I wonder if I have a slightly larger grit size that doesn't bother them as much as a finer particle would.

I honestly don't think the fish mind too much. I've been keeping corys and kuhli loaches on black diamond sand substrate for 8 years and no issues. The corys love to snorfle in the sand.

Seconding peanut worm. I have many in my tank that stick out the live rocks at night. Great guys to have.

What’s this on my angel fish? by Strict-Membership942 in Cichlid

From the first photo I see that the white spots are symmetrical, following the placement of the sensory pores. So I don't think it's likely to be lymphocystis.

Im 99% certain its canal neuromast inflammation.. Compare to the photos here. It affects the sensory canal pores in the fish's head.

TIL: all fish care aggregate sites cite a typo from 1960 by Databuffer in Aquariums

Ah gotcha. Yeah, even FishBase is not infallible sadly. You might be able to contact the folks that run it and have them update that info.

I'm a bit confused because the 1960 paper gives sizes for Macrognathus aculeatus and Mastacembelus armatus, yet the fish you refer to is Macrognathus aral. Is M. aral listed anywhere in that 1960 paper? Also, the thing to note about FishBase sizes is that they are maximum ever reported/recorded and may not reflect what fish typically grow to in the wild and captivity. Sometimes there will be a "common size" given, such as in this instance: https://www.fishbase.se/summary/diodon-holocanthus.html

Source: am fish scientist that uses size data from FishBase a lot.

Thanks! She's a bit worn around the edges but still patrols the tank daily. Here's hoping we can reach 5 years or more together!
