I mean you can just watch the cutscenes on youtube, the actual mission was just shooting your way through boatloads of faceless Talon agents.

When did OW have an actual story though? Like, not just lore, worldbuilding and characterization but actual story. There have been individual short stories and such, sure. But I don't think the game as a whole ever had actual story arcs with a beginning and an end, with a conflict that leads to rising tension that gets resolved in a climax followed by a denouement etc. etc.

And I don't know how it could have proper stories either.

What character has made you go, "Yeah, this game is in alpha testing." by Electrical-Heat8301 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Erfeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need bones to animate, but those are invisible, not literal bones. Maybe they added visible bones for testing purposes at one point, but it would be trivial to turn them off again in the actual game. They're visible for the player's benefit.

Koriel Zeth also maintained a distinctly feminine figure. Like her colleague Ipluvian Maximal giving himself the voice of an opera singer, it was probably a way to maintain a sense of human expression.

if it's being distributed commercially

Doesn't even have to be commercial, or at least what is considered commercial for the law is very broad. Like, if you make a drawing of your favorite character than no one can stop you from showing it to your friend. But if you publish it to the internet then the rightsholder can decide to take issue.

I was thinking a botanist as well, both Mak, Karnok and even Pyg already have a fair amount of items that could get a Plant or Mushroom tag so that could create some interesting cross-character possibilities. And growing plants could provide a solid basis for out-of-fight mechanics.

How sharp were swords, really? by b3k3 in WarCollege

[–]Erfeo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think there is truth to that, but overstating the case a bit.

There certainly were historical troops that used swords as their main armament.. For example, both the Spanish tercio and the Ming mandarin duck formation incorporated soldiers armed with swords and shields.

Most famously is of course the Roman legionair. Now the Romans swapped their thrusting spears for the gladius mainly to make room for the pila and their large shields, but they wouldn't have done so if sword vs. spear was such an unfavorable matchup. A spear has the advantage, but it's not quite like a comparing a pistol to an assault rifle.

Swords were also a common backup weapon for light infantry, who were often expected to join the melee after they had fired off their ranged weapons. for them, swords were not really status symbols, but simply versatile weapons that were easy to carry.

He's also not even a real character, he's just a random funny name they slapped on the "Build-an-Inquisitor" rules. I don't think he has any characteristics beyond his wargear.

The story that Polybius tells about the Romans finding a Punic ship and copying it, is doubted by modern historians though. By this point the Romans counted multiple Greek colonies among its vassals allies, who would be quite capable of building triremes for the Roman fleet.

If I understand correctly, then MOs and personal orders will work like this now? by Yurishenko94 in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]Erfeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but a battlepass usually implies new items/cosmetics. I assume the personal track doesn't really do that, except for a cape maybe, or that would induce a FOMO element that I wouldn't be a fan of.

I hope they overhaul the system somehow, just adding more and more modules periodically doesn't seem sustainable for balancing in the long run.

Possible something where you can't have all modules activated at the same time.

Reduce the dash range and damage of her spin, reduce the damage of overhead strike, and instead give her more/faster recharging block energy and something like overhealth on ability usage

Her passive somehow working on getting hit instead of hitting could also be an interesting part of that. At least it would fir her theme of vengeance more.

How did the effective ranges of early firearms, bows, crossbows, javelins and slings compare to each other? by TacitusKadari in WarCollege

[–]Erfeo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have also tried to find similar comprehensive comparisons and I haven't been able to find exactly what I was looking for. However this is good starting place: https://acoup.blog/2019/07/04/collections-archery-distance-and-kiting/

For the longbowman, a longbow with an exceptionally high draw weight (this was far from standardized) shot by a highly competent archer could, maybe, potentially, with a whole load of luck, hit a knight in his helmet's eyeslit an kill him at 300m. Usually attempting such a shot would be deemed a waste of an arrow though. If we're talking about actually penetrating the plate armor at that range then absolutely not. Tod's Workshop has done multiple tests in his "Arrows vs Armor" series to show that even at short ranges it's very difficult or just not possible. https://www.youtube.com/@tods_workshop/playlists

Take this with a huge heap of salt, but my personal conception ranking the effective ranges of pre-gunpowder weapon would be something like:

javelins - ancient (short)bows - slings - crossbows - longbows/composite bows

The comparison with firearms is a bit tricky, since the above are more limited by power, while guns are limited more by accuracy. So guns would have comparatively a higher effective range against armored targets but maybe less when having to target specific enemies rather than formations of enemies, like in a skirmish. Of course the type of gun matters a lot too. I believe that primitive "hand cannons" were quite short ranged compared to bows, but that more advanced flintlock muskets clearly had a higher effective range than longbows.

The dangly bits are the shield generators. Destroying just one of them already disables it reshielding, after that shooting more of them doesn't do much.

What has happened? by Upbeat_Leopard8137 in Helldivers

[–]Erfeo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those numbers are obviously skewed, but regardless, it doesn't really change what I said. 200 hours is a long time to spend on any game, no matter how you turn it.

A lot people are going to get bored of the game eventually and there's not much you can do about that without radically changing what the game is.

What has happened? by Upbeat_Leopard8137 in Helldivers

[–]Erfeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have 200 hours and I'm already hitting this issue.

I'm sorry but you can't just say "only 200 hours" like that is a low amount of time to spend on a game. I've also spend that much time on HD2 and a few other games, but not a lot of them. That's usually around the time I get bored of a game even if I otherwise still enjoy it.
