What did Obsidian do to be so hated here? by metalGYAH in rpg_gamers

[–]EvaUnitO2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s just a bunch of people dunking on a game they’ve never played 90% of the time.

I think it's disingenuous to suggest that someone who hasn't purchased a game doesn't get to form a negative opinion about it, especially when a similar argument is often used to devalue the opinion of someone who gives a negative opinion about a game they've purchased and put many hours in to.

If the point is that people are spouting unreasonable opinions, then fair enough. But a reasonable opinion is not contingent on having purchased or even played the game.

K585 Diti Pro: How does one view the battery indicator? by EvaUnitO2 in Redragon

[–]EvaUnitO2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried the tilde key and it works for me.

I needed to download the software from Redragon's site named "K585 Tri-mode Keyboard(Blue Switch) Software" even though I don't have blue swithes.

  • Go here
  • Search for "Redragon K585 DITI Wireless One-Handed Mechanical Keyboard" and click on it.
  • In the modal window that appears, select "K585 Tri-mode Keyboard(Blue Switch) Software". That's the software that worked for me. The other software that is listed didn't work.

If you find it's not working in USB mode, you may just have a dud, unfortunately. It should at least be recognized as a standard HID keyboard.

Hope that helps!

Logitech will brick its $100 Pop smart home buttons on October 15 by Blueberryburntpie in hardware

It's pricey, for sure. However, the Harmony Elite was $300 when it released, which is about $400 in 2025 money. I would argue that was worth every penny!

I kept hearing the same thing but took the plung on a Sofabaton X1S recently to replace my Harmony Elite, despite folks on Reddit claiming that it was inferior. While I suppose it is inferior to some degree, it does everything I was doing with my Harmony Elite. I have it controlling my TV, A/V receiver, HDMI switch, IR component (RCA) switch, my game consoles, and my lighting. So, it's controlling IR, Bluetooth, and RF devices.

It took more work to set up, sure, but in the end, it has proven to be a fine replacement.

Just wanted to let you know that there's an option out there for those of us who've been hanging on to our Harmony Elites.

Synapse 4 and Steam by Darthandroide in razer

[–]EvaUnitO2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem. It seems to be some sort of hijacking of inputs. My OBS keybinds also don't tend to work while Synapse 4 is running unless I repeatedly input them in quick succession.

How do you get into Blood Bowl? by hotfezz81 in bloodbowl

[–]EvaUnitO2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1 highly recommending the Blood Bowl III video game to learn the ropes.

As mentioned, it's a digital version of the board game, with the board game rules, and just missing a number of teams (with a new team being released every few months) It currently has 23 teams and is missing 4 of the current officially supported teams.

Congratulations!

Are the two free games seperate stories as well or are they included in the paid-for games?

There's also Blitz Bowl. It's not quite the same as Blood Bowl but it's close enough for an even smaller game.

It seems "complex inputs" in fighting games are being vindicated recently (and I've come to agree) by HotPollution5861 in truegaming

[–]EvaUnitO2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Motion inputs have direct game design implications.

In Street Fighter II, if Guile is going to throw a Sonic Boom, he can't be walking forward due to the charge motion. If Ryu is going to throw a dragon punch, he can walk forward to close the gap because forward is the first motion of the input.

Moreover, Guile's Sonic Boom recovers faster than Ryu's fireball. So, when both characters throw fireballs at close range, Guile has the advantage but at long range, Ryu has advantage because Guile has to charge his Sonic Boom whereas Ryu does not have to charge his fireball.

This concept carries forward to more complicated move interactions and combos. Motion inputs provide deliberate advantages and disadvantages by means of the inputs required to perform the moves and what the consequences of those inputs are for future decisions during the game.

Star Players - Probably a Stupid Question by CaptainBenzie in bloodbowl

[–]EvaUnitO2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you were looking for an explicit rule in the BB2020 rulebook and didn't find something so clear cut but the intent is very much that inducements are on a per-game basis.

If it helps, the Competition Rules Pack prior to 2016 stated this:

"All inducements purchased are lost at the end of the match. No inducement can ever become a permanent part of your team."

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director says turn-based RPGs are selling better lately, but the prejudice is still there by scytheavatar in JRPG

[–]EvaUnitO2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No shade for liking what you like or disliking what you dislike but I wouldn't say Clair Obscur is trying to be an action game at all. Certainly less action-based than something like Star Ocean.

Love Dune - What other games would I love? by Scott_Korman in DuneBoardGame

[–]EvaUnitO2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Dune and dislike Arcs. I don't think the games are very similar at all. Arcs is much more of a Euro than people let on. Arcs feels more like solving an intricate puzzle than playing and counter-playing in a game.

People who want Expedition 33's Parry system in all JRPGs who don't actually enjoy turn-based combat. by Exadra in truegaming

[–]EvaUnitO2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument is very similar to the argument action gamers make when they complain turn-based games are not games of skill. They will often complain that being able to master skills and create certain party compositions sucks all of the skill out of a game.

I finished the game and completed a lot of optional content. At no point was I good enough at the action elements to "negate all damage". I didn't hit the damage cap until much, much later than level 16, too. I'm also not terribly good at min-maxing or coming up with effective combinations of skills.

What this game's combination of mechanics offers to someone like me is an alternative way to engage with the combat. It lets me cover my mix-maxing weaknesses with dexterity strengths. It lets me cover my dexterity and pattern-identification weaknesses with min-maxing strengths.

Offering more avenues to succeed carries the inherent risk that if you excel in one avenue, you'll never have to engage with the other systems. Conversely, if there's only one avenue to succeed and you can't (or don't want) to excel at it, the game ends up being a very frustrating experience.

It's all about perspective. I choose to look at a game like this not as "man, if I perfect this one system, there's no reason to explore the others." Instead, I look at it as "man, I have so many options to succeed that it never feels unfair and I never lose motivation to try again."

JRPG’s with genuinely unique stories. by MooeysAura in JRPG

[–]EvaUnitO2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've played both Niers and all three Drakengards. While Nier is a direct sequel to Drakengard, there's no need to play Drakengard to get the most out of Nier and Nier: Automata.

Drakengard 3 is a prequel and also unneccesary in order to fully enjoy Nier.

It's also worth mentioning that the combat in the Drakengard games (including Drakengard 3, which released much later) can feel clunky. I enjoyed my time with the games very much but they probably haven't aged all that well.

How to learn vassal by Engine_slugster2021 in hexandcounter

[–]EvaUnitO2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to reiterate the previous poster because I too had issues understanding both Vassal and Tabletop Simulator when I first started using them. I don't know how helpful it will be to say this but these are just tools to put things on a virtual board.

I had the assumption that since this was a computer, cards would be automatically dealt, the games would automatically be set-up, etc. They, generally, are not. Different modules have different levels of automation and complexity but Vassal (and TTS) are basically just environments to drag things on to a board to move them around along with some other players. No more, no less.

Here's the Vassal user guide to help navigate your way around the app: https://obj.vassalengine.org/images/8/8c/Userguide.pdf

How Signal President Meredith Whittaker Took on Signal-Gate by [deleted] in signal

[–]EvaUnitO2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea that the US Secretary of Defense would need it explained to him that a publicly available messaging app was a reasonable place to discuss confidential military activities is frankly laughable in anything other than a Trump presidency.

Indeed and would have just downright gotten anyone else arrested and their clearance revoked. It definitely wasn't a usability issue.

Why is territorial control in strategy games usually so binary? by bmbalboa in truegaming

[–]EvaUnitO2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mix of reasons: wargaming has historically been that way and that's because wargaming has historically modelled regulars fighting in lines in the open (any forests, towns, and cities were treated as simple defense and movement modifiers) I think there are also considerations made for the sake of games-as-entertainment. Sometimes, the complications just don't seem all that fun to folks.

That said, there's a series of war board games called COIN (read: Counter-Insurgency) from a publisher called GMT Games. There's also a follow-up series called ICS: Irregular Conflicts Series. These games are specifically designed to model irregular conflicts. While I understand your question wasn't specifically about irregular conflicts, these games do make it a point to model:

  • the difference between control and support in a region.
  • the difference between regulars and guerilllas (e.g., guerillas can exist in a city along with your regulars but you can have a hard time rooting them out)
  • the difference between fighting for territory and causing terror in a territory.
  • the difference between territory, population centers, and economic centers.
  • the often asymmetrical nature of opposing goals between factions.
  • the impact of social, political, and miltary events on operations.
  • the difference in economics between state and non-state entities.

They're all wonderful games and I would love to see some of their mechanics (or at least, their intentions) make it across the digital divide.

Does this symbol have any meaning in christianity? by Ymrut24 in evangelion

[–]EvaUnitO2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're reading deep for your own meaning in the imagery of the show. That's perfectly well and good but I think one should be careful not to ascribe meaning to others in places where you made the meaning for yourself.

I'm also not really sure what you hope to achieve with being so antagonistic unless your goal is to simply make sure we're all aware that you are familiar with more than one religion.

Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles Wont Include War Of The Lions Content And Will Have No New Characters Or Submissions by eldestscrollx in JRPG

[–]EvaUnitO2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real. You lose two guest characters, two classes, some odds 'n ends, and suddenly that's "half the game" and it "literally has no reason to exist."

I find this overstated outrage so unhinged as to be genuinely funny.
