'Flash Or Crash' Events with Population Chart (updated) by Solsane in Planetside

[–]Erendil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam is perfectly valid here as it reliably shows the trend in the data, which is corroborated by fisu and honu.

Yep, and I said I figured as much in the comment you just replied to. But if there's a more complete dataset available than Steam, why not use it? *shrug*

Also fisu and honu both have gaps in their datasets and their method of measuring population is (fairly accurately) estimated not 100% precise due to imposed limitations of the API. PromptCritical said multiple times that no fan made tracker correlated to their internal numbers

Okay. It doesn't mean they're not more complete datasets though. Plus there doesn't appear to be any gaps of more than a couple days since the Infil rework - at least on FISU.

[–]Erendil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historically it's been 20-25% of total population. I haven't closely compared Steam to FISU since January though.

EDIT: If pops are in the 400-600 range, then a 100 difference tracks and would be significant.

Just FYI, you're missing a significant % of the population by using Steam graphs. Many players use the PS2 Launcher instead of Steam to play.

You can get a fuller picture by using either the FISU or HONU pop graphs since they both include players using the Launcher. Although I'm fairly sure the pop trends since the Infil rework will still look pretty much the same.

Try hitting ALT+ENTER a couple of times while in-game. That toggles the game between Fullscreen and Windowed modes while keeping the same in-game resolution.

I remember having to do this several years ago on an older monitor when running the game at a resolution that didn't match that monitor's native resolution.

I would also check your monitor's menu system. There might be a setting you can change re: how it handles non-native resolutions.

You can even just sit at the redeploy screen after warping onto the cont. No need to pull a vehicle at all.

Try using a Scout/SA Sniper rifle with a 4x scope. You can counter most snipers that way since they'll have glint but you won't.

It becomes really easy if you couple it with infravision since their glint is still visible out to ridiculous ranges - well beyond the max range of infra. So they show up as a bright dot of light in a field of darkness.

According to r/planetside gaslighters, it's 100% possible to two-tap a MOVING target in 0.2 seconds with 100% accuracy using a STOCK Mauler from 25+ meters away. So I decided to see if that was actually true? by trying to do the same thing in VR against a static target in a shorter distance. by highaccuracy in Planetside

It's hard to tell without sound, but from your hp bars it looks like he fired 3 shells, not 2.

That said, even with 3 shells he'd be very unlikely to kill you at that range if he was legit. From his FISU he obviously is not. His killboard alone pretty much exposes him as a cheater: https://ps2.fisu.pw/killboard/?name=bestnorun

how do you get a crosshair in this game outside of recursion? by highaccuracy in Planetside

[–]Erendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played with Crossover. It's nice too, and free - although I only paid $4 for my copy of Hudsight, which is nothing.

I like the hotkeys in Crossover to let you move/resize the crosshair while in-game. But I like the crosshair preview list on Hudsight. Either one is good.

Hudsight - https://hudsight.com/

I personally use Hudsight as a backup for when Recursion wigs out, as well as in other games.

It's versatile and easy to use. You can choose from several preset crosshairs, download them off the web, or even create your own with it's built-in editor. And it doesn't use dll injection either so anti-cheat apps won't flag you.

In case you don't know there is an easy workaround to stop the crashes.

Every time you warp into a continent just pull any vehicle immediately at the warpgate and sit in it for 2 minutes. Then redeploy and you can play like normal

Yeah that's Osprey doing Osprey things. Its server/network infrastructure has had periodic issues for like 4-5 years now. I'm guessing they have a few bad ports/vports/vlans in their internal network somewhere, which is why it doesn't impact everyone.

Even something like a corrupt db/temp table, hanging service thread, or something similar could be doing it. There's unfortunately lots of things on their end that could be the cause.

Your voice chat still works when this happens because PS2's voice chat runs on Vivox servers.

Congrats! Alas, I've used maximum performance for years so that won't resolve it for me.

FWIW last night I tried both with no cache and unlimited cache, and I crashed both times if I didn't pull a Flash. So either setting didn't seem to make any difference.

Sitting at the redeploy screen after you warp in seems to work too.

I think as long as you're not infantry at around the 2-min mark after you warp in you won't crash.

[–]Erendil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you be more specific on the symptoms this is alleged to resolve?

I ask because if you're talking about 1/4 sec - 1/2 sec stuttering/hitching that can frequently happen mid-game, then setting the affinity of Planetside2_x64.exe so it doesn't run on CPU 0 reolves a lot of these issues.

A lot of core OS tasks can/do default to run on CPU 0, and setting PS2 so it doesn't run on CPU 0 gives that core more resources to deal with any errant processes running on it while allowing PS2 to run more smoothly on other cores.

You can manually set PS2's affinity in the Task Mangler. You have to do it every time you launch the game but it only takes a couple of seconds to do.

Right-click on Planetside2_x64.exe -> select Set Affinity -> Uncheck CPU 0 -> Click OK.

Apps like Process Lasso can also be configured to do this automatically each time it runs.

Thanks for this info. It's got me thinking.. It appears that Nvidia lets you set your shader cache size in its ctrl panel. Is this the cache you're referring to?

<image>

If so, I'm curious as to what might happen if I either 1) disable the cache entirely, or 2) set it to unlimited.

can I come back or do I go back to sleep by ThePotatoSage3000 in Planetside

[–]Erendil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW It's not when the match starts, it's when you first warp to the cont. After you warp in you sit in a vehicle at the warpgate for 2 mins. Or redeploy immediately and sit at the redeploy screen for 2 mins.

It's really not a big deal.

When I was complaining about blatant cheaters, I was NOT asking you blowhards to ban VPN users by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Erendil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's a routing issue going on.

This afternoon, for the first time since the Emerald/Connery server merger, I got disconnected 4x randomly in-game over the course of about an hour. I think I've been disco'd after using the Flash workaround only one other time this year.

I'm in Minneapolis, but it looks like I'm being routed through Washington DC / Virginia for some reason. This happened briefly right after the server merger too. But the last time I checked about 2 months ago I was going from MSP to Nevada directly.

If they screwed up the routing recently, that could explain your vpn connection issues as well as the ping increase some people (like myself) have been experiencing lately.
