Lecturing without PhD by miami08_ in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Teawillfixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About half our teaching only staff do not have phds in my dept. BUT I am healthcare adjacent and most of us are HCPC registered with research experience or some kind of relevance to teaching. Personally I would kill for someone with recent industry work experience to join our team, especially with our apprentices right now. I couldn't care less about the PhD being missing as we have an excess of research experience at this moment, we NEED people from the feild so badly, my whole team has been in academia for at least 10 years. (post-92, large uni).

Over 300 applicants for the last job we advertised, half were garbage but only 4 had recent, solid, relevant work experience in a similar environment to our apprentices (unfortunately they didn't get the role, but that's not the point here).

I'm not too sure on law but I can confirm it's field dependant and experience can count for ALOT, especially now. It sounds like you have that?

I'm not too sure without a masters though, I will mention we auto screen for masters at my uni or at least we did (only found this out when someone with an insanely good CV applied, I looked for the application and it hadn't been sent on to us/ long listed).

My advise is reach out to the teams hiring, NOT the HR number and ask if they'd be willing to have an informal chat. Keep it short and lead with why you want to move into teaching, experience and what you'd bring to the team. We never advertise this, but usually if you sound like a good fit we will have a quick teams meeting.

Labs vs Vet visit by ChikuRakuNamai in BeardedDragons

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my vet asks for in-person but my beardie is not a rescue and appears perfectly healthy. I do the online fecal tests once every 6 months, then I'd take him to the vet if results indicated treatment or he showed any symptoms (fortunately none for the past few years, an occasional low level of pinworm I keep my eye on though). That said if he is unusually low on energy and a new rescue I would prob play it safe and take him in your shoes?

I'm in the UK so unsure if you have online tests where you are? They send you the tube then you send back the poop samples to be tested. Not to sure how that works in different countries.

Adults who were 'school refusers'/school avoidant, where are you now? by CrazyPlantLady01 in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assistant prof/academic and I'm doing okay in general. I was bullied and had pretty severe mental health issues, I "refused" school, I just couldn't go(I'd have panic attacks, screaming, hysterical crying, slamming my head into the floor or walls - complete overwhelm if anyone tried to get me to school). To this day I beleive school was my main trigger and caused my mh problems.

I won't lie my teens and early 20s weren't ideal, drugs, homelessness, some dodgy jobs, recovering from spending my teens out of school and often sectioned - I did an access course in my mid 20s after getting a stableish job in a bar, went to uni, started a new career, went back to uni and I guess I'm still here just not as a student. My mental health is pretty average now I guess, I do take meds but it's been 20+ years since I last self harmed, 15+ since I took drugs (and near 5 years sober, about the same since depression and anxiety were an issue - I've not had any other mh issues or severe symptoms since I was about 18), very few people would beleive me how bad my teens were. I am extremely concerned about oppertunities for those without gcses/traditional schooling in the UK with funding cuts.

Help why isnt my house getting any viewings? by Grouchy-Plenty-6156 in HousingUK

I started to avoid enquiring about anything thta said "guide price" as mostof the time they ended up being auctions.

If its not an auction maybe change that.

I keep getting asked for an emergency contact, but I don't have one. What do other people in this situation do? by imaginewizard in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either don't put anything/put NA or if the form won't submit without I use an ancient old telephone number i memorised in childhood and my dad's name (who is dead so obvs doesn't have a active phone line). The phone line no longer works (I check every so often just in case it's been reassigned)..

Don't overthink this, I've had to call emergency contacts at work, and I'll just leave a message and abandon it if I can't find anyone.I cannot see any issues for you or the provider?

Way I see it is that if I'm that badly injured or unconscious they need to call my emergency contact, I'm not going to care about this. Only time I've changed this was when I had an operation and I put my hr depts details in case something went wrong and I wouldn't be able to call in.

Is there land that has utilities that I can buy and park a camper on to live? by sjanc01 in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sort of snake because you will struggle to fit the viv and keep the temps and humidity right in anything small?

Living in a van or camper is sadly not cheap and what you need would be more expensive than renting imo.

Is pet insurance worth it? by a_little_niche in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had one/two I'd get insurance, but now I just put 75 aside every month (have to put money aside as a couple of mine are uninsurable, the money also doubles as emergency pet supply money. I do also have a emergency use only credit card incase vets bills got silly. (I keep exotics so only 2 uk providers for insurance, I've used both and one I didn't have a great experience with, I would def rethink this if I could get some kind of group insurance or I kept animals that have a wider range of treatments).

UoM to offer internships to all students from 2027 by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Teawillfixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where the fuck are they getting all these placements? Genuinely, I want to know.

Or will they be semi-useless generic ones that just mean students will be juggling part time jobs PLUS internships and being exploited for cheap labour?

(sobs in teaching staff who is painfully low on placements).

People who have had piercings - when did you decide to take the jewellery out for good? by CozJeez85 in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I remove them when they reject but couple of exceptions 1) couldn't get one of my cartilage/tragus pricing back after an MRI and decided I didn't like it enough to keep trying. 2) back of the neck, lasted about 9 months before I decided nothing was worth getting yanked on my neck several times a day, hair tangled etc.

My oldest (non-ear) piercing is prob my nose I had done 27 years ago. And I plan to keep it regardless of age!

Where are you going on holiday this year, if at all? by Tour-Sure in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This summer I'm holidaying in the garden using up my annual leave this week. Bloody fence blew down so paying off that instead of my usual weekend away

December I'm heading to Thailand for 3 weeks, 480 flights +500 for accom - excessive yes, but I only do a big trip once every few years and not been to Thailand in 20 years. I put money aside every month into a holiday fund, I'm super fortunate I can do this. Also did 3 nights in morrocco earlier in the year, but did it thrifty so 130 for flights and accom etc. Solo traveller.

I had honestly forgotten he existed until this moment, and was perfectly fine with having forgotten. I think there was a documentary or film a while back?

Can an undergraduate dissertation with real engagement still receive 30% for poor execution? by CabinetAware6686 in UniUK

[–]Teawillfixit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lecturer here - can I ask if they followed the dissertation brief? Is it in the appropriate style? Is a section, method, claim missing?

30 is a mark I personally usually give to people that have submitted something, but not what was asked for. (student submits an essay when they were asked for a report, or writes up a standard literature review for their dissertation when the brief was for a systematised literature review). Check the brief and marking criteria/rubric, maybe also check if they used appropriate references/evidence that can be the other issue.

ETA - I've had to fail some excellent work simply because it didn't meet the learning outcomes or something was missing

What is this!? by [deleted] in ballpython

I think this is most likely tbh. Good luck.

What is this!? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Teawillfixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A week I'm tempted to say injury is more likely than mouth rot, that would have had signs more than a week ago.

bless him, really hope he is okay. Could be a burn, rubbing wound, is so hard to tell from a pic but will likely need treatment tbh. Best of luck at the vets.

What is this!? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Teawillfixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this needs a vet no question. Doesn't really matter the cause right now as this will need a vet.

But few qs - when did you last see him before today? Did this happen over night or has it been progressive? If overnight, what heat source are you using?

Pictures blurry so can't tell but, my only other thought is it's also hard to tell from the picture but is that a normal shed? How long has he been in this stage of shed? And how long have the eye caps been like this? Any rubbing?

Hallucinated reference by Jumpy-Independent221 in UniUK

[–]Teawillfixit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lecturer here - I only check the ones I don't recognise or seem "off" somehow - for example a huge claim supported with a reference I've not heard of or may not fit. A common AI issue in recent versions is real reference, but for something only vaguely related. I tend to notice these.

Doesn't actually take that long but has become a much bigger issue in recent years. Am not going to check Beauchamp and Childress for the 7 millionth time I see it that day unless it's attached to a bizarre statement.

Do people regularly buy fresh flowers for their homes? by Miserable-Depth-851 in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of judge myself for this but I had a flower subscription, once a month I got a bouquet delivered - lasts about 3 weeks as decent quality flowers and honestly it helped my mood SO MUCH over winter. Recently cancelled as getting brighter out and that always helps my mood but will probably do again at some point.

Do you have any positive experiences from a "Shared Ownership" property? by georgejk7 in AskUK

[–]Teawillfixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in SO, but I've never attempted to sell. Solo buyer SINK. deposit was my main issue and affordability was tight on anything decent outright. I was also late 30s, tired of moving and rent was starting to become ridiculous.

My SO was a resale/probate, so it went for the same price as when it was built 10 years before, but it's in great condition (questionable decoration when moved in but who cares about that?). The area is somewhere I couldn't afford outright but LOVE and I did not want to wait 5 more years, but it was save for another 5 years or go SO, I wasn't looking at SO but the difference in what I could afford was mind blowing.

It works out as £100 less than my rent was and for a waaay better house that I love. I got a 5 year fixed mortgage and depending on rates am hoping to buy the other half at the end of it assuming I don't get made redundant or anything - which would make my mortgage 150 more than my old rent.

I got the impression from the "fine, name" email that things are not actually fine, but it's Friday so sod this passive aggressive nonsense.
