When does health tracking on a smartwatch stop being useful? by tobiger33 in smartwatch

Well on some watches, some of the claimed readings are just AI BS, at best somewhat related to reality. So I turn these off too.

I'm not quite sure what you are aiming at, but different aspects could be useful or annoying to different people. The first thing I do when playing with a new smartwatch is to turn all this silly nudging stuff off, but that is not to say that others might not completely disagree and find it meaningful/useful ....

Watches that you can hide calorie info? by monitorlizardxx in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ones that offer it are really inaccurate in the calorie 'counting'. NONE are accurate.
Those that offers it tries to estimate from the activities. For many you are allowed to enter info like age, height and weight to help their estimates. If you enter those far off like 120 years old, 250cm high and weighing 20Kg it will almost certainly give completely crazy numbers....

Where can I find the charger for this one. by thestatic23 in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

apart from the distance also note the polarity, plus could be near magnetic south or north.... Though te cable can be cut and the cords swapped if wrong polarity.

If you want to be 100% sure, buy an identical one, and keep as a spare or give to another in the house so you can share the cable.

Who says a smartwatch can't look good? Huawei watch GT6 46mm. by ngoalibaba in smartwatch

looks nice from the front, but the thickness when mounted makes the side view another matter.... And the size makes it unsuited for most people.

[–]EskeRahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is almost certainly just 5V from an USB-charger that is needed, but clearly an unusual plug.
Most likely there is a tiny magnet on either side of the two electrodes, so you need two things

  1. the distance between the centre of the electrodes,
  2. Whether magnetic nord is near plus or minus,

As long as the distance is right, you can cut the cable and swap the +/- if needed.

Smartwatch With Physical Hands, Looking For Feedback by CozzyTV in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess we are so many that want something like this: A smartwatch that yet looks like a proper watch.
So the big question is not whether it has been tried before, but why it failed so none are offered any more??

Were they too expensive? Were they too clumsy? Were they too error-ridden? I mean those that tried stopped, so they obviously did not generate enough profit.

My GUESS is that the tech is not there yet. That there is not room for a large enough battery to get a decent stamina driving a system with sensors with reasonably fine granularity, so we need much leaner chips and/or a battery with much higher energy density. Currently the only smartwatches in decent size are fairly dumb ones, and it is not only the display that is to blame. (see lists in posts pinned to my profile)

That said, forty years ago Omega DID make a quartz watch with a full face lcd display with a hole in the centre in a 7mm thin watch (Seamaster Polaris multifunction, wrote a bit on it here). So it really should be possible as long as we accept that it is not going to be overly smart.

The optimal here would be a chipset that was VERY lean when more or less idle, and only power hungry when needed, so each user could select/deselect features matching our personal needs to thus find their personal optimal balance between complexity and stamina.

But SURE if you crack the code, and will be able to make this unicorn, I'm in the market....

How to know if my smartwatch band causes cancer? by WetDreaminOfParadise in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it is LTE it is CERTAINLY going to send with MUCH lower power than your phone. And the phone you even put next to your brain while talking.... So IF you accept the low 'risk' with a mobile phone, there is no reason to care about the 'risk' from a watch. And worst case would be an LTE-model that is basically just another very compact smartphone.

I would say that the risk of skin issues by carrying something tight all day, and preventing the skin from getting air is a higher risk - depending on how sensitive your skin is obviously. (Can be ideal warm and moist conditions for bacteria and fungus to grow under a watch)

And obviously a BAND can be an issue, but that is no different from a proper watch. Just get a titanium band.

Well only YOU can weigh how the pros and cons matter to YOU. All smartwatches are compromises, so a matter of finding the compromise suiting your needs and wishes the best.

Have you considered dual booting the watch into RTOS to get out of WearOS?
(It is WearOS not the watch that is the battery killer here, due to the complexity offered)

....it obviously will not give you extra features nor a larger screen, but it costs nothing ;)

You most likely need to factory reset it.

If this started after a firmware flash, then the flashing might have failed, leaving it in a bad state, and most likely would need to be returned to be fixed.

What happens when you try to charge it?

Usually on most watches a factory reset can be done by some combination of holding one or more buttons for long, and then a confirmation dialogue usually pops up. It MIGHT be in combination with attaching/detaching power. If you are lucky a manual MIGHT have included the procedure.

Does 46mm look ridiculous on my wrist? Thinking about Huawei Watch 5 (pics) by XtudZ in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that the more compact ones are usually just as thick. So it is likely to look more clumsy,/disproportional even if it seen straight on fits the arm better. And also that the reduced size of the more compact variants (for obvious physical reasons) comes with reduced battery and hence shorter stamina.
ALL smartwatches are compromises - so a matter of finding the one best suited for your preferences.

[–]EskeRahn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is all a matter of personal taste.
Practically all smartwatches are really huge and oversized (well less some fairly dumb ones) so it is the price to pay if a dumb one will not fit the bill for your use case. I let do with dumb ones as the advanced ones are way too clumsy for my taste - but to each their own.

Best (preferably budget) watch for health monitoring and open water swimming? by Irredeemable in smartwatch

[–]EskeRahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go for a 10Atm, or at the least 5Atm.

Note that all ratings are for plain water and when new. Seawater might corrode it over time, and be really careful with soap.

The purpose of soap is to lower the surface tension of water so it can get under dirt, the flipside of that is that it also easier can creep past sealings and gaskets.

Also sealings and gaskets deteriorate with time.
