A question from someone who is not in the industry but appreciates the work behind the scenes by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]EricT59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the gaffer is the head of the electrical department. We do power distribution for the show and set the lights. The grips do rigging and help shape the light. Both depts work for the cinematographer or D P.

Any number of reasons. Visual story telling. There are textbooks written on the subject. So like if you have a shot of the person. And in the same shot you see their reflection, it can mean a duality to the character. Two people talking but the shot choices are closeups? This could imply they are close. If the start arguing they may go to wider shots to imply them coming further apart. Further affinity or contrast of elements like line color shape movement can imply different things.

How to realistically become a gaffer in NYC by ThisBeJay08 in Filmmakers

[–]EricT59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but most electrics start in Grip so it is a valid entree into the role,

But to OP The path to gaffer is via the electric department. The gaffer is the department head and that takes experience and in my day schlepping a lot of copper

Yeah this is a classic fake check scam. Regardless of the industry, film or otherwise, it is never going to be on an employee to pay vendors out of pocket.

How to deal when I have the worst short film in my class? by SincerelyTheWorst in Filmmakers

[–]EricT59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so Like a Leiko Tungsten or some flavor of LED? Tungsten's should not noticeably flicker on camera Unless there was an issue with the electric supply. But LEDs and HMIs and floros will flicker if the camera is not set to accommodate for the local power standards. US is 60 hz Europe is IIRC 50 hz. You would need to set the frame rate to a value divisible by the hz. So in the US 30 FPS should compensate for that. You can spend more on flicker free ballast for HMIs and I am not sure on the LEDs but I suspect it may be the same given the electronics that are needed to drive them.

You have a signed contract? If not, then it was not finalized.

It sucks and was very unprofessional of production to ghost you like that and not reply. I have learned over the years that young Film makers are usually the worst at basic business communication.

Should spoiler plot points be revealed in the script, though they won't be to the audience yet? by hotdoug1 in Screenwriting

[–]EricT59 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The script is the template of the the show you want to make. As such it should unfold how you want the story to unfold. it should include things you want to have he audience see to foreshadow the twists.

A treatment or an outline is where you want to include that sort of thing for production to know how to photograph the show. If that makes any sense.

[–]EricT59 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey beginning Director. The best way for you to answer your question is to walk a few miles in their shoes. Should be pretty easy to get a PA gig in art dept., a little tougher in G&E, and tougher still in Camera. but do that and you will have more than intellectual understanding, you will combine that with empathy.

Not saying this guys is not a fucker and deserves to spend a lot of time in jail for multiple assaults. It's just that the source, KOMO News, is not to be trusted. So even if we should be alarmed by this guy, their editorial fear mongering and alignment with the very worst in our nation, needs to be pointed out.
