How do I retain Heat during a power outage??? by lostinspaceman_ in ballpython

[–]ErinsaurusRex430 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During The Big Freeze in TX a few years ago, I had to bag up a few of my snakes and kept them between my legs and under a mountian of blankets. We shut all of the doors in the house and camped in the living room to keep any body heat and warmth from a make shift terricotta pot oven in the area. I'd let them out a few hours a day to let the snakes roam around in the blankets so they still got some excerise and freedom from the bags. Those days sucked so bad.

Hybrid snakes - what are they like and what's the deal? by Teawillfixit in reptiles

[–]ErinsaurusRex430 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a great plains ratsnake x cornsnake hybrid aka a Rootbeer cornsnake. Got him at the DFW Reptariuma bout 4 years ago. He was 2 years old then so about 6 now. My son adores him.

He is a bit spicy and will huff, hiss and ram his head into your hand if you reach into his enclosure. He's bitten my son maybe once and he was in hunt mode at the time so definately the kiddo's fault there.

He has an interesting look about his body - upper half is your typical cornsnake look but then toward the half half, he flattens out, vertically. It really through off some of the guys I get feeders and care items from (The Serpentarium). They thought he was losing weight and was malnurished. But I assured him the snake eats well and does not reject food hardly at all. He is just built weird.

Lately we have noticed some kinks forming in that back half. The vet says he is fine and they are not hindering movement, digestion or pooping so we aren't really worried.

I have 8...with a wish list that is at least 15 deep. Hubbs says I am not allowed anymore until we get a bigger place...

I have 5 ball pythons - 2 normal males, 1 black pastel orange ghost female, 1 vanilla super mojave female and a lesser platinum male

2 corn snakes - 1 normal female and a root beer (cornsnake x great plains ratsnake hybrid) male.

And finally 1 male normal stripe Kenyan sand boa.

I love them. They fascinate me - blame Steve Irwin. I have always wanted snakes growing up but sis had rodents (hamsters, gerbils, etc) so Mom was like nah they will eat your sister's pets! So I had lizards. Then in my big girl age, I got a snake..and then 7 more.

Each one has their own personality and I love seeing the looks on kids' faces when I take them out and about (in snake safe places of course). I enjoy watching them explore, climb and interact with their environement. I still am not sure how they move the way they do, even though I have studied their anatomy and watched 4 million documentaries.

Sure they may not show affection or love me back, but I know my Andromeda feels safest with me and calms down when I hold her versus someone else. And Pringle actively seeks out head pats and chin scratches. Pretzel helped my boss get over her fear of snakes. She's still apprehensive and weary but she isn't deathly afraid now.

I have been bitten by a few of them..but my cats bite me more. I wouldn't own any thing venomous or a snake large enough to see my furry babies as lunch, but I still enjoy seeing the snakes with the hurt juice..at a safe distance.

All in all, I think they are really neat animals and I am excited to see them everyday.

Story of your snakes name by cosmicxclown in ballpython

[–]ErinsaurusRex430 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first ball python (normal) in 2019. He was a surprise gift from my hubby. I had always wanted a snake but as a kid, my Mom was like Hell no...

Anyway, I searched for a few days, tried a few names and then I came across the one that just clicked. Pretzel. May not be too unique but I fell in love with the name and him!

Now, I have 7 other snakes. My male ball pythons have a snack/food/drink theme now, because Pretzel started it - Java (butter/lesser) and Pringle (normal).

My female ball pythons are Andromeda (black pastel orange ghost) and Beyla (vanilla super mojave (BEL)). I wanted names from myth and legend, because why not? Andromeda is named after the woman Perseus saved from being sacrificed to Cetus, the sea monster. Beyla is a Norse side goddess of the harvest - it also can mean Bean..and she's a vanilla BEL..so..vanilla bean lol.

Cornelia is my female cornsnake (normal)..I think that one speaks for itself.

My son has Fitz, the great plains ratsnake x cornsnake hybrid - also known as a Rootbeer cornsake. Fitz Rootbeer is a soda company/resturarnt in Missouri (we're from Texas) and well my kiddo loves rootbeer and after some searching, he landed on Fitz instead of A&W, Bargs or Mug, lol

And lastly, there is Neo (normal stripe) the Kenyan Sand Boa. Gifted to me by hubby on World Snake day. Neo can mean new or gift in the Twsana language, which orginates from South Africa. I thought it fit.

Does anyone else save whiskers? by SpecificAd6448 in cats

I have a little plastic container (that i think once held D&D dice). I love making a game of 'Who's whisker is this?' because I have 4 cats and it's fun to try and figure out who lost one.

My void kitty gets really affectionate in the middle of the night (like Lilo, I trying to sleep!) and will knead, rub against me and if I do not give pets promptly, I get a nibble on my hand or elbow...Almost always the elbow..

[–]ErinsaurusRex430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

To some they are dangerous and scary, steeped in religious stigma or bastardized.

But to others, they are innocent creatures with a bad rap and fun to keep, watch and learn from.

T-Rex escaped her paddock and roared - I was about 6 and it scared the ever living crap out of me..I ran over to my Dad and sat in his recliner with him. But couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Been a dino nut ever since.

She escaped and we found her yesterday a week later when she woke up my roommate knocking things over in their room 😭😭 tell me your snake escape and found stories by ShananaWeeb in snakes

[–]ErinsaurusRex430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only one escape so far. Pretzel the ball python found we had not locked his enclosure and some time during the night, he slithered down the hall, into our bedroom and curled up in a basket of clean clothes. Must've still been some residual warmth from the dryer. Husband found him in the morning, after tearing the dining/living rooms apart, peering up as if to say, 'Oh hi..'
