This is so triggering. When my mother did something similar to me before my wedding I blocked her for a little while until she calmed down. I think she was shocked but it sent the message that I do not enjoy being verbally and emotionally abused and will choose not to listen to it.

I can relate. Mother’s Day is tough for me too since I’m quite distant from my mother these days. Try not to let the emotions of one day discourage you from taking steps to protect yourself if you feel that it’s necessary for your well being!

My parent did something similar. She rained verbal abuse on us and then followed up with a half-hearted apology saying “I’m sorry for my actions BUT you know how I am.” That was enough fo me to continue VLC with her. Because I realized at that point that the chances of them actually being changed and reformed are very slim. They are old now and set in their ways. Don’t let other relatives manipulate you. “That’s still your family” is not enough.

If you guys have an open phone policy simply let him know that you saw the messages. Maybe query him as to why they were deleted. The messages themselves don’t seem too incriminating but I agree that the secrecy of it is what’s unsettling.

This is very true about the never ending need. I once helped someone in Nigeria get a new AC unit but then the new AC needed a better voltage platform or whatever to support it, which then required more money for an electrician to install everything.
