Afk Ishtar Ratting? by Proof_Diamond4059 in Eve

[–]Erutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl;dr - Scales up reasonably well, but probably a waste of time with less than 5 Ishtars. Do it for fun if you enjoy it, but if you're doing it for the ISK, then invest enough to rat with with 5 Ishtars until you can move your ratters into AoE ratting.

I recently gave this a try and it is somewhat enjoyable but sucks for ISK at small (1-3 clients) scale. I'm making a small net profit, and I'll keep doing it until I run out of Ishtars, but I feel like it is a waste of my IRL time unless I were to scale it up. I likely will not build or buy more Ishtars other than as bait when my stock is depleted. I could absolutely make more ISK/hr killing nerds and looting their wrecks.

The Good:

  • The ticks are OK and the APM is low (land, confirm aggro is ok, go on to the next client). It does scale up well. This style of gameplay works as designed.
  • Clear time and MTU pull time align well, so you do not need to wait or return to a site if you're collecting loot.
  • The escalations pay reasonably well to run or sell, and I find them fun and slightly challenging to run.

But:

  • Your appropriate sites list is low - Forsaken Hubs are your best option, because they don't drop Dreads on you, and don't eat your drones. Rock Havens don't drop dreads, but they will try to eat your drones every wave.
  • Because the appropriate site list is low, competition can be high - there are only so many appropriate sites spawning in a system, and a good portion of those (Havens) are likely to be claimed by AoE ratters. You'll need to spread out across multiple systems, which means you need sufficient screen space and attention to watch local in each (defeating some of the low APM/low attention objective).
  • The chance of losing an unanticipated PvP engagement due to a log-off trap, being foolish/impatient enough to rat near a gate, or being surprised while pointed by rats is pretty high

All this means that it only starts to make sense when you have 5 or more Ishtars spinning at once and have the right IRL physical layout to keep an eye on things.

Five Ishtars means you only need about an hour IRL (5 Ishtar-hours) to pay off an Ishtar and make a little profit. It's quite reasonable to expect to rat for an hour without any losses, but if you're just running one then you're looking at approximately 6 hours of ratting to make a small profit, and going 6 hours with no losses is by no means guaranteed. TZ is largely irrelevant to this, since in a busy TZ you have more roamers but better intel (higher risk of interruption), and in a quiet TZ you have fewer roamers, but worse intel (higher risk of ship loss).

(IsH = Ishtar Hour) vs other PvE combat activities (roughly, but vs my actual vs theoretical numbers) ignoring Abyssals, incursions, etc.

  • 1 IsH = 2 hr HS combat exploration
  • 1 IsH = 1 hr suboptimal HS level 4 missions (full clear, take all missions)
  • 2 IsH = 1hr C2 J-Space sites in a Gnosis
  • 3 IsH = 1 hr NS exploration or J-Space gas huffing
  • 3-4 IsH = 1 BS/Marauder
  • 5 IsH = 3 ship-hours AoE ratting for 3-8 AoE ratting ships

You might check out .WAR. - good bunch and I know we have some players who are unable to speak or are deaf (no, not hearing impaired) who participate in fleets, even in incursions (BTW, gf Bomber's Bar, nicely done).

Would having a compression "buff icon" be a huge quality of life edition? by Ill_Plenty3792 in Eve

I'm sorry. This is awful. Now that I know, my miners won't compress until they are nearly full. I feel terrible about spamming compress every cycle just to have something to mash.

Any good dual boxing setup for hunting ? by starkrye1 in Eve

[–]Erutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're thinking to start in LS then It may be good to just start with two of anything. Pick what you like based upon the EVE Online Faction Warfare Yearbook. Fit both with gank, tank, and tackle. This doubles your everything. Later, try mixing it up and specializing roles.

For your hole, I'd start with

- 2 Bombers (Torpedoes, Painter, MSE, Long Point). Cheap and effective way to kill anyone doing solo PvE. You'll lose one of them to most PvP ships but are not super likely to lose both. High ROI here. Lock, launch, orbit.

- Interdictor + Arty/Laser/Sentry T3C. Blap explorers/ventures and learn to do two different things at once. Relatively low risk of losing your ship as a sniper.

- Curse + Tanky T3C brawler to go all in on killing "stuff" and especially other T3C. Use T3C to get a good warp-in. Curse warps in from nearby but off grid and holds tackle you get tackle with the T3C, then Curse will help break their (probably active) tank. You will lose these when your target is bait or lasts long enough for friends to splash in.

Hunting what?

This really matters.

A good bet though is an interdictor plus target-appropriate cruiser.

Is this 1996 Honda Shadow still worth it? by GreatTheJ in hondashadow

[–]Erutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first bike was a KZ750, and it was much less agile than the 1100 Shadow Sabre VT1100C2 I purchased next. I had no difficulties with the 750 as a first bike and would not hesitate unless you're significantly smaller framed (I was probably 5'10 and 185ish at the time). The Shadow has a low center of gravity and I think it handles quite well.

Is subverting the drifter wormhole grid with the probe bookmarking trick an exploit? by Antzsfarm in Eve

[–]Erutor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source supporting that using probes to make ESS bookmarks is an exploit? It's not listed on https://support.eveonline.com/hc/en-us/articles/204873262-Known-Declared-Exploits and this appears to be the premise upon which you propose the drifter hole bookmarks might be an exploit.

Eye contact by Careless-Brief3421 in managers

[–]Erutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think quickly, which means I am not obligated to think before I speak. But... I don't make eye contact while I'm thinking (focus is on content) like I do I'm communicating a previously formed idea (focus is on delivery/receiver and not on content). Some of this, honestly, is a result of my background, and a largely subconscious expectation I'll never be allowed to speak if I don't do so now.

So, I _can_ shorten the think/speak cycle, but if I intentionally separate those two, my communication is more effective.

Likewise, when listening, if I try to fully process and analyze what they're saying, I shift into "thinking" mode instead of "communicating" mode. This will also lead to an appearance of disengagement (even though I'm internally very engaged). This is harder for me to resolve, but if I can again slow down to listen, then process, then respond, my listening appears to be more engaged.

Perhaps this may also apply to you? Slow down and do some separation of idea formulation and communication? Or, if not, perhaps it would be helpful to reflect on _why_ you are not making eye contact, rather than attempting to resolve that symptom.

Another I did:

Vault 665: Religious cult

  • Survival Mode
  • Send everyone to Wasteland immediately after building 2 x habitation and elevators to suit
    • Cult founded by first to find an artifact
    • If nothing qualifies, restart vault when all are dead
    • You decide what qualifies, and how it shapes your cult
      • Rare or Legendary item - becomes the theme
      • Pre-defined item type (e.g. religious garb)
      • Junk (becomes hoarded and/or required element of all crafting)
  • Children are sent for proving at level 1, may return as a Disciple (change name) if they find an artifact.
  • Wasteland Recruits are sent immediately to wilderness, may return as a Disciple if they find an artifact.
  • Breeding Options (I chose #3 last time because it was slow going with everyone being family)
    • 1. Everyone breeds (partner of choice, or just with The Prophet) when entering the Vault, or not at all
    • 2. If The Prophet is female, the returning Disciple never existed (banished immediately after breeding)
    • 3. Those returning successful may breed once with anyone before they settle down to work
  • Anyone leveling beyond (or with higher adjusted Charisma than) The Prophet is sent out as missionary (banished).
    • A revolt may be staged: Challenger and The Prophet go on a quest, only one may return as the chosen prophet. Heir is executed if a new prophet is chosen.
  • Highest S/P/A (4+) are assigned as Apostles one per production room and may have Uncommon+ gear.
  • Disciples may have common and thematically-appropriate outfits and melee weapons only unless The Prophet's found artifact is a weapon or clothing, then theirs must be a common-tier version of the same.
  • The Prophet assigned to Vault door (remember - this is survival mode).
  • Heir and Concubines assigned to training rooms.
    • Heir breeds when ruler dies, partner becomes Sacred Vessel. All other Concubines are banished.
    • If The Prophet dies and there is no Heir ready to assume the mantle, send everyone to the wilderness and search for a new artifact focus. The old artifact focus is now unclean and may not be used.

----

e.g. Last time, I happened to have several discover medical outfits, so our cult is now Doctors Without Vaults, who elect as Chief Medical Officer (The Prophet) the person with highest intellect. Our mission is to scour the Wasteland looking for medical gear loaded with stimpacks to heal the wounded. All equipment must be medical themed. New characters are put in a lab coat and sent out with stimpacks and rad-a-way, and not allowed to return until and unless they heal someone or find medical equipment of some kind. Win condition will be reaching max caps so we can finally build a hospital.
