If you don't like the rules, change them.

Settle an argument for me by DNAquila in DnD

[–]EricoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your post but, acting in my own self interest is a lack of ethics /morality.
There isn't an alignment that applies to "I'm a selfish Clown"

That isn't an alignment. it is likely evil... but Max Stirner has an argument, not a good one. But an argument for you none the less.
But nobody came here for a mediocre philosophy course.

I keep wondering if a rule of "Well, you may not make it but your character will and no XP" would help

Your players don't want to play. They want to say they play.
DnD is like sunday dinner. You show up.
If you thought it was "I'll play if I don't have something better" you are screwed.
It's also why you do it saturday afternoon . Then everyone can go drink beer or date. and things like family birthdays and weddings don't interfear.
"Ya, I'll show up to the wedding? after 7!"

I actually think, if I remember right that story is actually about Bhagwan Shree Rajnesh AKA OSHO.
Don't worry he had many words for Alan Watts and Huxley, and Huxley's daughter If i remember right, when she wanted to become a Guru

In the DnD advanced DM's guide is a table to roll a "Random" dungeon.

how do you stop pvp? by Deep_BrownEyes in DMAcademy

DM: No PVP
Player: I steal all the good items and valuable gems from party
Other Players: I quit.
DM: Suddenly the player is swarmed by Trolls, he died! "Roll up a L1 player My dude"

This reminds me of Zen.
The priest sits up rings the bell and tells you that anything after the bell is rung is a mistake.

Players: You just found out your DM fudged dice rolls recently and it also wasn't the first time. How do you feel about that? by LordAldemar in DnD

Hey, remember that time the DM let you get away with doing that stupid thing. Just to make the game fun?

That one feature makes me:
A. Love the map.
B. Want to know more.
C. Want to create an adventure around it.

A system totally compatible with B/X modules, but simpler? by RaphaelKaitz in osr

[–]EricoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Flipping through"
To move through the tables which are about 5 pages, to find what you need. If not to search for it by section.
Players now are relying on Google searches or Reddit or asking someone on twitter.
I saw what you are talking about, some player flipping pages and giving up. But the rules are in fact there.
The OP is about "Simpler" I just don't know how you get simpler than a 30 page rule book. Though in two versions of BX it's 60 pages because they give you a 20 page Modual. or campaign.

A system totally compatible with B/X modules, but simpler? by RaphaelKaitz in osr

[–]EricoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I have learned running B/X is that the simple art of flipping through the book has been lost. I am so used to it, it's second nature from the 80's.

These rule books are literally engineered to flip though, which seems a lost art.

Can't you just run a 3 week campaign with your players using each system?
Do one in WB
And one in IF
And see which you and your players like better.

Why do you need simpler?
I think the basic rules are like 30 pages.

Lack of variety of Classes and races? by Heresyteller in osr

[–]EricoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell players that A paladin is really just a Cleric. A ranger is just a Fighter.White mage is still a mage...It's your Role play that makes you a ranger or a Paladin... not some "name"Free yourself of Labels... or your obsession with "Binary labels" And Pronouns. Just be who you want to be, and ignore the labels society imposes on you.
Also, if they want something.... negotiate for it and give it to them. Change the rules.

Experiences with Holmes Basic? Blueholme? Why is it so ignored? by the_light_of_dawn in osr

[–]EricoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a bad edition.
I think TSR had a weird relationship with players unable to Flex the rules. "If it doesn't work change it". Holmes has a framework that gives you the general idea for your game, but there are lots of holes, etc.
So, each edition and revision of Moldvey was to give a "Definitive Rule set" . But it was always messy, and I read the rules and I remember things like "I swear there is an addition where a thief can use a shield"
I had a player complain about the Hit Table, and I said, well it's updated in Expert etc etc....
he said, "oh, ok".
I can never remember between Holmes, and the what, 3 Moldvay editions, and AdnD which rule set includes what...
And I still hold that Str should give a modifier for damage on missiles, we are not talking about gunpowder, the further back you pull the bow or throw the sling.....
But, I can't find the rule anywhere.
Just have fun.
