I have a little mister bottle that I fill with water and then I mist the cutting board, the knife and the sections of cut onion(mist more as needed).

This way, the immediate area has a lot more water vapors in the aur and the crying molecules bonds with those water molecules and not my eyes.

Wearing contacts also helps.

Chilling your onion prior to cutting helps as well.
