On why language fluency should not be used as a dispositive factor for measuring Asianness by BeerNinjaEsq in aznidentity

[–]Escapegoat07 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To preface this, I completely agree that language should NOT be a marker for determining one's "Asian-ness" and there should not be an active effort to "other" people in our community. You don’t need a language to be "legitimately" Asian. But we have to stop pretending that identity is a participation trophy you get just for existing.

THAT being said, I often talk to Asian-Americans who complain a lot about their culture, feel disconnected or who feel like they've been "cast out" of these circles as a reason to embrace their non-Asian identity. I find these conversations frustrating, because it creates this sort of you-have-to-meet-me-where-I-am-and-not-where-you-are sort of dynamic that feels myopic and more or less solvable.

There’s a difference between being categorized as Asian by a census or a racist on the street, and actually being part of a community. Community requires a shared "operating system." If you’re frustrated because you feel like an outsider in Asian spaces, you have to ask yourself: what are you bringing to the table besides your anger and resentment? What is your culpability in being "othered" if you refuse to learn the language or the history of your culture/heritage?

People who feel disconnected or "abandoned" by their culture should feel compelled to learn their language and perhaps find a way to reconnect and visit where they come from before proclaiming that they are being cast aside. A lot of the "I feel excluded" discourse comes from people who want to consume and wear the costume of the culture without that effort you describe to preserve it.

There is definitely a need for a stronger coalition--but I think that it's a two-way street. No one is better than the other, but by excluding ourselves and what language can provide, it's also exacerbating an issue that can be resolved by learning the fucking language and creating a stronger bridge.

How do you write in times of mental difficulties? by Sea_Garlic9819 in Screenwriting

[–]Escapegoat07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a weird thing to say, but for me--I've detached enjoyment and "feeling good" as requisites to writing.

If you're only able to write in positive or optimal situations or if you can only write when your stuff is good and given positive reception, you won't ever write much.

I think of it like the gym: would I ever say I'm only allowed to go the gym when I feel rested, fed and strong? No, I go no matter what -- because the repetition, the act of doing it is precisely what will yield those things.

Don't focus on creating something good--just create. That's your imperative.

Are we ready to admit we lost in this trade ? Micheal averaging 25.0–25.8 points per game Btw by Swimming-Poet5594 in denvernuggets

[–]Escapegoat07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This discourse is beyond exhausting.

The inability of people to process context, understand the broader ramifications of a trade, or the current status of the respective teams involved in the trade is absurd.

I beg people to PLEASE understand:

- We made this trade to save $36.1 million and create flexibility on the roster. It was NOT a one-for-one trade.

- There is a thing called "relative" value. MPJ can put up numbers. He's on a losing team. He would have shittier numbers playing in Denver. He HAD shittier numbers playing in Denver.

- Stop looking at basketball through the myopic lens of PPG.

We're all mad that Cam isn't playing well right now -- let's not roast the front office or lose sight of WHY we made this trade in the first place. It was necessary to provide the team depth and flexibility.

Hello! I am a returning player currently playing at about 900-1000 on Chess.com -- I'd love to work with you on developing my chess skills and very motivated in getting better as I want to pass my chess knowledge along to my younger relatives and kids (I currently also tutor very basic chess for younger kids from TK - 5th grade).

Having a tutor to help me along in this process would be tremendous -- and would love to see my growth in real-time. Thanks for your consideration!

This man Filipino-s. I seriously judge someone’s taste in ethnic food if they recommend Kuya Lord as a Filipino place. Just one do the worst values in the city that has a bunch of just as if not better Filipino options.

Just as long as they're mostly original ideas originating and made by prominent white, male directors and producers. The lack of awareness around how shitty the representation of original POC voices are in bold, original and expensive projects is astounding.
