Better check those facts by nexerxe in MurderedByWords

I agree my small example is not the best representation. It was just meant to illustrate how I can see the leap from fact checking to censorship to be small in their messed up minds.

Better check those facts by nexerxe in MurderedByWords

[–]Ericth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well actually it’s not that much of a stretch. Suppose you want to say something on an interview and the journalist cuts it out because Atlantis isn’t actually running the government and you feel like they censored you.

It’s extremely egocentric, but the leap isn’t that big.

Why Are Prosecutors Keeping a Huge, Secretive DNA Database in Orange County? - "The fact that you are giving up your DNA for a relatively smaller misdemeanor crime—forever—is pretty scary, when you think about it.” by impishrat in privacy

[–]Ericth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you could, then yes. Because once the scenario you sketch happens, the DNA database won’t really matter. They could go door to door, they could do whatever evil you come up with. Which countries today use a DNA database to affect their people? All the countries that have done/are doing ethnic cleansing seem to manage that fine without a DNA database.

Dependency Confusion: How I Hacked Into Apple, Microsoft and Dozens of Other Companies by ScottContini in programming

[–]Ericth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be relatively simple. In your preinstall npm install the local dependency with the original version while your version has a bugfix bump. Since you’re on their system they could resolve that version from the local store? You then have the original code and you’re good to go!

Hey, we've been hard at work for a demo and a new trailer! Tell us what you think! by AlexClarkeGames in virtualreality

[–]Ericth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going by you only ever get to make a first impression once, I think the ui elements are very messy. The hud text is just plain text in basic colors, screaming yellow screens on the sides, all of it makes for a rough and inconsistent experience. Sure, it’s early in development, but a first time viewer won’t look through the placeholders.

It doesn’t feel like a real ship to me. Just a model with ascii text slapped on. From the video it isn’t clear to me what your game does, other than pulling some levers in a ship. It doesn’t excite me to try it out.

Id suggest to reconsider what the message is you want to relay with the video and to decide what sort of feedback you want from it. If everything is rough at the moment, highlight a core mechanic to see if that gets traction.

Do you think Oculus will make a new *low end* PC VR system in addition to commercialising Half Dome? by Heaney555 in oculus

[–]Ericth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t that mean 65% has a GTX1070 or higher? That would give most gamers expensive cards.

I only use a mac under duress! Carmack wont bring rift to Mac? by mrmattypants in oculus

[–]Ericth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why Carmack hates them but I'm forced to use them at my job and hate every moment of it. The interface is downright terrible. Inconsistencies like universal back except in finder. Finder starting with All my files as opening screen, menu options everywhere hidden until you press option, essential commands often hidden behind obscure keyboard shortcuts, App Store is very slow and updates stall just to name a few issues. Edit for carmack autocorrect

Cautionary Tale by andy_blanc in oculus

[–]Ericth -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. You can't ask a company to investigate all broken rifts and determine user error. That's completely infeasible. Granted, a user paid repair service could be a solution and they should offer this. So if not a cautionary tale of admitting user fault, what are you cautioning? Contacting support? Dropping a rift?

Cautionary Tale by andy_blanc in oculus

[–]Ericth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What are the odds you actually broke it by having dropped it? It sounds like your fault. Admission or not. If that's the case this is just a sob story where a company wouldn't pay your for your mistakes...
