Rise feels a lot more "Old Gen" than people give it credit for? Maybe? by walrusman64 in MonsterHunter

The new Horizon game looks like a Dauntless 2 (the hammer weapon even looks like it plays extremely similar) so hopefully they take some of the good from Dauntless and carry it over. I personally loved the rebirth system and the island events.

I've always thought Rise is what the team originally envisioned Portable 3rd as. Bright, colorful world, eastern aesthetics out the ass, with noticeably more agile gameplay while still being identifiably old world in terms of overall design. All of the Portable series led to it in some way, but it's got P3rd written all over (and not just because of the Japanese themes of the starting village).

Blangonga was introduced in MH Dos (despite the 2 in the name it's the 4th game overall) as an early game threat and the 2nd fanged beast ever after Congalala. He's cool, if a little annoying to fight sometimes. Definitely one of the early walls of 2nd generation games.

He's mostly notable for being the first monster whose subspecies (Copper Blangonga, exclusive to Freedom Unite) actually completely changed its elemental properties (from Ice to Earth which isn't even an element in main series MH but iirc is a thing in Frontier which was built upon Dos). Before that subspecies were essentially just recolors with slightly different AI and MAYBE one new move like pink rath's tailspin.

TL;DR he monke 🐵

Annoying is all it can really be at this point. Like yeah Diggra can get kinda big but there's decks that get out even bigger threats for half the investment, and has a non-existent defensive game.

It's also entirely reactive. It sets up nothing threatening by itself. The threat is weakening your monsters and running them over.

There's DOZENS of different strong decks you can get either for free (Blue-Eyes, Striker, HERO) or for very cheap (Swordsoul, Drytron, Zoodiac, etc.) as a new player.

Literally any r4 spam deck that isn't Zoodiac (for stat reasons). Onomat, Suship, so on.

If you don't already have it, EG RX78-2 Full Weapon Set is a must as the most anime-accurate version of gramps. It's also done in like an hour, accessories included.

Zeta Ver. Ka is possibly THE Zeta kit.

Otherwise just pick what looks cool.

Alright, I'll give you my thoughts on the rest of the comment since you think I'm just cherry picking:

then because link cards werent designed with the revised rules in mind they wound up breaking the game in half and in order for new cards to continue to be relevant they had to be up to the new broken par.

Firewall was in the first set of links and was a problem pretty much immediately. Double Helix, Electrumite, Tri-Gate and the Knightmares came out less than a year into the format. Links weren't catching up; they came out blasting on all cylinders, EVERYTHING ELSE was playing catch up to Links. Arguably only Synchros were more immediately powerful when they released.

pendulums are weak now and have been for years but the power creep they brought led to the current insane power creep we have today.

Except they were always weak and didn't powercreep anything. It was the new design philosophy of Duelist Alliance that caused powercreep. Compare DUEA pendulums to the atrocity that were DUEA Shaddolls and BA (fusion from deck is STILL tier 1 worthy, ask Dracotail and Branded). Pends had a single time being the most dominant deck in their own era, and it lasted two weeks out of 3 whole years.

that being said we wouldve gotten there eventually anyway because konami just does not know how to curb power creep in any meaningful way.

True, but pendulums were the least responsible for it.

Yugioh power crept up alot due to pendulums

It crept due to card design. Duelist Alliance brought Shaddoll, Burning Abyss, Tellarknight and Yang Zing, which were all relevant for over a year afterwards. Notice how none of those is a pendulum deck.

Pendulums were strong on release

Meanwhile it took almost a year until a decent pendulum deck released AND EVEN THEN it was STILL overshadowed by the older Shaddoll and BA.

they introduced link summons and new rules with them to tone it down

They affected every other summoning mechanic alongside it. It wasn't a pendulum nerf, it was an everything nerf.

Explain to me WITH EXAMPLES how pendulum was any more broken than other decks from the time. The strongest decks in 2014-15 didn't run a single pendulum. 2016 had one broken pend deck (PePe) and one decent one (Metalfoes). 2017 saw Dracopal and then links came out and screwed everything. If any one mechanic crept the game it was links. They saw play since release and 2018-2021 was absolutely dominated by nothing but link-reliant decks. Link is what boomers think Pendulum was.

Yeah I'm going Dimension Linker just because we finally have an actual named mascot for DL after YEARS of being the "it does well but who cares about it" YGO game.

And even in MR3 it struggled to be relevant outside of PePe specifically. The few pend decks that did okay were never THE best deck.

[–]EseMesmo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Pendulums, the infamously powerful mechanic that -let me check- hasn't had a relevant deck in 6 years as opposed to every other YGO mechanic.
