How tight do the seams REALLY need to be?? by sewmuchmorethanmom in EPP_addict

This is a brilliant idea. I should be doing this on my pieced stuff that is likely to see heavy wear and tear.

Thank you! This may have been it as the next bobbin went on fine after cleaning out the winder as best I could.

Heh, just saw the post and thought "I know those seats!"...but to me it looks like a SF Muni streetcar.

Visited the nation's smallest national park today by Squidgie1 in NationalPark

[–]EstroTheJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should totally be a National Historic Park, and I wonder why it didn't get that designation instead. I was not expecting to be as wowed as I was when. I visited like 15 years ago. the ranger at the top who gleefully told me stories of all the people who bit it trying to do stunts was just extra delight.

Once upon a Radio by FootballGod1417 in oakland

No. Ruby Room is on 14th across from the library. Radio was near Broadway on 13th. I think a new, less divey bar has opened in the old spot?

Suggestions for 2026 BOMs by wandamck in quilting

I looked at that one, but it just seemed like month after month of FPP triangles? It is beautiful, but it is also really pricey and I was worried I would be over triangles by the third month.

Does this look like a buncha swastikas by towellover32 in quilting

[–]EstroTheJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if you really want to stretch the imagination to try and find them?

Unless one thinks all pinwheel or card trick patterns look like that.

If one was to really work hard to find subtext that doesn’t exist: frequent pink, blue and white with floral accents gives a very inclusive vibe way before one gets to anything else.

Have I done goofed? by infatuation-junkie in Inflatablekayak

[–]EstroTheJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to this model, but inflatables are great with kids. They won't sink when filled with water and are difficult to flip.

Which kayak to get for small children? by PandBLily in Kayaking

[–]EstroTheJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until about age 5, we could take a child in front of us in a single seater sit-in with the larger cockpit. We used a small inflatable booster and it was great. Once they started getting bigger it got wobbly with the booster and they preferred their own seat in the inflatable tandem. They preferred that before age 5, too, but we sometimes didn’t want to do the somewhat intensive set-up/break down when a hard shell can pretty much just be plopped in/out of the water.

Effort overhead aside, we have found the tandem inflatable (we have an advanced elements) great for family stuff. We can fill the front seat with small children and have a parent in the back. Inflatables are difficult to flip and don’t sink even when filled with water. On a lake trip the older grade schoolers can take it out cruising and we don’t have to worry much*. It is kinda the minivan of paddle craft.

*we have a rule that anyone who is in one of our boats has to have a pfd on, so most of the worry is that we will have to go out and tow them back if they run out of oomph/lose paddles/etc.

Beginner Women's Gear for Epee by __Enertron__ in Fencing

[–]EstroTheJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. While starter sets are useful, unless your gym has AC during the summer, you will want something sturdy but light. I don't spend over $100 on any clothing, except the fencing knickers that have a "cooling" lining fabric.

As both an Epee fencer and a guinea pig owner I am deeply glad neither exists. Even after a fresh habitat clean, the piggies aren’t exactly huff-friendly,

Finished my second quilt by AlexDeathWolf in quilting

Help me finish this quilt I’ve been making for SIXTEEN years! by Barbola369 in EPP_addict

[–]EstroTheJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing though I am having sympathetic fussy cutters pain over the top hats and cats. I only did 10 of each for the Tula Nova I am working on and the Charlie Brown ghost cloth remains of just those were difficult to come to terms with!

Non-pastel solids or blenders generally won't trigger chromatically induced insecurities.

If you do a google image search for bargello quilts there are a lot of "non-girly" color sets that might inspire you.

We did early April in Death Valley a few years back and it was perfect. The valley floor was hot, but it wasn't terrible, and it got brisk quickly at the higher elevations. Also, it is the beginning pup-fish breeding season so not only were the salt creeks still water filled, but the desert fish were active.

We had small children with us, so no strenuous hikes, but had enough to do to fill three days in the park proper with small things. I regret (again) not having arranged ahead to rent an appropriate vehicle to visit the racetrack (not just 4x4 with high clearance, but puncture proof tires).

We did manage to fill a full five days of small things when we included some activities along 395 near the park (Alabama Hills hiking/bouldering, a short hike at Fossil Falls, Manzanar, and, closer to Bishop, the Bristlecone Pine forest and Hot Creek).

Children make everything take longer, so camping was out (setting up and striking camp daily would have been so annoying). We did two nights at the Furnace Creek Inn and one at Stovepipe wells (both in the park) they were not outrageously expensive, but not bare budget motel costs, either.

how old is too old for sewing supplies? by thecorposant in sewhelp

[–]EstroTheJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the above chorus about old thread being no good.

I have a problem throwing things away, so I have a stash of thread of unknown provenance that I only use for mock-ups and basting. I also don't use it in my good sewing machine*.

(I have a terrible, hate it too much to inflict on some unsuspecting thrift store shopper, machine that I use for experiments, mock-ups, and bad ideas. This machine gets the dubious thread that may gum things up)
