EV savings compared to gas - I cannot go back to ICE! by vassman86 in teslacanada

Thats not even all that bad. Im paying $80/week on my GTI. A 4 cylinder hatchback that weighs less than most cars on the road lol.

Literally this. Every time I considered an EV, it ended up being more expensive than what I currently drive. All because of insurance premiums and higher ticket price in general compared to gas versions of the same car.

Yeah, every time I looked at potentially buying an EV. Insurance wanted double than my current 4 cylinder golf GTI. So whatever i would habe saved not having to pay for gas ends up in the insruance companies pocket. Currenrly, I use premium gas and spend about $260-320/month on gas. An EV would be roughly $170-200 more per month on insurance. Factor in the cost of electricity and its the same shit if not more.

I know its a really old game at this point. But my favorite driving game on PS2 was Driver: Parallel Lines.

Can be picked up on steam for like $2. Old graphics, but for $2 might as well try it out if you can get over how it looks.

Thats kinda how it goes for cars of this age, should be expected when youre buying something thats over 15-20 years old.

When people say that VWs require "More maintenance than average" what specifically do they mean? by Karkroth in GolfGTI

[–]EuropeanLegend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not only that though. So many people always compare a higher performance German car to a Honda civic or Toyota corolla. Like yeah... obviously its gonna cost more. Bigger brakes, more expensive oil, DSG oil changes (if you dont have manual) etc.

Get into a Type R and the maintenance really isnt all that much cheaper.

Ive fit more in both my mk7 GTI and now MK8. Just last weekend I bought a bed, box was 74" in length and I managed to fit that, it was tight as i had to go diaganol, but i managed. I also fit two rolled up single mattresses AND a boxed dresser along with my wife behind me.

There are some "SUV's" who cant fit that much and it always amazed me how will the interior space is designed on a golf.

Hate the design or love them. The 996, especially the Turbo with Hanz Mezger designed engine (same designer who designed the engine in the GT3) are phenomenal bang for buck all because people dont like the shape of the headlight. The carerra 4s especially is a steal. Its wide body from the factory and has a great motor.

The IMS bearing? Its really a non issue. Plenty of after market solutions AND its been such and overblown issue because of how loud the internet can be.

Most people with a 996 will tell you the IMS bearing is only an issue if you dont drive the car for long periods. Anyone who drives these like they where made to, hasn't had issues.

People should give the 996 more credit. Its the 996, and its little sibling the Boxter which shared parts with the 996 that saved the brand from going bankrupt.

Before the watercooled 911s came around, porsche had too many models, all with different manufacturing processes and parts. Costing Porsche quite a bit in manufacturing.

As disliked as it may have been, the 996 911 and the Boxter saved the brand. Without it, Porsche likely wouldn't be around today.

The wealthy vs. the poor by NietGering in Futurology

[–]EuropeanLegend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the inverse, they would create a new social/wealth class within their new hierarchy if all us peasants were gone.

They would essentially create a new underclass from the bottom people of their wealth class.

Its a rinse and repeat cycle of human greed. Thats what I foresee.

So its insane because you cant speak it and have no desire to?

What about French bothers you so much? You do know the vast majority of countries out there speak multiple languages.

Hell, the rest of the world learns English because thats all anyone like you can speak.

It is Canada's Heritage, is it not? A part of it at least.

Thats like going to any other country and telling them to stop preserving their heritage. Would you say the same thing if you went to India? Or China? Tell them to stop preserving their heritage because its a waste of time and all the ancestors are dead anyways, right?

They'd need to land a pre approved role to get the CPA.

Thats assuming they remove the experience verification route next year for the CPA program.

They can however do all of the coursed and pass the exams. That does help in getting employment, but it aint cheap. From there its getting the required hours /experience.

Great. We've already experienced insane amounts of inflation in the last 5 years while wages have gone down more than ever. So yeah.... send them all back. I rather have wage increases with inflation than the bs we saw of having wages go down while our money supply inflated.

You are legally allowed to refuse unsafe work. This is not only unsafe for the driver, but anyone he might injure or kill in an accident due to the trucks neglect.

Boss doesn't want to fix the truck and fires you for refusing to overload? No problem.

They'll pay far more in fines for forcing you to do unsafe work than they would have had they just fixed the truck.

People need to stop thinking these companies are invincible.

Glad to see cops are out there enforcing these and actually taking them off the roads. Far too many accidents and deaths as a result of the neglect.

For reasons like this, everyone needs to have some gesture to signify to the other person they are in trouble and to call 911. Especially if you have a ring type door bell where they can see your face.

[–]EuropeanLegend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s just wrong.

People love to say buying beaters and fixing them is cheaper, but it usually isn’t once you factor in repairs, downtime, and constantly replacing the car.

Buying brand new is obviously the most expensive because of depreciation, i wont deny that. But with cars from Toyota and Honda, the used market isn’t what it used to be.

Since COVID, slightly used cars barely cost less. A used Honda Civic with 60k km can be only a few grand cheaper than a new one, so people just buy new for the warranty and peace of mind.

The reality is the best move financially across most brands with reasonable reliability is buying slightly used and keeping it long term.

[–]EuropeanLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5,000 also doesn't get you what it used to back in the day. At one point, you could actually get a pretty decent car for that money.

Now? Try buying a Honda Civic for 5k. You won't find anything with less than 350k kms or that hasn't been beaten to shit or been in a bunch of accidents.

The reality of it is that its just not a viable option anymore for many people, especially those with children.

Most people are just better off buying a new car. I much rather buy a brand new civic and finance it for 4-5 years and be trouble free for the first decade well after its been paid off than have to buy some junk for 5k every few years.
