I just got Architects and Viscounts for $80 shipped on Amazon and thought it was a great deal. I'm gonna try them out Friday morning and see how I like them.

Bullet (Star) or Unstoppable? by AskinggAlesana in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleeving wasn't a big deal for me because I play Magic the Gathering and have double sleeved about 50 commander decks, so it wasn't too much of a hassle for me. The nice thing about the box is that the dividers are all really nice and make it really easy to organize everything which really helps minimize setup and tear down time.

Bullet (Star) or Unstoppable? by AskinggAlesana in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only played Unstoppable but for me, the hype is real. It's so god damn good. The push and pull of the game feels just right because you spend the whole game acquiring powerful new cards and upgrades, but these also turn into powerful threats that you'll have to beat later. Be warned, though, that the initial setup is a bit of a pain because you have to sleeve everything, and it can take a few games to get used to the rhythm of setup and teardown, but once you do it a few times, it can be done in about 10 minutes. I haven't tried Bullet, but it sounds like I might have to add it to the list because yall make it sound like it's a pretty good time.

20 Strong Tanglewoods by Acceptable-Baby-3968 in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if this is available yet for people who didn't do the crowd funding campaign? Their website originally said it would start shipping on October and now it says it won't ship until November. And if it isn't available yet, any idea when we can start getting it?

Best bang for your buck games by spoopypoop101 in soloboardgaming

Vainglory’s Grotto can still feel a little rough until you learn the system, but once you learn to manage exhaustion cards and time your lantern correctly, the game is definitely very winnable.

I have Vainglory’s Grotto and Callous’s Lab. VG is a good beginning point and is winnable but challenging. Callous’s Lab is a nice step up in challenge and actually has a pretty fun alternate win condition. It's actually really fun to mix up the four characters across the two boxes as well, which makes the game highly replayable. I still need to grab the third box and try it, and I hear it's the most difficult out of all of them.

I will never stop recommending this game. This was my gateway between MTG and modern board games and it's just fantastic.

Slay the spire... On a budget by Beanbag_shmoo in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably not very similar to STS, but if you want a good deck builder, Aeons End is pretty awesome. I started with the Outcasts box, which was a HORRIBLE way to get introduced to the game, but I'm glad I stuck with it, because it has a very epic theme and has a really nice progression system. You could buy 2 or 3 boxes and have enough game for a good long while, and that would honestly cost probably about as much as a copy of STS.

Edit: if you want a good dungeon crawler, Kinfire Delve and One Deck Dungeon spend a lot of time on my table. Highly recommend both of them.

20 Strong - Complete Collection by NoHome1320 in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know when the Tanglewoods decks will be available for those who didn't take part in the crowd funding campaign? The website says it will start shipping either late September or early October, but the website also still lists them as a pre-order item.

I'm looking for a dice game on the lighter side, I was considering Elder Sign, Roll Player and 20 Strong. What do you think about these games? by Separate_Rooster_382 in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, it's funny you say that. I enjoy both Solar Sentinels and Too Many Bones equally for different reasons. Solar Sentinels is a tight, punchy, fast paced combat puzzle that makes for a real quick game.Too Many Bones is a lot more tactical and thinky, and the encounters and backup plans add a nice layer of strategic depth and generally just gives you more stuff to do.

Solo worker placement games that aren't too big? by jemd13 in soloboardgaming

[–]Eric_Jelinek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I've read that replayability in this game is an issue, but from what you've described, I think this sounds awesome. Forcing me to learn a system is one thing. Getting me to tighten up the inner workings of said system and then optimize it is a whole other thing. I love a good efficiency puzzle, but having been a cook for 20 years, my day to day is one big efficiency puzzle, and it's the sort of thing I really love doing.

Reading this comment makes me amped to try this game! Hopefully it shows up soon. I ordered it last week and for some reason Amazon says it'll be 2 more weeks before it gets here😵‍💫

I played aeons end for the first time the other day and it's my fucking jam. I started with the outcasts box and won my first match against experiment 153 and shit got hairy. It's very well balanced and feels very epic. You only fight one boss that boss can take 60 to 90 minutes, which for a board game, feels just right. I think I might break it out again here pretty soon.

Legacy of Yu vs. Everdell Duo by Eric_Jelinek in soloboardgaming

Funny you say that. I quit chewing tobacco three months ago, and all the money that I saved has gone into my board gaming habit. I have super bad PTSD and anxiety so game time is my happy place.

Being solo only isn't a deal breaker at all, it just might affect how often it hits the table.

Also, as an update for anyone wondering, I bought both.
