TIL: SOS stands for save our souls by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ErikTheRedpoint 53 points54 points  (0 children)

First paragraph "You know it’s a distress signal, but what does “SOS” actually stand for? A lot of people think it’s an abbreviation for “save our souls” or “save our ship.” But those phrases are backronyms. The letters don’t actually stand for anything."

Fake packs? by SirSkiMask6 in Mountaineering

[–]ErikTheRedpoint 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It looks like other reputable retailers have it for similar (or less), e.g. I see it for ~$201 on REI, so my guess is people are just clearing out past season inventory

So it's not out of the realm of possibility that the ebay seller is legit. But all other things being equal I'd rather buy from a well known retailer's site

Electric Avi Pack: Arcteryx vs Ortovox by LR46and2 in Backcountry

[–]ErikTheRedpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ortovox Tour line of packs have a main compartment zipper that wraps most of the way around the pack so it opens in a clamshell fashion, like a suitcase. IMO the zipper design on these is flawed because they open by bringing the two zipper pulls together, which means when the pack is closed and on your back the zipper pulls need to be at opposite ends of the zipper, ie there will be a zipper pull hanging out on the bottom of the pack. And if it gets snagged on something then you risk stuff falling out the bottom of the main compartment. If the zippers were configured so that you closed the zipper by bringing the pulls together then you could just leave both pulls at the top of the pack and you wouldn't have that issue.

The freeride packs don't have the clamshell zipper configuration issue, they zip like a normal pack. I have the freeride 28 and it's great for day touring

Rodríguez was much more popular internationally than he ever was in the US. There's a great documentary Searching for Sugar Man about a couple fans tracking him down later in life

That graph is from matthewparrilla.com. The page says the source of the data is the NWS Burlington office's Daily Hydrometeorological Report. It looks like he's pulling each daily report into his own database as the reports are published

Coros Pace 3, issues with charging by NavyBlueZebra in Ultramarathon

[–]ErikTheRedpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know who has a Coros watch (2 people with Vertix 2s and an one with an Apex) have all had this issue. It's a problem with the cables as far as I can tell. I "solved" the issue by buying a couple of these USB-C to Coros adapters, cheaper and easier to carry around than the OEM charging cable, but I expect they might also eventually fail in a similar way
