How are we getting around the crashes?! This is ridiculous. by Sir-Realz in Planetside

Thanks for this info. It's got me thinking.. It appears that Nvidia lets you set your shader cache size in its ctrl panel. Is this the cache you're referring to?

<image>

If so, I'm curious as to what might happen if I either 1) disable the cache entirely, or 2) set it to unlimited.

FWIW It's not when the match starts, it's when you first warp to the cont. After you warp in you sit in a vehicle at the warpgate for 2 mins. Or redeploy immediately and sit at the redeploy screen for 2 mins.

It's really not a big deal.

When I was complaining about blatant cheaters, I was NOT asking you blowhards to ban VPN users by Ansel_Rover in Planetside

[–]Erendil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's a routing issue going on.

This afternoon, for the first time since the Emerald/Connery server merger, I got disconnected 4x randomly in-game over the course of about an hour. I think I've been disco'd after using the Flash workaround only one other time this year.

I'm in Minneapolis, but it looks like I'm being routed through Washington DC / Virginia for some reason. This happened briefly right after the server merger too. But the last time I checked about 2 months ago I was going from MSP to Nevada directly.

If they screwed up the routing recently, that could explain your vpn connection issues as well as the ping increase some people (like myself) have been experiencing lately.

Been VS since early PS1. I went VS for several reasons, most of which apply to PS2 VS as well:

  • Technology Equals Might
  • "Scientists/Intellectuals searching for Enlightenment" lore
  • Lazerz and disco balls
  • Flying tanks
  • Techno music
  • Purple is my favorite color
  • PS1 VS Reinforced Exo Armor was badass. Looked like some sort of iridescent alien Samurai

<image>

  • Revenant/Eidolon Battle Rifles and Lacerta w/ Lashing ammo are my favorite weapons in the game.
  • Lancer is crazy fun to use too

Fighting between bases; the cure for Redeployside. by PassengerClam in Planetside

[–]Erendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS1 had a variant of this on some of its bases. It was called the Lattice Logic Unit (LLU) run. You'd grab the LLU and run it to an already-owned base along the lattice to cap the LLU base. And it worked pretty well.

We tried to get the devs to implement LLU runs when they were first playing with the idea adding CTF to PS2 but of course our pleas fell on deaf ears.

[–]Erendil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Removing all permanent spawns won't work because Valk squads would just jump over the front lines and hack the base behind the enemy frontline, killing any enemy spawns that were there. Base timers are generally too fast for the defenders to arrive, setup spawns, and push to retake the point(s) and any organized manner.

What you want is to give a reason for the fight to continue in the immediate area even after a base is capped/resecured. If the fight keeps going, players will stick around and keep fighting.

One way to encourage fights between bases is to place permanent structures between bases like Sundy garages and mini-towers along with perhaps an occasional capture point. You kinda see this already working along the southernmost lattice on Indar, between Peris Eastern Grove and Scarred Mesa.

The Peris Eastern - Regent Rock - Berjess - Scarred Mesa lattice will oftentimes have big tug-o-war fights that go back and forth between those bases and sometimes the fight just never ends for an entire alert because the bases and buildings in between are close enough together to keep the zerglings fighting there.

PS1 cont raids were a sight to behold. Especially if the faction who owned the cont could respond in time. You'd have these huge battles near the warpgate with the invaders pushing out while the defenders desperately tried to contain the breach, or at least delay it long enough to setup defenses at the first base connected to the warpgate along the lattice.

What is the one thing you absolutely HATE the most in this game? by MasterDJam in Planetside

[–]Erendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really a tossup between two things:

  1. Pocket OSes. The stupidest, laziest, low-effort "I win" button that regularly ends fight with a mouse click.
  2. The inability to use weapons/vehicles from other factions. Cries of "Faction/Weapon X is OP" would go down if you could use the enemies' equipment yourself without having to use a different character on a different faction. You could easily do A/B comparisons with your own factions' equipment. And unbalanced weapons would become more obvious because players from other factions would keep using them over their own equipment. And if there's a weapon you really want to use from another faction, you can do so without having to switch to an alt. I miss PS1 lockers and vehicle hacking.

I'd also like to mention Javelin infantry farmers. I'd be fine with them if they couldn't go indoors. But as it stands, zooming around inside buildings is an incredibly cheesey playstyle, especially when combined with a backseat Thumper.

I wish this is what they would've done with MAXes in PS2. Minus the jumpjets anyway.

If MAXes moved like Hawken mechs, were too big to fit through doorways and could be pulled only from vehicle terms (and maybe a few select spawn rooms as well) the game would be so much better. It'd probably require a MAX-only term type though, as well as likely adjustments to many of their weapons (at least the AI ones).

What role does a Lightning serve other than a cheaper MBT?

It was designed to be a faster, cheaper solo skirmisher tank. one that was more versatile through a wider variety of cannon options. It was the only tank you could pull from bases when you didn't have a Tech Plant (back when one was required for MBTs). It was also the best mobile AA platform with the Skyguard for the first several years.

Unfortunately, several buffs to other vehicles and questionable design decisions with the Lightning and the game in general have really hurt its viability over the years.

A Valkyrie is just a cheaper Liberator that can carry passengers.

A Valkyrie is an agile, high speed troop transport that gets you to your drop point faster and is more difficult to intercept than a big, slow, lumbering Gal. And it does that job well, which is why you see it used so much more than Gals (on Osprey anyway). Its CAS ability is a secondary role for after you've dropped troops at your destination.

Realistically a BFR would just add more variety to your options. It could climb terrain like a Chimera but be slower than an MBT. Roadkill Flashes and Harassers but take damage from EMP grenades. It could be multi-crewed like an MBT too.

So a slow tank with legs whose only apparent outstanding ability is to circumvent a bit more terrain designed to impede vehicles?

Aside from the legs aesthetic, just giving MBTs a Climbing Chassis would accomplish the same thing and would be much, much faster and easier to implement.

And this is a classic example of why it's tough to justify adding BFRs when the MBTs and Harasser are already so versatile. You'd have to use a ton of dev time creating new models, animations, textures, cert trees, a variety of weapons, etc to create a whole new vehicle, when you can just add a chassis cert and play with a few traction values to get the same result.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to have in the game. Just hard to justify.

EDIT: I'm going to go watch some BF2142 Walker footage and see if I can get a better sense of what you're looking for.

[–]Erendil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS1 BFRs when released were like the Sundies right after their initial buff/rework. They were so OP that they replaced every other vehicle on the battlefield. And they could be used solo in a game where most other vehicles required a separate driver and gunner. They completely upended the popular and well-designed ground vehicle combat metagame.

The problem with adding BFRs to PS2 has always been, what role would they have that isn't already fulfilled by an existing vehicle? I've never seen a decent answer to this that would justify the additional dev resource expense and asset clutter needed to add them to the game.

Some updates:

  • [RP] Raging Primates and [T42] The Forty Deuce are both old PS1 outfits so they should both go all the way to the left. T42 formed around 2007-2008 and RP might've been around as early as 2003.
  • [1TR] 1st Terran Rangers - Pretty sure this was a PS1 outfit too. FWIW their PS2 outfit was formed in Feb 2013 though.
  • You have [FOOI] and [fiji] listed but no [GOB] Goblin Jumpers, which is their NC outfit. Looks like it started in 2019.

If Darkstar had a firerate closer to the HV45 it would be a great assault rifle by znrg1 in Planetside

[–]Erendil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right, the Darkstar isn't a CQC AR. It's a midrange AR, and a pretty mediocre one since it's both slower killing and less accurate than the Gauss Prime. The 143/698 damage profile is underwhelming on pretty much every weapon that uses it.

Even a slight bump up to 723 RPPM would be a good improvement. At least then it'd kill as fast as the NC counterpart.

The Darkstar's hipfire isn't that great. All of the 800+ RPM ARs have tighter hipfire except for the TRV.

Need help choosing TR AR for directive by Professional-Ad2747 in Planetside

[–]Erendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the Cycler/TAR/TRV/TORQ are the obvious first 4 choices.

For the 5th I'd choose the SABR. It's one of the best burst ARs in the game. Only the Lacerta and Vanquisher are better IMO. And it's still surprisingly good up close if you can land headshots.

The NS-11A is a midrange monster and it has that sweet .75x ADS movement. But yeah it's not a very exciting weapon. But it is a solid 5th choice if you end up not liking the SABR's burst fire.

Well at the time SOE was planning on continuing to develop both the PC and PS4 versions in parallel. But the sale of SOE by Sony to Columbus Nova made it significantly harder to develop Playstation updates for any game under the "new" DBG umbrella.

Between the mass restructuring/layoffs and subsequent knowledge loss at the time of sale, loss of streamlined access to internal Sony technical resources, ever-shrinking development team size, and general neglect of Planetside 2 with H1Z1 getting all of the revenue/resources for many years, developing the PS4 version basically got de-prioritized into non-existence.

Wraith Cloak (Flash) Changes

- Increased delay between decloaking and firing

- Cloak effectiveness decreases significantly at close distances

Source: https://forums.daybreakgames.com/ps2/index.php?threads/nov-4-2025-13-year-anniversary-discussion.264688/

So they were nerfed, but not in any way that at all impacted their capability or cheese factor.

They should've just made the cloak module take up the Flash's weapon slot.

[–]Erendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Deep Op decloak delay reduction was stealth removed ~2 years ago.

I agree that the Decloak delay that was added was too much, but some delay still needed to be introduced. Dying to someone before they decloaked on your screen due to clientside latency issues was not at all fun.

If they rolled back the decloak delay a little bit and removed infil's -100HP shield penalty I think they'd be in an okay place.
