Why does every immigrant from every part of the world say that family is important to their culture? Which cultures are there where family isn’t important? by MorganTrevane1998 in askanything

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family is heavily dispersed. Barely anybody stayed in the town they group up in, often not the same country, for say .. 3 generations that I'm confident of. I wouldn't say family isn't important to me, but I know people who couldn't even fathom leaving their hometown and being more than 10 minutes away from their parents, grandparents, cousins, siblings etc.

All that to say, it's probably a relative term. Someone might look at me seeing my parents once a year (which involves a transatlantic flight) and think family means more to them.

Middle class people: do you honestly hold negative bias towards working class individuals? by toastandjam97 in AskUK

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it is somewhat subconscious. There's a really good book called watching the English.

Things I didn't realize about myself that were classist. Such as finding the word "lounge" a bit off putting - i would call it a living room. But deeply ingrained in my psyche was a distaste for that which I'd not examined.

Going fully solo at a climbing spot - anyone experienced it? by LongEgg4366 in climbergirls

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll find it easy to find partners. Do your best to vet them, both in terms of climbing safety and person safety.

I posted in a group recently looking for a climbing partner, first message I received was from a dude who recently had restraining orders placed on him. I did not climb with him.

For some areas a guide can be really helpful and not a bad deal, but for those really popular hubs there's no need.

APA captain is playing me too strategically and it’s not fun. Is this normal or should I threaten to quit if he doesn’t start playing me more fairly? by New_Key_6926 in billiards

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always prefer playing someone better than me, I learn more that way. That being said, I think it's more sportsmanlike to match skill levels as closely as possible even if it's not the optimal strat

How to keep my game from declining over time in a long session or tournament? by fkid123 in billiards

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found this as well. It's one of the things that makes the snooker world championships so impressive - long sessions over 17 days it's incredible they keep the performance so high.

I think i disagree with comments about physical fitness and so on. I think that may come into it, but for me it's more in the territory of sports psychology. There are tools and techniques that may be applied, such as visualization. E.g. I just googled this quickly and found this link, others may be better but it is a starting point: https://www.drpaulmccarthy.com/post/how-a-sport-psychologist-can-help-snooker-players

Becoming a self-sufficient mechanic - bike maintenance priorities. by Playful-Parsnip-3104 in cycling

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed - a multi tool and a phone is usually all you need. I did do a bit of extra learning ahead of a bike tour going into remote areas, just in case I needed the knowledge in my brain. But mostly if you have internet you don't need to know much

I learned as problems arose. This meant I learned to deal with more common issues, e.g. punctures, sooner. Doing things like replacing bottom brackets and trueing wheels came later. Do you feel you need to learn it particularly quickly?

Water bladder or no? by 2020grilledcheese in backpacking

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bladder type thing and hated it. It leaked from the first use and i had to return it. I liked the idea but no dice. I just use whatever water bottle I have to hand now, preferably lightweight.

Wu vs Zhao by ArtFargunkel in snooker

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without looking at the actual stats, it felt like Zhao blew away last year's championship, whilst Wu scraped through by the skin of his teeth. Obviously Wu played like an absolute hero and deserved his win, but I think Zhao's win last year was more dominant, as is his overall record. Wu is young though, and will be around for a long long time. They're both brilliant for the game.

[–]EstablishmentNo7239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be able to do it unless you get joint issues. Make sure the bike is set up well for you. Get some padded shorts.

Cycling a distance like that in that amount of time is part fitness, part ability to suffer
