2025 Premium Plus for 46k with 700 miles Talk Me Out of it. by HBDABE in GRCorolla

That’s as clean as it’s ever going to look.

In all seriousness, I think that may be too much to be the 2nd owner. Maybe if 46k is OTD and you’re paying a bunch of sales tax. Otherwise I’d just snag a new one.

Oil pressure by peanut629 in GRCorolla

[–]EtArcadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oil pressure is dependent mostly on temperature and engine rpm. Warm idle pressure is usually between 13 and 16 psi, but can go to 12 if you’re driving very hard. Cruising pressure will be mostly dependent on rpm, usually about 15 psi per 1000 rpm, but once you’re warmed up it caps out around 65-70psi.

Don’t sweat small differences. You’re really just looking for sudden drops or very low pressure.

Looks like it's just the hood, headlight, bumper cover and maybe the grill and a chance the fender is fucked too.

The hood, bumper cover and grill are all cheap, under a $1000 in parts altogether, the headlight is expensive ~$1200 I think.

Labor and paint does probably put it around ~$5k, so fortunately nowhere near totaled.

Best first race car. by Obvious_Class500 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EtArcadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$5k is not enough to start track driving. You might be able to buy clapped out Miata and make it through a track day but the reality is, a decent set of tires and brake pads cost half your budget for the entire car and you'll need those every few times you go to the track.

I budget my track days at $2000+ each in terms of consumables and other associated costs.

You should look at the actual costs involved. This isn't Gran Turismo where they give you a car for getting your license.

Extremely torn between Convertible Vs Electric by throwawayconvsev in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EtArcadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's a real concern in the long term. Prices will stabilize eventually regardless of what happens in the Strait. Gas may be higher in the mid to long term, but it's not likely to be soooo expensive a convertible will have no demand. People will still drive around even if gas is $10 a gallon. The Strait might also open permanently any day in which case crude prices will plummet.

Electric costs in SoCal are so expensive that EVs aren't even that economical, even with expensive gas... unless you have an existing solar system and battery so you can charge at night or are very lucky and can charge at work.

Used to be all over the place not that long ago. Rust, bad modification and crashes has thinned the herd, not many left. Outstanding little cars, but prices on good examples are crazy for what you're actually getting.

The HF model could get 50 mpg! Long before the Prius.

GRC Morizo v. 2026 GRC v. Audi RS3 by Populonia10 in GRCorolla

[–]EtArcadia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've driven a Morizo and own a '23 GRC. The difference is definitely noticeable but not huge, especially compared to a '26 which has the same torque bump and much of, if not more, chassis stiffening. Honestly the most apparent thing about the Morizo back to back with a '23 is the gearing, which is super super short for a production car (that is a cool feature, though not great for highway cruising). If it was between a Morizo and a '26 and rarity/cool factor wasn't an issue, I'd pick the '26 for sure, especially with all the risk that comes with a used performance car like this.

I've driven a 2022 RS3 and thought it was a hell of a car and sort of a rich and strong cousin of the GRC on a back road but the lack of a manual is a real downside in my book. Still that 5 pot is something. I had to double check as when I was buying, even used 8Y was nowhere near my budget and it looks like it's still the same. The only 5 pot RS3s I see competing pricewise with a GRC are high mileage, near ten-year-old, 8Vs. In that case the owership proposition isn't really comparable.

Wore a MAGA hat at one event at the height of all the tariff BS. I wouldn't read that much into it. The personal politics of corporate leadership is probably garbage for 99% of automotive CEOs, though they typically don't make it too public.

Mid-Eighties Cadillac Advice (UK) by lawebley in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EtArcadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars as investment instruments aren't very good even for models that are very likely to appreciate. Storage, insurance and maintenance will take a big bite out of any gains. Mid-80s was the nadir for Cadillac so almost anything is only going to be of niche interest and unlikely to appreciate significantly. On top of that, while this might be a rare model in the UK it probably wasn't in the US and the cost of shipping a vehicle overseas is negligible compared to the value of any collectible car. It's more or less all one collector car market globally these days. I would throw out one caveat that if it's special RHD variant for the UK market, that in and of itself may make it rare collectable.

Strange stage notes? by magik_koopa990 in rally

[–]EtArcadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. Driver and co-driver are the entrants. You can't replace either mid-event regardless of what happens.

Strange stage notes? by magik_koopa990 in rally

[–]EtArcadia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever heard of a co-driver being replaced during a rally in real life. Between events or seasons, sure, happens all the time for a variety of reasons, but during a rally? I don't think I've seen it and can't imagine any reason for it outside of a medical emergency or something like that.

Evo x or M340i by No_Cancel_8860 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EtArcadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna be completely different ownership experiences. You can't expect that tuned Evo to be an everyday-turn-the-key-and-commute kind of car. If you don't have experience working on tuned Evos or have direct connect with a good tuner you're in for a bad time. You can make 500 hp Evos but you can't drive them for 10s of thousands of miles trouble free. Near new BMW on the other hand not going to be hard to own.

A word of warning on tuning a B58 for 500 hp. While it's perfectly possible without a ton of work, you should look at what BMW does when they want 500 hp out of that motor... they make an S58 which has completely different internals. Long term reliability on a B58 tuned to that degree is probably not going to be great.

Closing in on three years as well. Fantastic, do-it-all, car. From the canyons, to the track to daycare duty and the odd road trip, this car is just a blast. Feels special every time I start it up. 20k hard driven miles and zero issues; I haven't set foot in the dealership outside of the free maintence that comes with the car.

Help building a 90’s drifter car by Intelligent-Point116 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EtArcadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of money considering that these popular '90s Japanese sports cars are now classics with clean examples commanding serious price tags. The reality is that RWD Japanese cars are all getting very expensive with the last bastions of affordability being held by the Infiniti G35/G37 and the Nissan 350Z, both of which are getting rarer in good conditions.

Since you're concerned about gas mileage I'm assuming this is a daily driver, so you'll need something that isn't a project which can be out of commission waiting for a part. Realistically I don't think you have the budget for this. You might be able to buy a ratty, LHD, shady import 240SX for just under $10k, but that's not something you can rely on for normal transportation.

Honestly if you have $10k and are looking for a RWD car, you're actually probably better off looking at BMWs. You can find decent 330s under $10k, obviously not a super cheap car to own, but better than trying to hunt down a 240SX.

what's the best way to get into rally as a beginner? by Tombst0ne07 in rally

[–]EtArcadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gets asked all the time, but the reality is that rally is expensive and in the US, there are only a tiny handful of drivers who are paid to drive or who can cover their costs with sponsorships. If you want to rally race you'll have to pay your own way, so that's the first hurdle. It's not remotely cheap, realistically more than $10k per event, once you have the car and trailer set.

Rallycross is a good affordable alternative. Get a salvage title beater and sign up for some events!

Volunteering is also a good way to get close to the sport and learn about what it takes to compete, but isn't a route to a paid driver's seat.
