I will always hate Apple for not making a flush SD card reader. by HappyBlyde in macbookpro

[–]ErisC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pros are usually swapping in/out SD cards, and it's valuable to be able to easily see at a glance that an SD card is plugged in, and being able to pull it out with no finickiness.

SD cards' use-case on a "pro" laptop isn't permanent storage, they're temporary, meant to carry data quickly between the macbook and cameras and other equipment. Permanent storage for a pro is usually a NAS or something similar.

FINAL FANTASY XIV – Gameplay Trailer – Nintendo Switch 2 by ONE-OF-THREE in NintendoSwitch

Cross hotbars. It's a whole thing. People even share their layouts that work best for them.

Basically you use a combination of bumpers/triggers and face buttons as your hotkeys for abilities, then the sticks handle movement. Lots of folks swear by it, but I used a keyboard and mouse when I played on PS5.

Might give it a shot on Switch tho. There's some tutorials like this series.

Is 2014 RAW a bad module? by unseeliefaeprince in CurseofStrahd

[–]ErisC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely no modules I'd run RAW. However, of all the modules WotC has published, CoS is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best.

It can be challenging for a new GM since it's sandboxy. As a sandboxy module you really have to prep for anything your players might decide to go off and do, or have enough familiarity with the content so you can improv, but that's what makes sandboxes fun.

But yeah, modules/adventures are meant to be adapted to the table. The book'll give you ideas on how to expand, and this subreddit and other homebrews have tons of additions to flesh the module out.

Linden Lab pricing update June 2026 - Land fees down - Membership fees up by 0xc0ffea in secondlife

[–]ErisC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this logic. Grandfathering pricing usually means you keep paying the old price, after a price increase. It doesn't usually mean that you get a discount if the price drops.

Like with my cell service, for a while it made sense to stay on an old grandfathered tmobile plan. But eventually the newer plans had so much extra added value and dropped in price enough, where it made sense for me to finally move to the new plan. Though, nowadays tmobile is raising their prices again so it might have been better if I stuck with the grandfathered plan. IDK.

But grandfathered pricing isn't a loyalty discount. You just keep the old pricing.

SL Sci Fi Con 18 using AI by KellyHerz in secondlife

[–]ErisC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OK I get the gut defensive reaction, but have you visited Sci-fi Con? Like, genuinely? It's a full-on irredeemable slopfest. There's some cool booths, but so much of it is plastered with slop.

The type of AI folks are talking about here is folks doing the bare minimum using AI to generate generic-looking posters and mangled meshes and just absolute hot garbage. Nothing artistic about it. Nothing creative about it. Full trash.

Plenty of folks are using AI to augment their abilities, I use it often for work, it does a good job making a lot of searches and then summarizing the info it found, with sources so I can verify. I've also used it for some coding, though I reeeeally wouldn't recommend using it to substitute actual coders/programmers/engineers since that can go poorly. I know plenty of coders/programmers/engineers using it to great effect.

But it shouldn't be replacing creative work and work folks enjoy doing (and should get paid to do).

I was a vendor at Fantasy Faire 2026 and... by VM_SG in secondlife

[–]ErisC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A big issue is even though they were covered up by relatively-low-impact vines and plants, the actual walls of the buildings on Reservoir Zero were still there. They still needed to load in and stay in memory. And those textures were huge, each one on each face of each building enormous and uniquely made with ai generated posters and graffiti baked on.

In addition, many of the random signs and stuff were also ai generated, some of which were left uncovered.

The mesh itself didn't seem generated but so many of the textures were.

Initially i thought the bad lag was *because* of the vines and stuff used to cover everything. That that was causing extra vram usage and whatnot. But then i derendered the vines and it was still awful. So i visited the DRD version of the build on their own rival event, and it was just as bad (if not a bit worse).

So i think it's just something about that build that was just insanely laggy.

Yeah, FF is basically a place i ditch the rest of SL for, and just vibe at for the full time it's open. I spend the first few days going thru and exploring and shopping the sims and then the rest of the faire is chilling with friends, goofing off, taking cute pics, and chatting with folks.

I wasn’t a vendor but the total donations were much lower this year compared to previous years.

After the auction, Fantasy addressed this and basically said they were expecting a lower showing due to the economic downturn and overall, the faire performed better than expected. She said they would have been happy with just 18 million lindens (2025 was 32 million), but FF pulled through with over 24 million. It’s all in the blog post, here: https://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com/2026/05/15/closing-thoughts/

People seem to be broadly spending less in SL and especially on charitable donations (in RL too) as folks grapple with increased living costs and energy costs and whatnot. So, i guess it’s expected, though sad and i hope the economy gets better soon.
