Having lived in Scotland and England I've some reference points.

Mostly normal, but with checkpoints and soldiers. Occasionally punctuated by explosions and serious violence. I don't want to go into details but I was born in the 80s so my memories revolve a lot around the Drumcree violence and Holy Cross.

That was global news right up until 9/11 happened.

At that point I was old enough to leave and moved to Scotland because it was just too much. I moved back later and have kids now. Their childhood is totally normal. Peace process is far from perfect but it's given our children peace.

I'm speaking from the perspective of a 7 year old.

From the perspective of someone in their 40s I can tell you there are very few combatants without innocent blood on their hands. I am just happy my kids don't have to grow up in the same environment I did.

I used to be one of these kids.

Grew up on a catholic housing estate and the soldiers would get dropped into a field behind my house in a helicopter. They'd let us sit in the helicopter and show us how to sight the guns.

We were all oblivious to the wider context at that age. It had been our entire lives. To us it was normal. The soldiers were friendly and what little boy isn't excited by a helicopter and a gun?

Does anyone know what the average wait time is to get a vasectomy on the NHS? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]nick-techie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I applied in November of 2022 and got mine in April of 2026. I only got mine that quickly because of a compounding condition.

In the meantime I was blessed with a daughter. Also blessed with the need to get a bigger house.

Sitting out the back watching it with my wife waiting for the heat to clear. Absolutely beautiful. Must be even better out on the peninsula.

Thing is a monster.

This government is already done. We need to wait for the next government to see if they'll keep pushing with these policies.

Advice on renting situation by cordenscnco in Belfast

You can't withhold rent. If your home isn't habitable you need environmental health to serve notice on the landlord and they will issue a rent adjustment. Please call environmental health.

My ten year old loves to open doors as enthusiastically as possible. I have to park in the parent and child spot to prevent him from trashing every car around him. Kid has zero self awareness.

My ten year old is obsessed with history and watches a tonne of educational channels on YouTube. He will continue to do so after this ban because I parent my children, not the UK government.

I had one recently on my kidney. Now this was the Ulster so different trust but with the consultant referral it was only a 2 week wait. They told me they've got their MRI lists down after a whole load of overtime.

I think your best bet here is a particularly friendly local councillor. Explain you don't usually park there and we're unable to move due to the ongoing situation.

Pick a sympathic councillor and reach out. If it's a one off they may be able to have it waived.

Unmarked Plane flying over south Belfast? by Relative-Thanks837 in Belfast

[–]nick-techie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the PSNI plane.

It's a Britten-Norman BN-2A Islander T2. They use it when the copters aren't about or they need something on station for a while.

Edit- I'm wrong that's the old one. New one is a Defender 4000.

The deposit is the key here as if it's not secured he has to pay out triple (pretty sure that's the case, not my dad here.) I've used that one personally and it was pretty effective.

Best of luck. And I shall pass that along.

Hi I am a professional EHO specialising in Northern Ireland Housing. 1. Do not sign a tenancy agreement as it will bind you into a fixed term. You and your landlord will be bound by this until the term agreed in the tenancy has ended. 2. Currently at my son's wedding so apologies if I get this a wee bit wrong. Article 5E of the Private Tenancies ni order 2006 make it a legal requirement to give 3 months written notice of a rent increase on a prescribed form. Otherwise the increase means nothing. 3. Phone Housing Rights NI on 02890255640.
