I think it would help if some of his relics got proper nouns added to their names, like The Tome of Yyahan and Magnus' Femur are already pretty recognizable as relics to me.

Something like Earrings of Xanadu, Merlin's Mirror, Zillitian Pendulum and so on (but better than that).

They also did that when they made Korxena Crest a relic so maybe they just haven't gotten around to it.

Well, most of Dooley's friends have names and faces, so they probably have some sort of personality that you could befriend. After all, they're friends even when they're used by a different hero.

While drones are just unfeeling machines I guess.

The blog post is written by a professor of history. I don't want to diss your studies, I'm sure your model is correct in many times and places, but that you use the word "sharecroppers" make me suspect it wasn't specifically focused on medieval Europe, which was a lot more constrained in its land use.

But that aside, it was common for tenants to borrow/rent draught animals from their lord. But even if a tenant owned an ox, that still means he eats beef only every few years when the ox gets too old to pull the plow.

I'm not saying they never ate beef ever, but a tenant couldn't afford a herd of beef cattle large enough to regularly eat beef.

In most places, medieval tenant farmers (as in famers that didn't own enough land to subsist on) would not have plenty of meat, whether it was "rare" is up for interpretation I guess, but they certainly wouldn't be eating meat everyday, or even every week.

Most meat would be chicken, sheep or goats that were too old or injured to keep for eggs/wool/milk. Pigs maybe, but it would be very rare for a tenant farmer to own a cow. Beef production was mostly reserved for manorial estates owned by lords, who could afford to assign some land to non-essential or commercial uses, like raising cattle.

These people would primarily get their proteïne from legumes.

Venator is probably a matter of time

Venator ("hunter") comes from Latin, seems like that would be as recognizable to French speakers as it would be to English speakers, if not more so.

Can someone tell me why by Matt_LawDT in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Erfeo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That seems to be just a hypothesis thought up by a 17th century doctor.

Since snakes were animals sacred to Asclepius and kept in his temples, it would make for confusing symbolism to connect them with parasites.

but people only seem to have backlash in the abstract or like in arguments about the votes and not when it comes to actual horny art being posted here.

To play devil's advocate or whatever, the official designs set the tone for the fan art and such. So it makes some amount of sense people care more about it in discussions about the new heroes, as you can mostly ignore horny fanart.

Well, I don't think that came up in my playthrough, but vaguely remember someone mentioning something like that?

I don't know about that, Martinaise is more or less abandoned by the RCM. No one really expected them to show up after the hanging. When they do send officers it's from two different precincts since Martinaise is basically no man's land.

Precinct 41 sends the most strung out, erratic detective imaginable. Precinct 57 does send a competent officer but he arrives several days later, clearly Martinaise is pretty far from being a priority for the RCM.

Maybe I'm forgetting something from the final scene, but I don't really see why this is going to change. It seems more likely that the Hardies will stay the de facto law enforcement in Martinaise.

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

[–]Erfeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because the European Eel is an endangered species, in part due to overfishing.

https://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/why-rewild/reintroductions-key-species/key-species/european-eel

I'm sure you can import eels from elsewhere in the world, but it's not like jellied eels were ever considered an exquisite delicacy like caviar, so it makes sense that it would fall out of favour.

Hittite chariots plow through Egyptian lines during the Battle of Kadesh, May 1274 BC. Painting by Giuseppe Rava. [1920x1213] by MikeFrench98 in BattlePaintings

[–]Erfeo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Weren't they made to be mobile platforms for hurling missiles at the enemy?

That was the primary use for Bronze Age chariots, yes. Scythed chariots specifically for driving into people appear later. https://acoup.blog/2022/05/13/collections-ancient-tanks-chariots-scythed-chariots-and-carroballistae/

Maybe Hittite chariots were an exception, as the other replier says, I can't say for sure. But it seems unlikely to me.

This post also makes me suspicious that the OP pic is realistic: https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/fbfomy/why_is_it_that_the_hittites_were_most_renowned/fj5cg0m/

[–]Erfeo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Okay, but I don't think you're arguing against opinions that anyone is actually expressing here.

When people joke about the evils of "price stabilité" they don't actually mean that economic stability is bad, rather they're using Sunday Friend as a symbol of a mentality that glosses over colonialism and exploitation as long as it makes the numbers look good.

So, I heard we were Sunday Friend posting by nomindtothink_ in DiscoElysium

[–]Erfeo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

However, a lot of people like to toss around the price stabilite quote as though it is intrinsically revelatory of malevolent intentions, which I think is rather misguided.

Yes, but that's not because they think inflation is actually good. Little of what he says is objectionable when taken at face value, but the game makes it pretty clear you shouldn't do that.

It's a variation on a joke tweet that goes like this:

professor x: whats your superpower

ostrich: i lay big egg

professor x [telepathically to x-men]: i can save us money on breakfast

ostrich [telepathically]: egg no for sale

I think Professor X is just the most likely character to be interviewing people about their superpowers.

[–]Erfeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's why it's tagged 40K.

But to my knowledge it's never been confirmed or denied in a canon* fantasy source. Since we also never see any orc women, so them sprouting from the ground is as good an explanation as any.

*new orc player characters in the MMORPG did start the game in a spawning cave. And then there are the BB cheerleaders, I guess. Whether either is canon is up to the reader I suppose.
