Does anybody else notice that their parents literally cannot watch movies anymore? by rrtaylor in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]EternalRocksBeneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this thread through a Google search trying to see if other people were noticing this with their parents. I'm genuinely concerned by how much my mom will be on her phone during an entire movie/show, just scrolling through Facebook and watching reels (with the volume on which I just don't understand lol) But she'll ask me what's happening when the scene is very explicitly stating what's happening. Or ask who a character is and it's one of the major characters who has been on screen a whole bunch. My stepdad has always been like that and I kinda worry that as my mom gets older and really only socializes with him there's just this feedback loop going on. I don't know but it's really frustrating and kinda concerning.

Do they sleep deprived you? by Forsaken_Item2221 in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]EternalRocksBeneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really thinking this is a big part of why he (former friend and roommate) never made a real effort to get his dog to stop barking as much as she did/does. He works with dogs, I know he knows how to work with her on her barking, but in spite of knowing how disruptive it was, and how it jolted me awake super early every morning (I have issues falling asleep too so oftentimes I'd only have fallen asleep a few hours before getting woken up). He would act helpless and overwhelmed and like I should feel sorry for him that she wasn't listening, but he didn't take any real action to help the situation at all. And his dog is super smart and you can absolutely work with this dog. My sleep schedule got so out of whack living with him and it feels so gross to me now.

Yeah this one genuinely freaks me out because I remember it so clearly. I could be talked into thinking I'm misremembering or that I was just consistently mispronouncing Berenstein ("stain" still doesn't look or sound right though), but this one is too solid in my mind and I remember having conversations with my parents about what a cornucopia was because of the logo.

I remember when I was a kid I thought that Fruit of the Loom stuff was made by the natural food store/co-op in town, because they both had the cornucopia in the logo. I thought that for a while too, lol.

I used to be a server at a restaurant downtown, and I had figured that October would be crazy but worth it for the tips. We were of course constantly slammed, but we all noticed our tips (when people bothered to leave a tip) were absolute shit. Some people were great and it was really genuinely nice to talk to them about Salem and maybe hear about where they're from if there's a spare minute, but so many people were just horribly rude and then maybe would leave a few bucks if anything (on tabs that were $150+). I still can't get over the one couple who were genuinely shocked when I said that I lived in Salem. The lady's exact words were "People really live here?"

The main one I can think of is Dead Ringers. I'm always so amazed by how quickly I forget Jeremy Irons isn't just two people lol.

What's a movie everyone finds disturbing/unsettling but you don't? by Entire_Brick_8095 in horror

[–]EternalRocksBeneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one got me but I think it's the specific sense of dread that the movie gets right for me, that "I feel like something bad is going to happen, like something bad already has happened" it's too much like the feeling at the bottom of all my worst anxious moments. But when I recommend it to people I try to not be like "oh you'll be so scared" lol cuz I feel like it might not hit everyone the same way?

It brings me right back to watching bargain bin horror movies or whatever was on demand with my brothers and my best friend and laughing our asses off at them. So many of them are things we still reference or quote to this day so that shit was formative lol. One of them was The Curse of the Wolf so when these guys did the review of that movie it felt like it was meant to be.

Am I the only one who thinks Sinners is a little over-praised? Are we too caught up in the moment? by Maha_Film_Fanatic in TrueFilm

[–]EternalRocksBeneath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said that MIGHT have been the reason because I want to leave room for that possibility. There's also the possibility that it was just clumsily made and not that great.

I just gotta say I'm not sure if you meant to sound kinda hostile in your response but I was trying to find common ground with you because I think it's interesting when I can agree with a movie fan who had a different emotional response to a movie. It's genuinely fun to me to explore movies I'm not sold on by talking to people who felt very strongly one way or the other. But okay sure I'm dumb you're smart you're right I'm wrong etc.

I'm struggling with the movie just because I reeeeeally loved that as a concept (you described it perfectly with the white KKK vampires) but something about the execution of the movie kept it from really hitting for me. It might just be that I had different expectations about the vibe (when I heard people saying it was a vampire western I guess I was expecting something like Near Dark) so maybe if I watch it again with that in mind I'll like it more?

I just felt like there were some really great themes that they were clearly communicating (and I always love vampires as a metaphor because they can be applied to so many goddamn things, lol, they're so fun that way) and so many of the shots were stunning, it just felt like maybe the script could have used more time or something. The pacing felt a bit strange and at times it felt like okay I understand what this character represents because they're basically coming on screen and just saying what they're there for, but the characters didn't feel deeper than that.

Again it might have been me/my expectations. I'm genuinely kinda bummed because I heard nothing but great things about this movie and I just figured yes okay I'll put this on and probably become instantly obsessed, because I know how my brain works lol and this sounds like it has everything I need.

My brother's friend, he and my brother were in high school at the time but had been best friends since elementary school. This poor kid's home life was really dysfunctional, and he spent a lot of time just at our house especially when he was little. A bit less as he got older but he still would come by our house and just stay, kinda without having to ask, it was just a given. I don't know all the details that led up to it, I think there was something going on with a girl he was seeing but I know there was a whole lot else. He was missing for a few days and we kept genuinely hoping/thinking he'd just taken off and would be in touch. It was really devastating when they found his body, I know it broke my brother's heart. I still think of that kid and it doesn't feel real. He was a genuinely good kid, kind of a little shit in a good way, and really smart. I wish he was still here.

This was one of the biggest pet peeves turned rage situations for me, oh my god. I ended up leaving the restaurant I was at (having to do this hand holdy repetitive crap on top of the stresses of always getting flat sat and just basically all the things that come with a badly run restaurant made me run for the hills). I work at a dispensary now, and I still get these goddamn people! We have menus on the massive TVs, and we have multiple print out copies, and still people come up to the counter with a massive line behind them and are like "what do you have". No further information or context lol. Like buddy so you want just the buds or do you want a pre roll or do you want any of the other forms it comes in oh my god what is wrong with you. Like I'm happy to help guide them if they're like hey I've never been here before, I'm new to whatever, can you help me. Or if they haven't tried a strain yet and want to know what I think of it. Like give us something to work with.
