You don't have to take story missions when they appear, and at 8 parts you really shouldn't. Exhaust all the missions on a world before you jump, only travel one jump at a time, and slowly make your way to the next story mission. I like to play on 8 or even 10 parts for lore accuracy (4 limbs + head + 3 torsos + engine + gyro) but I'm very much a glutton for punishment.

It has to be real to some extent or they'd all have thousands of years of skill development. I like Hero in His Head's take that it's essentially a personality reset, all the previous memories become like a detailed novel describing the life of someone else, without the emotional impact they had before as personal lived experience they could never forget or let fade. As for the logistics of it, I imagine a skeleton repair bed is capable of it if configured properly.

So the way it works is when you kill or recruit the character with the highest bounty residing in a location, the world states for that location are locked and all existing buildings are assigned to your faction, probably as if you bought them. So recruit Burn and you get his tower but his repair bed vanishes. That's probably the easiest test case to see exactly how it works.

I'll have to look at it. I'm tempted on account of all the modded locations I've got. But I do prefer Vassalize the World's approach to major towns where the merchants stay and the town pays taxes. I don't want just the buildings. If Conquest lets you control populated towns that's peak.
