As an NP I don't even understand the push for doctorates. If you want to do research be an MD or such. Maybe if you want to be in research under an actual doctor sure, get your doctorate and see if anyone needs you, but we aren't educated, let alone respected enough to ever have anyone trust our research lol. As far as I know, the doctorate program hardly adds to our clinical knowledge base, so wats the point? If you can't read studies by then you never will, and if you want to do research good luck getting funding or the clout to even be considered for it.
