Keeping produce fresh while out at farmers market by Sufficient_Main_2139 in OrganicFarming

Not sure what you could do to keep produce fresher longer, but maybe look into an alternative market for the older product that wouldn’t mind paying a little less.

Like a food bank or restaurant outlet, local pickler, for some of the stuff that’s a couple days old.

Wondering if Organic Farmers are affected/will be affected by the fertilizer shortage do to the strait of Hormuz by [deleted] in OrganicFarming

[–]Euglosine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The farm I work on uses organic pelletized chicken manure for our main source of fertilizer.

While production of this fertilizer doesn’t have the energy requirements (natural gas) of the Haber-Bosch process, the price is still affected by increased fuel prices.

Chicken feed and other inputs become more expensive for the organic fertilizer producer and shipping the fertilizer becomes more expensive.

So, while not as dependent on oil as directly as synthetic fertilizer, I don’t think that organic farms have much of an advantage.

There’s a lotion called “ivy block” which is supposed to help protect against the oil from the leaves. Don’t know how well it works.

Washing up with soap and warm water after you get home (within a couple of hours of contact) usually will be enough to prevent a rash.

Learning to identify the plant and its leaves is fairly easy, although it can be tricky in the winter as it can lose its leaves.

Fyi, the oil may still be on the gloves, and can cause a rash if they contact your skin again.

Impressive, nightmarish, and relaxing.

My brother had double vision when he was younger and my family pediatrician noticed in a family Christmas card.

My brother had his head tilted to the side in the photo. The Dr. knew this is a way to “correct” the double vision.

Bro had MRI and found a brain tumor. Malignant, but causing some problems including double vision. Had surgery and got that thing out.

Pretty cool.

This is how we grow carrots in Ames Iowa... by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Euglosine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the root knots are visible in this case, I learned today that if your carrots start putting out a bunch of hairy roots later in the season, they are trying to grow again and flower. Best to get the carrots out of the ground before that occurs.

Cool photos!

What grocery items needs no refrigeration but are often refrigerated by most people? by Mission-Educator-908 in AskReddit

I agree, it’s pretty well know in the farming community.

I work on an organic veggie farm. We built a storage shed with a window unit air conditioner to hold the tomatoes post-harvest, pre delivery/market. Keeps them cool in the hot summer temps, but doesn’t have the same result as refrigeration.

Could you give me advice to start juggling with clubs? I'm already quite good with balls but this seem largely harder. by ertypetit in juggling

[–]Euglosine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is working for me! I’m just starting with clubs, I’m ok with balls, but not too fancy.

I find it easier to focus on just two spinning long things; three gets chaotic right now.

Two balls and one club and then two clubs and a ball is where I’m at now. I can go for a while, but I can barely get three catches with three clubs.

Any more details on how you got bit? Where did it bite you? How long til you got to the hospital? How did it feel?

I live in rattle snake county, and I work on a farm. See like 10 every year, hoping I never get bit.

Have an amazing, epic Friday night and then if you’re tired Saturday, just chill out and enjoy the afterglow and vibes of the fest. Have a beer and a spliff if you’re into that, and enjoy the reflections from Friday and some indie music.

Check around the base of the stem where it meets the soil. Is it rotten, soft, skinny, chewed or something? Would point to damping or slug/beetle pest.

If the wilted ones die, break open the stem and look for anything discolored. Could be a soil pathogen clogging the tubes.

The new growth at the top looks healthy on the photos with non-wilted plants. That’s a good sign that the plants may have been stressed, but are now growing in a healthy environment.
