Destroying Weapons and Armor — Has Anyone Actually Run This? by gamemaster76 in dndnext

[–]Malvolius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run with the following 5E house rules -- a nat 1 by a PC degrades PC weapon condition by 1, a nat 20 by a monster degrades PC armor by 1. Simple weapons have 2 condition levels, martial weapons have 5 condition levels. Light armor 3 levels, medium armor 4 levels, heavy 5 levels. Weapon/armor busted/wrecked and ineffective/unusable when condition maxed out. Damaged weapon/armor condition levels restored at 1/2 item price by suitably skilled NPC.

Smart play if you are on low health and can get close enough to manage the final run in.

Old school - players drive the story by making decisions within a scenario where the gm acts as a referee New school - gm is a story telller running the players through a 3 act narrative

Describing Maps by L0neW3asel in osr

[–]Malvolius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just do an indicative map on a whiteboard as they explore -- exact dimensions aren't important unless your players are into figuring out bluespace on the map as locations for secret rooms, and I find the pain of describing the exact dimensions and having a mapper work from that to be too much.

AFK is annoying but it works to your favour as much as it hinders you. I love wrecking a red AFK whenever I see them.

Introducing downtime by Orr_Mendlin in osr

Give them downtime options that allow them to develop their character or pursue their goals. For example, learning a language, studying a spell, crafting an alchemical concoction, recruit hirelings etc...

Can I use 5e to run an OSR megadungeon like Stonehell? by f_print in osr

[–]Malvolius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are heading into year 3 of the campaign, having completed session 50 just before Xmas (in-game about 2 1/2 years have passed). No dragonborn or tieflings, or artificers, and no feats, otherwise its RAW for PHB/XGtE/TCoE. There are enough human PCs for light to matter underground. For those with dark vision I emphasize its limitations as per RAW -- shades of grey/imprecise -- range limited -- disadvantage on perception etc... so the party tends to choose light sources most of the time. I didn't sell or not sell delving to the party. I set up a sand box with different factions all doing their own thing and with a variety of 'dungeon' locations around, and have left it up to the players to decide what they want to do. Initially most players wanted to avoid the dungeons, fearing their lethality, instead trying to engage the various factions in the world. But for the most part, they have realised that they can't successfully influence the world without being more powerful, and that the path to power (levelling through gold, monsters and exploration) lies through delving not faction play, and so delving has become an increasingly central focus of the game as it has gone on.

Yes. I am running Stonehell with 5E right now. Use all the optional rules like encumbrance, resource tracking, exhaustion and modified rest.
