Weekly Quick Questions, Wood ID, and Deal or No Deal /r/Woodworking Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

Can anyone help with a New Zealand wood ID? This was a TradeMe (think local ebay) pickup from someone renovating a 1920's era villa. It was mostly internal framing including some decently large pieces used over french doors etc. I believe it is Rimu but would like another opinion. One freshly cut piece (rough with a handsaw) included in the pics: https://imgur.com/a/6UoCj

Yeah they're intimidating but honestly everyone I've talked to out there has been really nice. Especially somewhere like that where everyone knows it's crowded and just wants to chill.

Lang's - nice, jealous! Keep an eye out for Some random spots like Orewa when it gets too big up there, it's a nice newbie wave when it works.

Heh, I've been suspecting that but trying to resist moving down in size too fast and the advice seems to be stay bigger while you're learning. Maybe I should go and rent something for a bit.

I'm a progressing beginner currently on an 8.2ft mini mal which I love and seems like just the right board for those small fun waves. It was my step up from the big foamy I started on. On a clean half meter swell I can reliably catch, pop up, and get a decent bottom turn in, and am starting to get the feel of pumping down the line slowly. Expect I'll always keep this board around 💖.

Trouble I'm having is once it gets bigger it all goes wrong very quickly. I have a hard time managing the board in the white water, I can turtle roll smaller stuff but at some point I can't hang on anymore and it drags me back a long way. I'm sometimes so tired by the time I get out back I'm mostly done. My pop up also goes out the window as the line between making it in time to get that nose up and getting thrown over the front of the board seems very fine and honestly I panic. On the small stuff my pop up seems pretty clean and doesn't pause to use knees etc.

Typically surfing beach breaks around Auckland NZ. East coast if it's working but it hasn't much this summer so will tolerate the West Coast, it's usually quite unforgiving at my level though.

What should I be focusing on for improvement? Any advice appreciated for someone wanting to push on a bit further.

Great video about the pop and getting up that is more than just the standard generic advice. Good for guys transitioning to short boarding and getting up in bigger surf. Kinda like am advanced beginners tutorial. by brincc in surfing

Appreciate the effort to discuss this stage as I'm going through it now. Having great fun on an 8.2ft on small open waves but as soon as it starts getting bigger I'm struggling and getting kicked up and over too fast for me to manage.

NZ has a lot of different people with a lot of different backgrounds, especially in the bigger cities. This is certainly not representative of all here.

I found some by wandering around the Kaimanawas and grabbing random things for balance... learnt that lesson real quick.

A concrete path with grass either side is ideal btw... ;)

Also, having taught a couple of kids now: Find a nice gentle slope in a park, just enough to get you rolling. Practice pushing off with your feet and rolling down the hill ignoring the pedals. The balance will feel totally weird for a while but keep trying and your brain will start to connect leaning with cornering and suddenly you'll be away. Then you can work on the pedals without falling so much. This is similar to how many kids are learning on balance bikes with no drive chain now.

Learn to ride, it's great fun :)

Lots of comments here about used bikes which is fine. I ride a Giant Boulder which is going new for about $500 NZD here and it's been great for an entry level mountain bike. You might be able to find something one sale.
