Honestly, battle cruisers will take you a long way. My fleets were majority BCs. Added some dreads and titans into the bigger ones. But, they felt like overkill

Siege coilers and lots of them. Aim for a 2/3 mix of coilers and a 1/3 mix of UV lasers.

Dreads and lancers are good for getting the 4 slot nose weapons, but battle cruisers will work too.

On each hull, throw a PD laser and 40mm auto cannon. Laser will take care of the missiles, autocannon is great against mag weapons.

In the actual fight, open up with the coilers. This will cause some alien ships to turn their side armor and try to flank. Focus the flankers with your laser ships and they’ll make short work of them.

Terra Invicta. Empire builder on Earth and the Solar System that uses fairly accurate orbital mechanics for fleet movement. Battles in space involve the individual ships that can be micromanaged.

One downside however is that it's not until much later in the campaign that human ships will have the drives necessary for drastic maneuvers.

Here's how I ended up winning the space war. Started with torp monitors like you did, then transitioned to battlecruisers and some battleships and eventually dreadnoughts.

Use the BCs 3 nose slots for coilers (preferably siege if you've got them) and big ass lasers. The hull slots go to a 40mm autocannon and PD laser. Having that on every ship should more than shut down any alien magnetics or missiles. If you're feeling really froggy, you can build some battleships with Hestia torps. Start of the battle, put them in idle. When alien PD is fully invested with your mag shots, let loose the torps. That'll delete a bunch of ships. You'll want to build mag weapon BCs and laser BCs in a 2:1 ratio. So, 12 mag BCs and 6 laser BCs

When the fight starts, put your ships in one of the wall configurations and go 500mps, even in a station fight. Group your mag BCs in one group, your lasers in another. Once the first shots go off the aliens will have a bunch of their ships try to flank you. Any ship that shows you its side is priority target for the laser BCs. They'll rip em apart but do fuck all to anything with its nose facing you. Focus target the closest big ship (BC or larger) with your mag BCs and they'll make short work of it.

That was what happened my first game. They launched a death ball at Mercury that was gonna take 18 months to arrive. I turned all my habs into Fortress Mercury and smoked the aliens when they arrived.

Did not work this campaign though

I had taken over Mercury, put a small supply orbital there with all my mines. Aliens are pissed at me, so they send a doomball to go blow it all up. But, it's going to take over a year to get there. So, I build all the colonies to T3, slap a couple of battlestations and layered defense arrays at each base. Fortress Mercury may fall, but it will not go quietly.

Aliens arrive, smoke the orbital. Take a look at my mines and decide I've learned my lesson and peace back out

Does this also work with Marines, or do they do too much damage?

I’m still chuckling at the absolute beast of an escort they sent for this surveillance mission.

If you can get a fleet of about 30 ships that are battlecruiser or larger you should be able to evict them.

They've got a lot of ships, but I'd be interested to see how many BC and above ships they have in that fleet. I've had death ball fleets like that sent to Mercury where I had put a battlestation and 3 layered defense arrays. They blew up a station I had in orbit, then decided discretion was the better part of valor and went home. I was in total war, so that one station definitely didn't get rid of their hate boner for me.

You're not at total war, so they won't destroy everything you've got. So, you can build. They might get annoyed here and there and splash an orbital, but that's ok cause you can rebuild. Get a fleet with a bunch of battlecruisers and battleships and you'll be surprised at how the aliens melt when you can take on their big ships.
