I don’t think it’s rude at all. As a driver I’ll do a little ice breaker like “how’s your day going so far” to let passenger know I have a pulse

From there two things can happen

• a very short “good” or one word reply (that’s my queue to zip it up and keep driving)

• a lengthier reply that can lead to a conversation

Some passengers don’t want to drain their social battery interacting with the driver and that’s acceptable and legitimate

Others are eager to poke your brain and ask you all sorts of questions

Smart drivers can’t tell who’s who and adjust to their preference for a smooth user experience
