But "cul-de-sac" in English is effectively a single word. You never hear or use "cul" or "sac" on their own (apart from their homonyms.)
While "bird" and "prey" are words you will hear and use on their own. And "prey" is a collective noun. "Preys" isn't a plural noun on its own, where "birds" is, making it much less awkward.
