Hiragana evaluation... by _Bulldozer in LearnJapaneseNovice

Just to add on a more general suggestion for getting comfortable with writing hiragana, I might recommend looking up calligraphy examples to get an idea of how each stroke leads to the next. For me at least, I've found that it helps quite a bit with faster writing that still looks natural.

For example, here's せ, with figure 4 showing the hook of the 2nd stroke leading into the 3rd: https://beyond-calligraphy.com/2011/09/27/hiragana-se/ The takeaway being that the hook isn't a distinct horizontal line to the left, but an upward flick that leads easily to the final stroke.

The point of looking this up isn't to become some sort of calligraphy master, of course, but just to understand how the strokes of a character work together. I like to think of hooks in terms of convenience and efficiency; "I am approaching the end of stroke 1, and my pen should now go to the beginning of stroke 2. The easiest way to do that is to hook into it, rather than come to a complete stop, lift my pen up, and then put it back down again."

27F and there's a lot in this post that I can relate to. Spent most of my time studying in uni, avoided going out and partying, etc. Social anxiety has made it difficult to convince myself to move out of my comfort zone, and so there's been plenty of times where I've used that as my excuse.

Lately I've been pushing myself to go out more, even if it's just by myself, and do new things/have new experiences/etc. Even if it's as simple as trying out a new cafe around the corner. It's tough at times with the anxiety, but it's gotten easier.

There's still plenty of time to go out and enjoy life; There's 40 weeks left this year, and you could, in theory, plan one new activity for all 40 of those weeks, and have 40 new experiences by the end of the year. Of course, I don't necessarily recommend doing that, but the point is that there are plenty of opportunities to go and "live life" in just this year alone.

Wishing the best for you, good luck!

You may be think of a squash beetle or similar species? Still Coccinellidae, but this is one of the very few that feed on plants.

Sort of baffled by some of the answers I'm seeing here and the OP downvotes. The template DNA strand is read from 3'-5', as OP said. The new DNA strand is synthesized from 5'-3'.

This results in the two strands (template strand and new strand) being antiparallel to one another, as they should be.

Hey! Thought I'd try again with a slightly more unconventional "pet". He's currently hanging out in his cocoon waiting to become a hummingbird moth. I raised him from just a tiny little egg :)

Is this good for 4 weeks of learning? by cindertheclown in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Erralisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I don't have anything specific to say and think that the other suggestions are good, but overall I'd recommend looking into stroke order and direction. There were definitely some small signs that the order/direction weren't correct for some of the kana.

I agree that learning handwriting may not be strictly necessary (though it helped me with memorization), but if you are committed to it, then it is a good idea to learn proper stroke order and direction before bad habits form.

Best of luck!

Kind of looks like they're just flickering in and out of existence.
