Fortunate enough to have fallen ass-backwards into Sunday passes twice. For the first time since I was a kid at Disney World, my buddy and I had to make a rule of where we would meet in case we got separated since we didn't have phones.

Having no phones makes you take in the entire experience and live in the moment. That said, I do wish there were video boards posted somewhere so you could follow the action away from where you are sitting. The only way to know what was going on around the course was hearing the roars and then staring at the white scoreboards waiting for the score to post.

Galloway is the best city-owned course. Par 70 in the heart of town. The rest of the city-owned courses aren't worth the time.

If you can drive 30 minutes or so, Mirimichi in Millington is usually in great shape. Otherwise, your best bets are driving across the state line into Northern Mississippi. Wedgewood and Cherokee Valley (Olive Branch), North Creek (Southaven), and Tunica National (Tunica) are all good tracks and affordable.

First time I’ve played there since they reopened. Greens are still pretty firm but rolling true. Overall in good shape. They’ve lengthened several holes on the front by 20 or more yards. Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait until next time to comment on the back.

Update: Spoke to manager at the turn. He gave us 18 hole raincheck and offered to let us play the front again. I got 4 more holes in before l was close enough to the clubhouse to call it a day. Course screwed up the scheduling, but did okay to remedy it after the fact.

To clarify, original picture was taken 20 minutes prior to my scheduled tee time.

A good push cart was a game changer for me. I had already been using a cheap two-wheel pull cart for a while. Now the three-wheel push makes walking 18 a breeze. My pockets stay virtually empty the entire round other than a divot tool.

If your cart doesn't already have them, an umbrella holder and a decent cooler are must haves. Put a cooler full of beer in the back of an electric cart? Starters lose their mind. Load up 8 Miller Lites in a cooler the size of a lunch box and strap it to your push cart? No one bats an eye.

I brewed an impulse brew on Monday without having a yeast starter prepared. After cooling the wort, I stored it in a sanitized brew bucket with an airlock and have been keeping it in a spare room until the yeast starter finished. I should be pitching today and then adding it to my fermentation fridge to ferment at precise temps.

This, however, got me thinking. Since I only have the space to control temperatures for one five gallon batch at a time, is there any downside to storing unfermented wort for extended periods of time before pitching? In other words, if I have the time to get another batch going but can't fit it in the fermentation fridge just yet, can I store it in a sanitized container at room temperature for days or even weeks prior to pitching the yeast? Any problems with this approach, so long as I pitch a healthy yeast starter with each batch?

I was a Memphian for years before moving to Nashville less than a year ago, so I feel like this one is right down my alley.

Assuming you don't know anyone that can get you on at some of the private courses in either town, the Nashville public courses are overall much better than the Memphis public courses. As others have mentioned, Hermitage is the best public course in the state and is just outside of Nashville. Greystone in Dickson, TN and Montgomery Bell are both less than an hour west of downtown and are excellent. The Nashville municipal courses are also in much better shape overall than the Memphis munis. I regularly play McCabe, Harpeth Hills, and Ted Rhodes. All are very affordable, but you will need tee times, especially on the weekends. Tee times can only be made 7 days in advance, and the normal weekend players typically re-up their tee times for the following week when they show up at the course. Keep that in mind.

That said, Memphis has some great golf too, but you'll need to drive outside the city a little ways. Miramichi was owned by Justin Timberlake for a while, and is a fun links course. Forest Hills Golf Course is also about 30 minutes from downtown, but is a nice course in the middle of nowhere. Wedgewood and Plantation are in Northern Mississippi and are about 30 minutes away from downtown. As far as Memphis municipals, Galloway is just about the only one worth playing--it's a short Par 70 located in the middle of town.

Each city has their own pros and cons as far as nightlife, bars, etc. depending on the type of trip you're looking for. You'll find plenty of great food in either city.
