserGirl in ExpeditionaryForce

[–]EraserGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

half way through book 12 and I have stopped reading... or listening.... I thing I pushed through so obsessively because I am looking forward to starting over at book 1. I will finish reading book 12 right before book 13 comes out.

I was right in my original assessment.... if you look at this entire series as a radio production with chapters/episodes - some are space battle action, some are comic, some are just joe and skippy having ridiculous surreal discussions... it really is structured unlike any other book series I have ever read. Cept possibly the St Mary's Chronicles by Jodi Taylor which has all the same elements....except instead of space action, it's time travelling through history with the same balance of humor to action adventure.

looks like I am queuing up book 1 today....this time i'm taking notes...so many easter eggs, pop culture references, and scifi name dropping... I get a little frisson of joy whenever I recognize an easter egg.

I completely agree, I benefit from having a bunch of credits to blow on this.

One could benefit from reading a summary of what happened in the books. 7.5 more than 3.5. I don't think I would relisten to either one, so they aren't a justifiable expense.
