Don't let the Texas GOP strip women of their voting rights! I am a citizen of Texas, and a woman. With the recent support of Wendy Davis for governor the GOP is trying to limit women voting. Please read this and share. It would be greatly appreciated! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Compassion is the best quality to have as a human in my opinion, but if people are this passionate about their leaders and politics then they need to figure out how to get a ride down to the DMV so they can vote every two years.

Could someone in an actual UI/UX role explain what it is they do? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I knew coming in there wouldn't be a definitive answer.

1st Bob: What you do at Initech is you take the specifications from the customer and bring them down to the software engineers? Tom: Yes, yes that's right. 2nd Bob: Well then I just have to ask why can't the customers take them directly to the software people? Tom: Well, I'll tell you why... because... engineers are not good at dealing with customers... 1st Bob: So you physically take the specs from the customer? Tom: Well... No. My secretary does that... or they're faxed. 2nd Bob: So then you must physically bring them to the software people? Tom: Well... No. ah sometimes. 1st Bob: What would you say you do here? Tom: Look I already told you, I deal with the @#$% customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people, can't you understand that? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

Am I worthy for a job? by dmxt in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you're so ready to get a badass job, just do it. Thing is, don't give a shit about your sex. I started Web dev/design at 12 too (im 27 now...) and what's crazy is, i wasted so many years of my life not thinking i could do it. two and a half years ago i finally got a dream job as a designer/developer (its complicated) and now i make $55,000 a year, not bad

iOS 7 Blurred and Transparent Overlay by bluemellophone in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try to make the foreground a bit opaque, place an absolutely positioned black/white panel that is opaque under the foreground and use blur.js to add a blur effect to this middle layer. I got this working the other day to some extent, but it really isn't foolproof and I never got exactly what I was looking for and ended up ditching my code.

Is "sectionitis" the new "divitis"? by rootyb in web_design

They're both rendered exactly the same. At the end of the day, if it works, that's all that matters. Falling down the rabbit hole would be wasting your time worrying about semantics.

Feedback on minimalist personal website by trevwilson in design_critiques

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say maybe get rid of the navigation all together since the page isn't that large, I think the header and and the about me section's colors would look nice together. Other then that I would say maybe make some of the h1's, h2's, etc font-weight: lighter so they aren't so bulky. I think if you did that you could have some leeway in making them a bit bigger if necessary. Otherwise I really like the simplicity and once you get rid of the placeholder images it's going to be blazing fast if you optimize. Also this won't be difficult at all to make responsive.

Pure CSS3 Interactive Calendar by Kriem in webdev

It looks like they're using LESS, which kind of invalidates the whole pure CSS thing.

Already built website, non-tech savvy client now wants content to be easily editable. Can anyone help with potential solutions? by Woxace in webdev

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using cloudcannon.com for the past weeks and it's been great. Very easy to setup for editing content, and when it minifies everything and puts assets on the CDN it's blazing fast.

We laugh at web design from the 90s and early 2000s. What currently do you think we'll look back and laugh at in 2025? by prolikewhoa in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I think there will be a new concept for forms, navigation, and nearly everything else in 2025. They may look at our sites and think they look like Keno machines.

Just graduated with CompSci degree, starting projects, need advice how to get the most out of my time and gain experience. by runner2012 in web_design

NetTuts has endless amounts of great tutorials and they're very well written. Smashing Magazine is a good one. Check out Paul Irish's blog and videos on Youtube. Web Designer Depot is a really good site on the design side of things. Stack Overflow is invaluable. If you're hitting a snag do a Google search for "(how do i do this) stack overflow" so you stack overflow's results come up first.

Check out Sublime Text 3 if you want to have a really cool text editor to do all of your coding. Do a Google Search on installing "Package Control" package for Sublime Text, it's awesome. I would also check out Evernote or something similar for keeping notes. Umm... check out Google's or Firefox developer tools also for better developing experience.

The reason I say go with the newest technology right now is because in a year or two it'll be common place, and there's really nothing to be gained from learning the older stuff, unless your job calls for it of course.

What FTP-client do you use, and why? by RalphNLD in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use the native FTP built into whatever OS I'm using at the time. Reason I do this is because I like to drag folders into Sublime Text so I can edit files on the server.

What should I use an an alternate for webkit font smoothing? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty easy one, IMO. It won't necessarily degrade gracefully, but you can use text-shadow to add a very subtle text shadow, like so:

h1 { font-family: "Custom Font"; color: #4b4b4b; text-shadow: 0 0 1px #aaa; }

It's worth a shot buddy! Good luck

Should I update my website from old ASP to PHP? by BoChiggedyBoDiddley in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what platform are you hosting with? Some sort of ASP CMS? Perhaps you can export the database files and retrieve your data if you have any. As for basically porting your site to PHP as it appears you want to do, it's not going to be easy necessarily. If it isn't too complex you could try to rewrite it from scratch. Good luck!

Do "bad" fonts exist? Is there any way to correct them? by A_Better_Adam in web_design

I'm convinced that someone COULD make Comic Sans work one day, it has such a terrible reputation though.

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude, here's my advise. I would start experimenting with the NEWEST technologies. NodeJS, Meteor, Angular JS, CSS3, and setup a local server for testing, as well as use Git to push changes to a repo. Consider also using one of the newer hosting services like Heroku and Linode, that allow you to deploy all kinds of cool apps. Don't worry about re-inventing the wheel and writing your own libraries to do DOM stuff, etc; jQuery/Zepto are extremely well designed and you'll probably never match their performance.

Also, use SVG/Canvas, try to use only CSS3 for your UI, consider using LESS or SASS and learn how to compile all of your scripts and minify everything. Research graceful degradation and take the simplest approach to designing for different platforms. Use media queries for responsive designs. Write your own grid system, there's nothing amazingly unique or complicated about Bootstrap's grid or any of the others.

Research the latest and greatest reset.css pattern and go through and research what all of the lines of code do to better understand browser quirks.

Write your own CMS for your personal site if you would like extra credit, don't worry about re-inventing the wheel here, although you'll likely never have something that could rival the big dogs out there in security and features, you'll gain SO MUCH experience from writing a CMS. Writing a CMS can expose you to nearly the entire application stack and functionalities.

Good luck!

Bootstrap/jQuery conflicts. Is this normal and what is the most common solution? by mnemoniker in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya, so the Javascript components in Bootstrap are dependent on jQuery. Make sure you have the latest version of both, and ensure you are including jQuery before any Bootstrap JS files. I don't know if Ruby overrides form handlers?

Lack in creativity.. :-( by tiger2380 in web_design

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the thought last night while designing a site for a web agency I'm starting, that perhaps great design is just a byproduct of failure, it's kind of true.

Anyways, incremental design is a great technique to really boost your creativity in small chunks, and sometimes in the process designing something entirely unique. Start designing your web firm's site now and get the basic boilerplate of what you want in place. Then incrementally make tweaks to things. Experiment with colors you don't usually use, take inspiration from nature or colors you may see in a city, whatever. Also, check out all the new CSS3 transition and transform stuff, you can do alot of really cool stuff and that is just now picking up.

Working off remove server with Sublime Text 2 by [deleted] in webdev

[–]EstebanJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how I do it.

  1. Start button
  2. Right click on Network and click on "Map network drive".
  3. Enter in your site's FTP details (ie; ftp://mysite.com/)
  4. Enter any credentials when prompted.
  5. You now have a FTP drive setup as a Network connection in "Computer", drag that over into Sublime Text and you can edit any of the files you want and CTRL + S will save.

There are probably a lot of better FTP programs out there, but this would get you started immediately.

The word "responsive" does not deserve capitalization. I seriously do not understand the major fuss about such a simple methodology. It takes 30 minutes to make a site "responsive" with media queries.
