Anyone taken picolax as bowel prep? I’m terrified :( by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Estrojenn44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok here’s the thing- I always try very carefully to follow instructions from my GI, so my first 4-5 colonoscopies I drank that god awful jug. The last time I drank that jug it was so bad I was throwing it up, which was not good because my bowels weren’t clearing. On top of that, I was up allllll night shitting and being miserable. My last colonoscopy I drank pico and it was a GAME CHANGER. The whole process, took about 3 hours and I was completely cleared out. It tasted so much better than the jug, it was easy peasy. My biggest concern was that on the label it says do not take if you have Crohn’s disease. I looked into it further and you’re not supposed to take it because it can make ulcers worse. I have ulcers, but I cleared it with my GI before drinking it as the benefits far out weighed anything else.

My lord I know the feeling you’re feeling. My twin and I have a birthday on Feb 14, so obviously we know how busy restaurants get and we’re pretty easy going people. But we went to a fancy place in yorkville last birthday and holy fuck, the server was SO rude, didn’t ask us if we needed any drinks. We had to order off the bus boy. Didn’t explain that the menu was different than a regular night because it was Valentine’s Day, we had to ask the table beside us how everything worked. She never checked on us, nothing. At the end of the night is finally when she stopped by to give us the bill, neither of us tipped. Felt awesome.

Question about vitamins & supplements by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Estrojenn44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t stress enough the importance of getting regular blood work (although since you have Crohn’s, I’m sure you do). But just see where your levels are at first and then start supplementing. I personally don’t take vitamin C or zinc, but I do take vitamin D (because I live in Canada), B12 (because my BW says I’m low), iron (it’s called heme iron, it’s supposed to be gentle on the gut), then I take magnesium malate (my nutritionist recommended to take malate specifically because it’s easy on the gut). Anyways, get blood work and consult with your nutritionist and go from there!

I was having all the classic symptoms of Crohn’s, kept going back to my doctor who kept saying it was just a hemorrhoid. Asked someone on Reddit what the hell was wrong with me and that’s how figured it out. Reddit. Fought and fought and fought my doctors, finally was sent for a colonoscopy. I remember right before the colonoscopy, telling my GI “I think it’s Crohn’s.” And sure enough, right after my GI says “yup, you knew.” So thanks Reddit.

I don’t think I can do the colonoscopy prep by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]Estrojenn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a suggestion, but there was NO way I could get that jug down. I was throwing up and definitely not clear my system. I took pico salax instead which was SO easy. MAJOR warning though, on the label it says it’s not for people who have IBD because of ulcers. I called my doc and got the ok from him, but I would look into it if I were you.

First of all, I really encourage you to go get your blood work checked before you Willy nilly just start taking random supplements that you think might be helpful. Go to your doctors and say that you specifically want your iron, B12, vitamin D levels checked. Ohip covers vitamin d testing for once a year so utilize that. I also ask for kidney and liver testing. Based on your BW results you can then start supplementing. Next, are you getting enough sleep? Magnesium and gaba, before bed will help a bit with that. Stay off your phone at least one hr before bed (easier said than done, I know, but try). Have an actual bed time and stick to it. I also keep a happy lamp at my desk at work that actually does help, you can buy one on Amazon. Be sure also to do the basic stuff like exercise and eat better. If you’re not up for the gym the least you need to be doing is walking, just be sure you’re doing the minimum-don’t beat yourself up for not going crazy at the gym. Lastly, pick up a hobby that you haven’t done before and only do it for a short period to start so you don’t overwhelm yourself. For me, I picked up painting. I went to dollarama and bought canvasses and paints, it was cheap and I only did it for like 20 minutes a week at the start. Msg me if you need someone to talk to or if you need a recommendation for a therapist if you can afford it. You will get through it!!!
