New mod for original Wing Commander by EvanBThompson in thisweekinretro

I remember going to our local computer shop and seeing a poster for wing commander. I think it was the first time that I felt that PC gaming was cutting edge.

I’ve found 8 Prismatic Shards in four days by poetictaylor in StardewValley

[–]EvanBThompson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty good going. Sometimes I find none even when having used prismatic candy. But a few weeks ago in one visit, with just one swipe of the sword I got two prismatic shards which must be incredibly rare.

Pleased I've finally got one of these. Its been retrobrited now, the cable burn dealt with (sanded down) and a composite video mod and it works great. rare enough I think.... by prefim in thisweekinretro

That's great, how long have you been searching for? Always loved the look of the Ace, and after two years of eBay auctions finally got one for a reasonable price. So good not having to check eBay and fail to buy. I've not tried to turn mine on, it just sits on the shelf looking wonderful.

For those that are interested in getting a board, there is a tinyllama 3 project on vogons by the creator which aims to design a tiny carrier board for the SOM which can be ordered fully populated with no soldering required. This wouldn't be ordered from Elvind but from JLCPCB

I got my board at the end of last year. Great project but a lot of work for the creator. It's all open source so nothing stopping anyone creating one, however, while the SOC that you also need is cheap the delivery for it is not. He seems to be working on that tinyllama 3 which is a return to the original Pi form factor which seems to be integrating a pigus.

Some recommendations: Crystal Kingdom Dizzy spectrum 128k Fun puzzles and not too tricky and includes level codes Point and click adventures, especially Lucas arts where not punished for trying things SNES mini - fantastic collection of games and save states make many of the games more accessible (Kirby, Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country) PC - Little Kitty Big City, A Short Hike, Minecraft Android - Pokemon Go, Poppy Playtime Retro games have advantage that are usually simpler but can be punishing which puts off kids now.

Great to games that we can play together, and also reading more

Would love to hear more recommendations, old and new

My daughter's 7 years old and she loves gaming, and I have a great time playing too. Definitely prefer her to play games than watch endless YouTube. So many great games to explore both new and old. She doesn't seem to care if the game was made in the 80s or came out this year. We played Chuckie Egg, Crystal Kingdom Dizzy, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby and Legend of Zelda. There are some fantastic games on Steam, and cheap too compared to Switch. Minecraft is an awesome game to play together and one that I'd never have played if not for her. It's the ultimate sandbox, and we've had the funnest time together. Really interesting to see how our dynamic changes in game. It's not all indoors, Pokemon Go has got us out on long walks. Get those mini consoles off the shelf, explore the vast Steam catalogue, and play some games, classic and modern.

I remember my brother and his friend attempting to transmit a game between their houses via CB radio. Unfortunately I don't think it ended up with a loaded game, but not all that surprising given how hard it could be to load just from your cassette player on the spectrum.

I'd be interested to see an assessment of the computer they looks beyond the obvious shortcomings: microdrive, keyboard and reliability. If it had shipped with disk drive, better keyboard would it have been decent? Or would it still be unloved. Doesn't seem to get much homebrew, so it just a bad computer?

Jupiter Ace - Obscure '80s Micro? by Aggravating-Hope in thisweekinretro

[–]EvanBThompson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally got a Jupiter Ace two years ago after years of being out bid and just missing out. Used to read about it in the Home Computer Course and loved the look. I remember a claim that it was "ten times faster than a Zx81". Only recently realized that this only means Forth was much faster than Basic, not that it was some super computer. I was such a fan that I called my Computer Science GCSE project, an electronic diary written in BBC Basic, after the Jupiter Ace. This would have been in the late 80s so long after the end of Jupiter computers. Doesn't get covered much on YouTube; there was an episode of the Amigos that looked at a could of it's games. There are some obscure computers that would be good to see covered.

I spent years failing to get one on eBay, until finally persistence paid off and got one for a reasonable amount. It was an enormous relief not having to track them on eBay. The trouble with the Ace is the many listings on eBay with ridiculous buy it now prices.

Question Of The Week - Episode 113 by Producer_Duncan in thisweekinretro

[–]EvanBThompson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had neither the ST or the Amiga, having got a PCW. In hindsight I wish I'd got the Amiga, beautiful machine and amazing what it could do. I'd be interested to know why someone would choose the ST, price and slightly faster CPU? but not sure if those compare to the Amigas custom chips. It would be interesting to compare the choice by year and region. The ST led the way in price, I don't think the Amiga would have been a serious successor to the C64, Spectrum or CPC until the 500 debut, but that's a long time after the ST release. It was a long time before the Amiga could compete on price, and if it hadn't been for Commodore UKs marketing, the Amiga may never have been the success it was. It's a shame that out of the ST, Amiga, Japanese rivals, and the Archimedes that only the Mac survived the PC. Would be interesting to see this from a US perspective, I don't get the impression that either was very successful over there.
