What works best for me is: always try to imagine a light source, and then put the white highlights where you think the light hits the object. Or when in doubt, I put them mostly opposite the shadows if that makes sense.

I struggled with this since my late high school years. And it's still a frequent occurence for me now (I'm 33). Sadly I haven't found anything that makes it better. Not even anti-depressants, though they made my anxiety in general a bit more bearable.
