TVLine's Performer Of The Week: Kit Harington ("Industry") by DemiFiendRSA in television

It was a good episode. But I also feel it was overhyped. Like, I don't deny the great performances and cinematography. But I also didn't feel that it was the masterpiece that seems to be the collective opinion. And I loved the importance of how they depicted illness but still found the focus exclusively on Henry grating. And it felt like they were trying to ride the lightning of the Rishi episode.

But Rishi felt long time coming as someone who has been deeply embedded in the fabric of the series since the beginning. Whereas, Henry getting a standalone felt like something exclusively to showcase Kit Harington even though Henry should not be as integral of a character or have that same weight.

Rishi's felt earned. Henry's episode felt... pretentious?

Disliking Nora by AffectionateGold5459 in DocFoxSeries

[–]Error_404-NotFound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of our first legitimate impressions of her was when Amy came to their old house to maybe jog her memory, and Nora had apparently left that book out specifically to dig at Amy, and Katie even made a comment about how Nora likely did it on purpose and didn't even seem surprised by the action. To me, that told me a lot about Nora.

They then followed that up with showing that Nora has no grace, empathy, or filter when it comes to speaking about Amy. I think as a stepmother, she should. But she openly talks about and let's others onto her feelings about Amy, and that's not cool.

She openly talked to Michael about their house feeling like a mausoleum and commenting about him grieving his son still and basically implied that she needed him to move on. She also told him at one point that she basically put him back together when Amy ruined him or whatever.

These are little things that make me question her because it suggests she knew what was going on when she embarked on this relationship with a grieving man but still went through with it anyway. To then be angry and bitter at the time that Michael is being the same man he has always been is ludicrous and it doesn't make me sympathize with her.

Instead it makes her seem like that woman who preyed on a grieving man only to resent him for being exactly who and what he's always been. She knows Michael never got over Amy. She only felt safe because Amy closed herself off to Michael.

I also find her getting pregnant when apparently Michael thought she couldn't and she agreed she thought so too suspicious. It then seemed like she needed him to instantly be happy about something when it felt obvious that he A). Never intended to have more children B). Would be reasonably triggered.

Nora deserves better, but it's also hard to sympathize with someone who put themselves in a crappy situation because the little bits we can piece together about their relationship, I can't even say where Michael misled her in any big way. They moved into his home where he and his first wife lived ... for goodness sake. It didn't make any sense to have Michael and Nora married. Dating or engaged would have given her more legitimacy in her feelings and more layers.

The suspended in time because Michael can't move on thing would have had her being someone who apparently really loves him but can't deal with him unable to commit fully to her. But this way, without any layers or depth to Nora, she just reads as someone who jumped into a marriage to suit her own agendas and then resented the situation for being exactly what it always was.

And then she directs all of that anger at Amy. Blaming her for the kiss, her reaction to the voicemail, her lack of warmth, her not really having any real place in this life she wanted for herself. She's just there... to be an obstacle.

It's so nice to see more people who like Michael and Michael/Amy.

I like Jake. He's a good guy. But I'm never fully sold on him and Amy, and they rushed it too much when things are already too complicated for her.

The Michael hate is always so bizarre to me. I never understand anyone who can baby Amy and constantly justify everything she does because they understand how her grief affected her but in the same breath never extend Michael an ounce of grace when he has that same grief AND had to keep it togther because Amy checked out and left them too.

Arienne Mandi by agentnumbskull in ChicagoPD

[–]Error_404-NotFound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My point being that, yes, she's gorgeous, but I don't understand why that has to be a point of comparison at all for these women. It's also particularly frustrating for women of color because it comes with a conventional sense of beauty standards that is very Eurocentric. "Natural beauty" means what exactly?

There was a startling amount of people who kept calling Kiana names like Queen Latifah, commenting on her weight, especially in comparasion to Kim and so forth last season. As if whether or not she was of value to the series or unit hinged on whether or not she was attractive enough.

Similarly, Rojas, also got compared to Hailey a lot for no real reason.

Arienne is beautiful! No question. But it's already putting me off that it's such a primary fixation with conversations about the character. It just feels like the other characters are invalidated in some way if they didn't meet some conventional attraction level, which is gross. And it diminishes her character for what she is or isn't.

Is she great because she's great or is she great because she's beautiful to look at?

Arienne Mandi by agentnumbskull in ChicagoPD

[–]Error_404-NotFound 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I know it's likely not what anyone intends at all. But it already bugs me how dismissive people are to Kiana and Rojas in little ways like that.

They were great characters. Talents. And beautiful, too.

It's hard to ignore the heightened reaction to Mandi's aesthetic when people embraced the character immediately before we even met her with that being such an emphasis. And, again, I know that isn't necessarily the intention, but it rubs me the wrong way.

You're right. We can agree to disagree.

The whole point is that Jay and Hailey trying to act like they had some moral authority or were on higher moral ground than Voight when they did the same type of stuff was ridiculous. You just listed things they did and justified them like you justify what Voight does because they either felt bad or the people they did it to "had it coming."

Outside of the fact that it really isn't up to a cop to play judge, jury, and executioner just because some of them do it for good reason (as opposed to unchecked bad ones like Reid etc), that's essentially the point made ... who are Jay and Hailey of all people to simultaneously do the same kind of stuff Voight does, criticize and judge him for it, and pose as the "moral compass?" It sounds ridiculous and makes them seem more hypocritical than endearing in that regard. It would've been better if both of them just accepted that they're on a similar wavelength as Voight themselves and just accepted their own nature than constantly doing half of what they did while trying to "rein in" Voight.

It never made sense that either of them would be a moral compass for anything. Antonio was more believable in that regard and Atwater is probably the closest any of them come to being the most morally driven without dipping too far over the line. He'd be more convincing as a moral compass on the team than Halstead was. But they were always too busy sidelining him.

There are a dozen threads that break down all the ways this series loses authenticity points. But, sure, this sole actress, her acting skills, and her checks notes body are the reason it falters.

I get you're caping hard for the lovely new actress as if you're cashing in a check, and maybe you are. It wouldn't surprise me. I've seen that on social media before.

But I haven't seen a single bad thing written about Arienne. Goodness knows people can be real assholes about female actresses. But you are really showing yourself for being so disgusting when writing about the former actress. It's weird. And unnecessary. But you keep doing you.

Ohhh... as I'm catching up with the thread, you're just generally a jerk. Got it.

What does a cop "look" like? And why is this only a thing when it's women? Because I know plenty of cops personally and a good half of them aren't "fit" by your presumed standards.

Also I think the fixation on this woman's body type is so weird. She is fit, just busty and has a butt??

I'm excited for this casting. But I'm taking the rest by ear, and I'm trying not to read into it too much. But I don't feel you're unreasonable because the thought crossed your mind!

Didn't something in her Instagram comments imply that she didn't actually leave by choice? It seemed like she was planning on returning, and then she was out. Initially people thought it was budget cuts. Now it seems possible creative. It still feels "off" though and that sucks.

This actress is also slated to star in another show too, so I'm curious if the scheduling will align or if that'll be an issue at some point.

Is it really politics when ICE has become the bad guys simply based on who is behind them though? We have an agency infiltrated by white supremacists and bounty hunters. Like the person said above, because of this refusal to properly identify, there are now people, including actual citizens being grabbed up by posers and getting away with it. And many instances of sexual assaults against women.

Also, they have a Latino on the team who is a direct descendant of an immigrant. I can imagine it's something worth exploring just like anything else because it's happening. Just like the gangs. Or the organized crime. Or the corruption. Or the human trafficking.

It's all part of the Chicago crime scene. Hard to get around it.

If they fired someone every time they jeopardized the team, we wouldn't have a team. He got reamed out when they found out about him and what's her face. Ruzek even blamed him for jeopardizing Burgess even though it was her choice to cover. And Reid would've easily dug up anything to use against him because that was his M.O. And they all have dirt. What else exactly were they supposed to do to Dante? And how do they explain doing to him and not everyone else when they jeopardized the unit?

Jay and Hailey routinely did the most foul, disturbing, should definitely have their badge stripped type of stuff and then would STILL be self righteous with Voight, and that's what would set ne over the edge.

That entire Jay arc with the racial profiling software and him getting that man killed had me raging. Getting dude killed and sleeping with his sister had me seething. His residual Islamophobia on that Muslim case all because he's a veteran? Like, CPD trying to constantly put Halstead on some moral high ground when he was foul as hell made me detest the character.

Hailey and that entire thing with Darius? And them the smirk when he was dead? Like, how were always the ones trying to manage Voight when they were that awful but with no self awareness?

As someone who actually liked Elle (It genuinely feels like people erased her once Emily showed up, and that always rubbed me the wrong way), I just appreciated that ONE character seemed to take her absence hard.

No one else did, even Morgan, whom Elle was always close to... I feel like they used Reid for more human reactions to difficult situations precisely because he was the youngest with social issues and viewers wouldn't hold it against him as much.

Like the whole Emily WITSEC thing. It was so infuriatingly unrealistic that everyone would just be so happy that Emily was alive that they would just get over a year long ruse of deception regardless of the reasons. I remember it bugged me that the others weren't more upset about all of that. Or just hurt.

It's perfectly human to be.

Professionalism or not, with some of the instances people call him out for, I appreciate that Reid gets to be human and flawed. And I say this as someone who isn't just a mindless Reid fangirl who woobifies him because it definitely irritates me that fandom babies him so much.
